Batman, Incorporated #4 - Kill Box Review

4

It's time for Batman Inc. vs the League of Assassins!

Shining the spoiler signal...

The Good

Holy action and cameos, Batman! This issue is completely stuffed with familiar faces, solid writing, standout visuals and lots and lots of painful looking hits to the face. This issue pretty much boils down to one huge brawl as members of Batman Incorporated and the closer Bat-family take on a building packed with assassins.

The battles are fun and filled with quips, but every now and then the hits take a cringe-worthy and violent turn... most notably when arrows are involved (there's a few that are sure to make you exclaim). Seeing Gaucho continue to fight with an arrow impaled through his wrist was hilarious and gave me a new level of respect for the man. Though, sometimes it's the smaller things that'll standout. "Wingman" has a great set of panels where he easily drops two fools but what might not immediately catch your eye is when he walks over them... and happens to step on the guy's crotch. It's a painful panel to observe, especially when you gaze at the victim's expression. Another standout panel involves Batwing using a powerful sonic weapon... just don't stare at it for too long or you're sure to hurt your eyes.

To no one's surprise, writer Grant Morrison manages to find the right tone for Damian -- making him a brat, but a completely lovable one ("I beat two dogs unconscious. Some blood was spilled."). There's also a huge reveal about Wingman and it really makes me want to see more team ups with said individual and Damian. Despite the rocky relationship, they have a fair amount in common and it could make for some incredibly entertaining conversations.

Fanboy moment for me: Shrike returns! ...only to get kicked in the face by Nightwing. Hey, at least that's in character for him.

The Bad

Chris Burnham's art is sure to be hit or miss for many. While I do like it, there's quite a few things that irk me, especially surrounding some faces. When Wingman's identity is revealed, he's sporting a chin that would make Jay Leno jealous and to be blunt, I would have no idea who he is if we're relying only on the artwork.

Damian's line, "What does everyone know that I don't?" expressed my own thoughts at the conclusion, but I'm certain we'll be treated to the details in issue #5.

The Verdict

This issue was pretty much a solid dose of popcorn entertainment. It's sporting a more than unique style as the action fluctuates from fun to downright painful. Throw in some sharp dialogue and an interesting cliffhanger and what you have is an issue well worth your time and money.

Love this series so much and I don't want this story to ever end. The last page made really got me excited for next issue.

This issue deserved 5 stars! Chris Burnham's art is awesome, I don't get how it could be "miss" for anyone

The Wingman reveal was really dissapointing for me. I was expecting someone different.

Other than that (and Burnham's art, which I'll never like) this was a solid issue.

I've been a die hard Chris Burnham fan since Officer Downe. It's amazing seeing him on a mainstream title. Glad DC is taking some risks on artists like Burnham, Jeff Lemire and Becky Cloonan. Seeing Merlyn was a treat. Love Damian's Redbird costume. Next issue should be great. Always enjoy the Damian as future Batman stories.

I like Burnhams art but the only thing that bugs me is how he draws Damian. His body is too small and his head is too big. Other than that amazing issue. NOBODY captures Damian's voice like Grant Morrison even though some have come close. Seeing all the members of Batman Inc duke it out was awesome and I love the reveal of Wingman (even though I called it a few months ago). CANT wait for next month. Batman #666 is my favorite single issue of all time.

actually loved the reveal of who wingman is and would love to see him and damian team up in the future! Great series, but I don't see it being written by anyone besides Morrison. I hope it ends with issue 12.

to find out that HE was wingman.... was a real downer... with so many good characters why him? it doesn't seem like he is the type of person that would do that...

I loved the Wingman reveal, particularly since I actually enjoy that character. I also enjoyed Damian's reasons for not approving, considering the source lol. I love everything about this series: the story, the characters, the writer, the artist.

wow what an issue. grant morrisons batman is just my favorite, hands down. it is just so perfect, batman is always in situations that are immense and seemingly impossible to overcome, but he does because hes batman. his version of the character just works for me. Love what Snyder is doing, but morrison will always be my favorite

I really have no idea why damian hates jason but i really love the writing and art of morrison/burnham in this series.

Can't wait for it to be over so I can put it out of my memory.

Fantastic issue,I wonder how many more LOS guys are gonna get involved.Deathstroke,Shiva,Cain, maybe even Bane, the possibilities are endless.

And Morrison takes a dump on the new-52 continuity again...YAY.

WHAT?! I DIDN'T SEE MAD DOG.

*grabs issue

EDIT: Nevermind, he's the one that gets knocked out once the lights go out. Sadly, I didn't make that connection at first. I was so thrilled about seeing Shrike, haha.

The reveal of Wingman was great! Hope this remains as a thing across the other related books though.

Cool cliffhanger. Wonder if some of things revealed will actually roll into the mainline books since Grant's stuff always seems to stand on its own despite being part of the New 52.

Chris Burnham's art is AMAZING Gregg

Great review. You caught several things that I missed.

I have a theory in my review about the individual standing behind Talia at the beginning of the issue. I would like any and all opinions.

I like his art up until faces. I'm with Gregg on that. Also, the creepy judge at the beginning of the issue was really odd. Obviously, it must have been a mask, but it did not look like a mask, and that is just odd.

I'm sorry Morrison is leaving after only twelve issues. I was really starting to get back into Batman Inc.

I didn't like this issue at all!

Posted by MonkeyToe

I have mixed feeling about this issue and this title on a hole. The story is ok but as a new DC reader I don't know who any of these people are outside of the bat family and so I don't feel connected to any of them really.

On top of that, what is up with the 'Wingman' reveal? I thought he wanted nothing to do with Batman? Seems like too sudden of a change of heart for this character.

Wingman's reveal was the obvious choice and therefore I'm a little disappointed by it. But hey, it works. This does bury the hatchet officially between these two characters I guess, but now Jason has not one, but two identities , while Tim is still stuck with his crappy, pre-graduation name.

Was this his first New 52 appearance? When I saw him, it was like seeing a ghost.
