Batman, Incorporated #8 - The Boy Wonder Returns

4

There will be a lot of talk and attention given to this issue but it turns out the story is well executed.

Let's be realistic, there will be some spoilers here. The spoilers are already out. We can't avoid them but we won't spoil everything. You know what happens. We won't reveal how it all happens.

The Good

In case you haven't heard, this issue is a little grim. Even though the Leviathan story may not be completely over, it's reached its climax here. This is an intense issue where something does happen. There's no dancing around or stalling.

There is a lot of Damian Wayne action here. Having been recently grounded by Batman, we saw last issue his patience reached its limit. Damian was prepared to join the battle. He does and it's glorious. Like him or hate him, seeing little Damian swoop in using Wayne Tech is something worth seeing. He's not the only Robin here as there's also plenty of Red Robin and Nightwing action as well. The best part of this issue is seeing Damian and Dick fighting side by side.

So far, I'd say you've been my favorite partner. We were the best, Richard. No matter what anyone thinks.

This scene makes you want more. Dick and Damian's time as the Dynamic Duo was cut short. Just as the two were finding their stride, Batman returned from the 'dead.'

The fight scenes by Chris Burnham (and Jason Masters on the Red Robin scene) look great and are highlighted by having each panel focus on the characters rather than incorporate a ton of detail to the backgrounds (that isn't to say the backgrounds are completely bare). Nathan Fairbairn's colors also make each panel pop off the page. As the action heats up, the focus is pulled back a bit resulting in a page with twenty chaotic panels (the chaotic part is a great touch). And the expression depicted on a couple pages at the end were priceless.

As for the certain big event that occurs, it's a fitting end for this issue. I can't say I'm in favor of the direction the story takes but there will obviously be some fallout and repercussions for what happens here.

The Bad

I'm sure I'm not the only one tired of "comic book deaths."

We have a few situations in this issue. Batman needs to make his escape. Red Robin is fighting alone. Damian ends up fighting close by Nightwing. Of these, the Red Robin scene felt unnecessary. Given that the story shifts to Jason Masters' art, it feels even more separated by the story that clearly focuses on a different character. Those four pages almost feel like filler.

It's really too bad the ending of this was revealed before we had the chance to read it. That's the nature of these sort of things. It's understandable to a certain degree that there's always a need to try to appeal to new readers in the comics market. It would just be nice to read an issue without already knowing the outcome. It takes away some of the impact. When we saw the [fake] Damian death in issue #1, it was surprising. When it happens here, it is tragic. I can only imagine if we weren't already expecting it to happen in THIS issue. This isn't a strike against this issue but it could have been more powerful if we had been caught off guard.

The Verdict

The moment teased in issue #1 is finally here. We get a good issue showcasing what Damian is capable of. Seeing his interaction with Dick Grayson makes you long for the time when they were partners. Batman's battle against Talia and Leviathan has reached its climax but it's not quite over yet. Talia makes a bold move that will cause repercussions in the rest of the Bat-titles. The comic is well laid out and the action is highlighted by the focus each panel has on the action and the colors enhance it all. A scene with Red Robin unfortunately feels a little out of place but does serve to explain where Tim is when it all hits the fan.

It's not the fault of the comic but the events would have been more powerful to readers if the outcome hadn't already been announced earlier in the week. Is this the end for a certain character? We'll have to see what happens in the next issue and other Bat-titles. R.I.P. indeed little fella.

Fantastic issue but so so sad :'( I really hope the R.I.P is like the Batman one where it had a different meaning. I really hope it stands for something like Robin's only In Pain :P

Morrison's "Batman & Robin," with Dick and Damian as the dynamic duo, is one of the most fun reads I've ever had. You're in for a real treat.

More importantly, it underscores the essential tragedy at the heart of Batman in a way that goes beyond Scott Snyder's "Death of the Family" storyline - something that, now, almost seems like a feint to lure attention away from Morrison's plans, given the near-promise of familial disaster and strife it offered from the very start - in that it offers Bruce Wayne the genuine, literal family that he's lacked since the death of his parents, only to pull it away from him just as he was starting to get used to the idea.

Morrison FTW

It was a well-executed issue. To be honest, I've felt for a while there were a few too many Bat-folk, and Robins in particular, around.

And let's remember Bucky Barnes and all the rest. Resurrection is only ever one editorial decision away.

Man I hope Bruce kills Talia for this. No-kill code be damned. It got his son killed, so I think it's time for Bruce to go ballistic.

I totally agree that this issue would have been much more powerful if we had not heard in advance about the death of Damian. Still, a pretty good issue overall. I'm pretty much there with you on the rating. You mentioned the Red Robin scene being unnecessary, and I partially concur, but on the other hand, it showed that Tim was in trouble and Damian rescued him. Also, this is an attack on the family, and it is important to see how this affects everybody. It also

set the stage for crap going down in this building, so...I would agree it could have been shorter.

