Batman/Superman #2 - Doubletime

5

They're not in Kansas anymore. Or Gotham. Somehow the young versions of the New 52 Batman and Superman have ended up on Earth-2. Of course there'll be some fighting.

The Good

There's a new player in the picture. In the last issue we saw the 'first' meeting between Batman and Superman. It didn't go too well. As the two fought, they suddenly found themselves in familiar, yet completely different, settings. Batman and Superman have been transported to Earth-2 by a new threat.

This series is bringing a new twist to the concept of a first encounter in comics. We've seen many times when the heroes meet, they end up fighting until they realize they're both heroes. Throw in the alternate versions from Earth-2 and our two heroes have their hands full. Instead of just dealing with a new threat, now they are in a strange world where everything they know is somehow different. Seeing Batman and Superman discover the changes from EARTH 2 is pretty cool. It's also fascinating and eerie seeing Batman, Superman, Catwoman and Lois Lane before they meet their fate which was revealed in EARTH 2 #1. Seeing this Catwoman and Lois makes you wish to see more of these versions in EARTH 2 but unfortunately...

Jae Lee's art is extraordinary. He creates such a surreal vibe through his art along with the colors by June Chung. Some of the backgrounds may be a little sparse but the art is so nice to look at. The characters (especially the one standing on the last page) look so incredibly epic.

The Bad

If anything, the lack of backgrounds is a minor complaint. But being familiar with Lee's style, it shouldn't be something to really complain about.

The inclusion of the EARTH 2 characters is a little odd but it does make an intriguing story.

The Verdict

Greg Pak continues his ambitious beginning on this new series. For a series meant to spotlight DC's two biggest characters, you would expect nothing less. Pak is crafting a grand tale and despite being set in the past, there's absolutely no telling how this is going to end. Jae Lee's art and June Chung's colors are a thing of beauty. You can't help but be mesmerized by the character designs, especially with how majestic some appear. The story and art has such a surreal feel, you won't be able to resist getting sucked into this comic. Hopefully you won't need a passport for the journey.

Incredible issue. Pak is such a great writer. I patiently await for the end of DOOMED so he can get back to more of what he did in THIS issue. Excellent characterization across the board. He's the only writer to make Supes/Wondy interesting. I must also make mention of Jae Lee's incredible work. He's doing as much fantastic story telling here as Pak. This is how you write Batman and Superman. I wouldn't be opposed to Pak writing Batman one day.

What bugs me is why is DC using Earth 2 Superman/Batman instead of Earth 1 Superman/Batman?

I feel like the story was all over the place and the art just isn't right for this comic.

I still don't understand how this is their first meeting when they first met in Justice League issue 1

They're going to explain that on issue 4.

The beginning of this issue was a bit hard to follow, especially where Batman was concerned. Often I thought, Which Batman, Which Batcave?!

Overall though, this issue was great. I laughed out loud during the Batmen fight!

I'm really enjoying Batman/Superman. The art is outstanding and the meeting of the supermen/batmen this week adds a new twist. What with the new Batman and Superman movie being announced I think I will stick with this one for now.

Actually this issue reminds me how much I love jeans and tee Superman. These younger versions are way more interesting. I really have no desire to read over the old universe, because that's kind of pointless as far as I see it. You had that before. New and fresh needs to be new and fresh. The older Superman might be calmer but kinda uptight and henpecked.

What I think is interesting is how much Jae Lee's art has come to look like Charles Vess--which is very cool.

OMG. This is such a fantastic new series. I know its a lil early to judge, but this has to be one of the top 5 best series out of DC since the 2011 reboot. I swear, I almost teared up when Ma walked out to Clark and he hugged her. The Batman vs Batman fight was epic and Catwoman was perfect too. I want this to be a weekly (a guy can dream).

This book has crazy awesome panel layouts and the art...perfection.

On my pull list but I haven't read it yet.

To tell you the truth, reading this review has really let the wind out of my sails about this series. I really don't enjoy the different time settings and earths. Its too confusing and I just lose interest. I haven't even read earth 2.

Maybe I'll get lucky and Pak will keep it new reader friendly. There's nothing I hate more than having to research a book before I read it to know whats going on or to follow the story.

I haven't been reading any Superman or Batman books up to date and this book is an easy and enjoyable read for me.

I lol'd the part where the older batman thinks he has the advantage cause the younger one is inexperienced and angry while the younger one believed he had the advantage due to the older one being old, and injured.

What an amazing issue! The art was just mindblowing especially the final page which was just beautiful! I loved the Earth 2 versions of the characters we all know and love. The fight between the Batmen was also great and actually made me laugh out loud when they first exchange blows. I cant wait for the next issue!

I really liked the scene between Earth 2 Martha and Earth Prime Clark. The fight in the cave with the two Batmen was pretty well done too.

My only complain is that sometimes we get black sillouetes even in heavy lighted enviroments.

It works in some cases but they were full pages with only black sillouetes.
