Batwoman #5 - Hydrology, Part 5: Evapotranspiration Review

5

Kate's identity becomes compromised and a proposition from an adversary rests before her. Will she accept an offer that could pit her against Batman, himself?

The Good

Blackman and Williams III deliver another outstanding issue that will have readers on the edge of their seats. The plot thickens and the story becomes more dense in the series' fifth issue. Kate continues to be an incredibly provocative character in a book that is both visually breathtaking as well as thought provoking.

The fifth issue of her series presents Kate with a series of challenges including a proposal from an enemy. What do you do when your greatest adversary gives you an offer you can't refuse? The offer is a double edged sword and Kate will be jeopardizing both herself and those she holds near and dear to her regardless of her final decision. The reader will be left wondering whether she will accept the offer and ultimately betray her own convictions? The creative team has, so far, been very consistent in depicting Kate as this very level-headed character who strives to do the right thing, so it will be very interesting to see the outcome of this story.

Readers get a glimpse at Kate's work ethic and the way her mind works. How does she defeat the Weeping Woman? While Batman wracks his brain until he comes to a solution, Kate takes a far different approach which we see exemplified here.

The Bad

Nothing bad here. Perfect issue.

The Verdict

If you are looking to be completely blown away by a comic book this week then be sure to put BATWOMAN on your pull list as it is sure to do the trick. If you thought things were heating up before, then you haven't seen anything yet. Definitely not where new readers want to start reading. Gorgeously illustrated, incredible story. I can't wait for issue #6.

The only thing about this issue that bothered me was how she never once found it odd to have a talking ******** smoking in her kitchen, but then again this is pretty much the only DCU book to survive Flashpoint untouched.

Brilliant Issue, great art. Batwoman and its brother title Batman have been the best books to come out of new 52 for me.

So glad I took a risk on this series, it's been nothing but rewarding thus far. I love the boundaries that William's pushes with his layouts and Stewarts coloring, this book seriously is a master piece. I'm going to be reading this issue until the next one drops just to absorb, analyze, and appreciate the art. Reeder's great and I can't wait to see what she does, because she's got a hell of an act to follow! The growth in Williams/Blackman's writing from issue 0 to now has been astounding. It's still not touching Rucka's, but hey, you know...he's Greg frakin' Rucka!!! I love the new status quo they've set up for Kate and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out. And I'm happy to say that Williams/Blackman have finally gotten Bruce's voice down proper.

My pick of the week. Loved the ending to the arc and cant wait to see where Kate's decision concerning the D.E.O. takes her. Also dig the supernatural element this book brings. Really sets it apart from the other Bat titles.

I don't want to be another "this book is amazing," poster, but this book is amazing!

read it last night, and while I don't think it is as good as the previous issue, it's still a pretty exciting end to the first story arc. I love how heavy and consequence-laden the story line has been in this series so far. We haven't had a single issue of filler or nonsense. Amazing book, but I think The Shade was still my favorite this week.

Seriously , is there any better DC book than Batwoman ???? In my opinion definetly not !

@KainScion: I wouldn't say I hate it, but I certainly don't like it despite the good art. So you aren't the only one! :P

@lemontron: I kind of agree. The art's gorgeous, but honestly at times I feel that it distracts from the story and creates confusion. I'm still not sure how Batwoman defeated the Weeping Woman, with fire? How did that do anything? To me, this was a four-star issue, and Batman is definitely better than this.

I dont understand this "Batwoman" Hype. I read all issues because I really wanted to like it but at the end I have to be honest: I think it is boring. The Weeping Woman is a nice idea but the story did not catch me nor any of the story´s characters did. So far for me Batwoman is a boring character in a boring story. I will pass this one from here.