My major problem with this issue stemmed from the Red Robin scene, but it was not because it was unnecessary, but that it was horrible scripted. I explain that in my review, but overall, its an issue worth buying if you are curious.

The BatWatch Review is up.

I've wondered if that is where it was heading as well.

I'm too saddened by Damian's death to say that I liked this comic, but the panels with Damian & Dick were pretty amazing.

Talia's scene near the end where she was briefly human really made me angry. Not because it was poorly done, but rather because of what it means about her. And it was frustrating. Liked her before, but I'm now totally okay with her being put down for good.

So does it even matter now that the Bat-family don't trust him as much anymore? They're going to immediately stop caring about once they have to console him about this.

This sucks, Damien was doing so well as a character and I wanted more of this relationship with Batman to be explored. Also Damien as future Batman is interesting as hell. Jason Todd and Tim Drake shouldnt even be considered part of the Bat family so I disagree with this notion of too many Robins running around.

This touches on a larger issue though. You know how new characters rarely stick this is why. Damien was a new character who was extremely popular, which is rare. To go off and kill him just perpetuates the cycle in which only Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and Avengers sell.

i agree to some point... especially the part that i think we all bored about the death... but to be honest, u know we all know the truth, we desprately "love" the other way. we actually do love the "death story" becoz it fuel with emotion.. anger, sadness, dissappointed, hope, etc...

i too have read "death or tragic story" many times. but few gave me an impact or flooding me with such emotions... like if i was batman (now), i might become red lantern at once and pull out talia heart, tear down damian's twin, then rampage to dc office and cursing GM and/or the editorial... (lol...j/k)... okey that's a bit to much. But i have to say... this one is quite good and well executed death story.

Farewell for now, Damian. Morrison and Tomasi did a fantastic job with the kid. DC, I do not want to see a Lazarus Pit anytime soon. Killing off a fictional character is easy, respecting their death seems to be the difficult part...

When Damian muttered, "Call him off at once... ...mother...", A pit deep inside my gut opened up and I realized, I was about to see the brutal murder of a scared ten year old boy. Made Jason's death look like a parade in comparisson. To me, Damian was the Robin of the 21st Century with an edge! While I'll miss the character, I have to admit, I don't think a comic book death has ever shaken me up this much before...

I never could get into the Damian Wayne character. Batman already had a clone named Terry McGinnis who was made for the sake of the future. Damian was made from a crazy lady's obsession with Bruce Wayne and everything about his existence is just plain unnatural. I get that people like him and were saddened by this issue but I honestly could not care less about this plot. The only thing I'm interested in now are the repercussions in the rest of the Bat books.

I don't really like how people say they're tired of deaths. Deaths are a natural part of stories and being a super hero is a dangerous job. It makes sense that there would actually be MORE deaths. What I am tired of is "bad" deaths or almost deaths. Deaths where it is just for shock value and the character just coming back anyways. What is the point of a death if the character isn't killed.

A good death doesn't really need to have a strong reason, but it needs to somehow have an effect in the comic or after the comic.

I'm fine with characters dying because there will always be new characters that I'll like just as much. And those characters that I loved have cemented a place in comics that I could read at any time. I don't need to go fishing for more books with that character.

It is like Nova. I love him for what he was, but no one will write him the way he was. Writers make good characters -- it isn't the characters themselves that jump out of the book and into your mind.

Overall, I know this is Morrison's character and no one ever wrote Damian like Grant did. And so far it hasn't been a great death, but there is no doubt that his death will have great effect on Batman in the future. I think in a couple of months this will be a good death.

I think Tim had a lot of screen time because Grant is still playing with the Ouroboros concept. When he started his Batman & Son arc, Tim was prevalent as Robin. It only makes sense to bring him back into the fold more as the arc closes itself up.

It ends just as it began.

I am really interested to see fan reactions to this comic, Death or the Family everyone was upset at no death, now that we have a death, does it make for a better story?

Also it maybe possible Scott did not write a death because he knew this was coming ...

@spinningbirdcake: Well then what's the point of having this death ? And even for a guy like Batman, this is just too much. It gets simply ridiculous after this if he goes back to his normal crime-fighting self after a couple of issues, with a new Robin.

It will mean that as a father, his SON's life meant nothing to him, just another casualty in his war on crime. He needs to go full-on killing, or simply retire after this. Otherwise it just won't make any sense.

I just can't get into Batman Inc. I don't know why. Ever since Morrison left JLA waaay back when I have not been much of a fan of his. I do have read this tho. Damian has grown on me, just not the idea that he's 10 years old. Sure it's a comic book but once again THERE ARE NO TOUGH 10 YEARS OLDS. That's why there's a weight divisions in fighting sports.

