The Good
I've been enjoying Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's take on BATWING. Luke Fox almost feels like he came out of nowhere and this is a great opportunity to journey back to get a little more insight into who exactly Luke was before joining the Bat Family.
By going back six years, clearly we will not be seeing any superhero antics involving Luke. But seeing his early training as an MMA fighter and just his experience in school is an interesting look. It may be under the Zero Year banner but that merely focuses on the time period. This is a key moment in Gotham's history in the main story and we get a glimpse of what's to come in BATMAN.
Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira have a really nice and clean art style. This is a great example when pairing artists with similar styles works instead of causing a distraction. Paul Mounts colors also make the panels pop with their vibrant colors, even when the scene is more on the darker side.
The story also plants the seeds for what's to come in upcoming issues. We are introduced to an individual that is clearly going to be returning to cause Batwing some serious problems.
And how about that Amanda Conner cover?
The Bad
There is one aspect to the story that you can sort of see coming. It's not a bad thing and the story was enjoyable but parts felt a little predictable.
There is an appearance by Batman that doesn't feel fully necessary but it does perhaps put Luke on his radar.
The Verdict
If you've been enjoying Luke Fox's tenure as Batwing, this is the perfect opportunity to find out a little more about who he was long before he stepped into the Bat-armor. Gray and Palmiotti bring us back six years to Gotham City's Zero Year and we get to see the early beginnings of what makes Luke the hero he is today. Some parts of the story felt a little predictable but with the great art and colors, it's a great trip into the past. Gray and Palmiotti also set the stage for what's likely to be a big problem for Luke. Join the fun and witness the birth of Gotham City's newest hero.