This is stupid. Morrison has (IMO) lost it.

a) He may have made the character, but that doesn't mean he can take him away. Does this mean if Bob Kane came back from the dead, he'd be allowed to kill off Batman however he wants? The reasoning is stupid. I don't care how long he's planned this for. The man is insane.

b) This completely negates anything happening with Death of the Family. It's good everything Gleason and Snyder did has entirely been overshadowed and broken by Morrison's changes. Not.

c) The New 52 is meant to bring in new, younger readers and now that the youngest, most accessible member of Batman's family is gone we just have TIm Drake who is basically a cardboard cut-out of a teenager. No offense; just my beliefs (I don't find him interesting).

d) How is this logical and/or well-written? Do you know how many people have died and been replaced in various forms of Batman literature? We don't even see the entire Bat-family in this iteration of Batman, but Morrison thinks it's a good idea to kill of and bring in more new characters. Stupid.

Do not be offended. These are simply my beliefs. Grant Morrison is a tool.

Anyone else happy Damian is dead? Is this going to reflect how Jason Todd died because he was to reckless? I'm almost just as interested in how Dick is going to take this. He and Damian grew close to each other too, people forget that. This book is a reminder. Maybe Batman won't kill, but I want to see what Dick does. I think it would make for an interesting story if he killed Talian instead of Batman. It sure would be mind spinner if he does.

I dont care how much people may hate the idea of Damian being brought back from the dead I CANT wait for it to happen. Damian Wayne is seriously one of my favorite characters in comics and while he went out like a champ I hope Grant brings him back before the end. I will be BEYOND pissed if Harper Row becomes the new Robin and Damian doesnt come back.

@doordoor123 I think the issue that people have with comic book deaths is not so much the killing off of a character. It's either the manner (or reason) in which it's done or the fact that they don't STAY dead, which just seems like a slap in the face.

Bruce is not going to kill Talia. He may really want to but we all know that the "Batman does Not Kill" code followed altered Bruce into the New 52 Universe. In I,Vampire # 5 he would not kill Vampires who are already dead. That is not going to happen. I liked the issue and I remember Grant Morrisson saying that he was going to bring a tragic end to his run. Bruce will not use the Pit because it will leave Damien insane. The kid was already crazy so imagine what the Pit would do to him. He is going to hit Talia hard but he is not going to kill her. He won't kill the clone either. The moral code Batman lives by makes him a special character. Remember in Killing Joke when he offered an olive branch of rehabilitation to the Joker after everything the Joker did. When I read that as a kid I thought it was insane!! But he stayed his hand. In Hush he did try and Gordan stayed his hand. I like that Bruce has a code and that he has values. Batman should not be a Tarintino Movie. He upholds that code because of what happened to Thomas and Martha. He values life. You can't turn him into Frank Castle. That is not who he is.

I will say this I was not happy that DC spoiled it ahead of time and I am disgusted with the speculators on Ebay who have taken advantage and jacked up prices. When DC does things like this it hurts long time customers who can't get to a store every week and buy books. Unless they reserve it or subscribe, they will miss out. Speculators are hurting comics. That's my opinion.

One more thing DC Editorial has a lot of explaining to do. Batman has gone through more physical and psychological torture in this last year than any hero. How can they justify this? He has been through the Court of the Owls, Leviathan, David Graves, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter and now his Son. Its crazy.

@noj: lol who the hell cares about Harper Row ? Damian is far more badass than that girl.

And IMHO Batman should just say Goodbye to the idea of Robin now, and to his no-kill code. Seriously what good has it done ? Arkham Asylum is full and people keep leaving it and coming back in like it's a Hotel, he got one adopted son killed, now his real son is murdered right in front of him, so if he wants to stay a legit superhero and not join Bugs Bunny & Mickey Mouse then he needs to do what needs to be done.

Even Superman, in Injustice has this much common sense...

The scenes with Dick and Damian did me in more than the ending.

agreed, mainly because we knew the ending, and that there will be no more Dick & Damian (supposedly)

@sho3s22 yup. Usually I loathe spoilers, but in this case they allowed me to enjoy the book even more.

@ThanosofAtlanta: It's not just any person who died as a casualty of Batman's war on crime. It's his own 10-year old son. If this does not break the no-kill code then it is completely ridiculous.

I am shocked to hear the news. And also saddened about the death of this loved character and thats because I dont even read batman comics. My heart goes out to the batman and robin comic fans. :-(

Tony I wish you weren't so easy on this book. It was unoriginal and basically killed off another Robin for no reason...Why would you take out a Robin unlike the rest of them that embraced becoming Batman. It seems like Morrison wanted to finish his story so badly that the folks at DC said eff Damian's fan base lets just keep Morrison happy...Thanks to that jerk we will never see the 666 universe come to be

I mean were going to miss out on this epic kid....Another bad call from DC Comics!

I guess what batman saw in the future was true. One of them was fated to die. This sucks on every level
