Batman, Incorporated #13 - The Dark Knight and the Devil's Daughter

5

This is the end. It's the end of many things but also the beginning for others.

The Good

This is what it's all come down to. Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham have been guiding Batman and Batman Incorporated down a dark path these past few months. Of course the story goes back further - into Morrison's previous Batman run. Batman's fight against Talia and Leviathan has left quite a mess. Batman and Gotham City won't be the same after this.

Since this series started, there has been several questions left unanswered and new ones thrown in our faces. From the confrontation between Batman and Talia, Bruce Wayne's interrogation and the new developments at the end, this is an extremely fitting story to mark the end of Morrison's tenure. You'll find yourself smiling seeing certain things occur yet you'll still have that sinking feeling over some of the darkness that goes along with the story. I was especially grateful and excited to see the return of a certain character. Let's hope we get more.

Chris Burnham's art is a welcomed sight. He manages to deliver nicely gritty detailed panels that make you feel what's going on. Bruce Wayne might have looked a little too beat up but at the same time, it's great to see a hero actual wear his battle wounds rather than miraculously heal moments later. It's a joy having Burnham's art for the entire issue.

A big thank you to Grant Morrison for a panel with a character uttering three words that completely sums up what Batman's about.

The Bad

Batman telling Bat-Cow to "Shut up" wasn't cool.

The Verdict

Batman Incorporated was a fascinating experiment. It took Batman to different places and introduced many great characters. It's fitting that with Grant Morrison's departure, we may be seeing less of the idea as a whole (let's not forget the one-shot coming in August). This series gave us a lot of what we wanted to see. We had some endings and some beginnings. The Leviathan story felt it went on a little too long at times but there were definitely some great moments throughout. Who else is ready to re-read all the stories from the beginning once more? You'll get excited over the events here but you'll still be a little sad over seeing some things end. It's not often a story can tug on your heart-strings like this.

I'm glad it's finally over. The ending felt flat to me though. Anticlimactic IMO.

Great end. I really liked the reference to the unending nature of comics.

When Gordon mentioned Zero Year, it sort of felt like a passing of the torch to Snyder.

Hopefully the Epilogue is followed up on by somebody in the future.

Kathy frickin Kane is back with a lovely hair due! I loved this issue! I liked how Batman handled the whole situation in a way I didn't expect him to. A bunch of Bruce's anger seemingly evaporated which was my only problem with this but, I got over that once I took a step back and looked at the run as a whole. This will read better in a trade for sure.

Glad to see Morrison still respects the no kill code. Why can't people understand the value of this ethos? Not to mention that the character who's even less likely to kill than Batman has killed 3 times this year across different media.

@darknightspideyfanboy: I fail to see how Superman needs to be made interesting by perverting him into a totalitarian despot instead of the good natured protector of Earth we know him to be. If that's what you like, fine but don't expect that to show what kind of character Superman is. Also, Superman's 'killing' of Doctor Light was poorly executed and the slate was basically wiped clean, making it pointless for Superman to kill Light since he'll be brought back and it's clear Superman isn't responsible. As for Man of Steel, I've said enough about that killing on here before.

@muyjingo: Are you kidding me? He's the guy that was raised by salt of the earth farmers and imbued with a unshakable moral compass along with him cherishing all life, protecting the Earth and parts of the universe too and even sparing his enemies from lethal punishment. Evidently, this guy should be less likely to kill than the slightly unhinged Batman who doesn't kill to prevent him becoming like the criminals he's trying to stop.

Batman has a trauma with killing people. Superman was only told he shouldn't kill. Which one do you think has a bigger impact on a person's moral compass, both consciously and unconsciously?

It's been a big part of the character's moral compass that he doesn't kill. He gets called out on it time and time again yet refuses to do so even under extraneous circumstances in well written Superman stories. For me, that holds more impact on a character's moral compass than Batman's traumatising experience as a child. Bruce is always one step away from becoming the very thing he fights against whereas Superman is nowhere near that point.

Currently re-reading the whole thing. I am amazed he was allowed to tell this story for so long. I am a little sad it is over so many other DC books feel so forced it was great that Morrison's Batman was always unpredictable and stood out with it's own voice. Loved Burnham's art on this series he should have a good future in comics.

I also wasn't sure what was going on with the graves in the end. Are they two empty graves that are supposed to be intimidating? Was one of them Damian's grave? Is it Thomas and Martha's graves? Didn't do a great job establishing that.

Honestly, this whole ending sort of fell flat to me, epilogue excluded.

Wait, but Kathy Kane saying "Batman doesn't kill" is weird, because Morrison was the guy who had Batman shoot and kill Darkseid. I mean, it was a good issue, but I feel like Morrison was building up to something much less grim in his other runs. He contradicted everything he wrote about Batman.

I thought it was pretty lame for a arch he had been building up over seven years it felt rushed, I did like the room full of damians, cant wait for that little guy to come back into the story, probably as a bad dude at first but he will become good again, also were the bodies that were taking Damian and Talia or the Waynes it looked like Taila and Damian.

Batman didn't technically kill Darkseid, Superman did when he cancelled out Darkseid's vibration. If anything, he just helped show him the door. Bruce also said that he was making an exception when he shot Darkseid, and really that's the only option when you're facing the end of all reality.

I think it was Damains and Talias bc the graves were unmarked which Gordon asked about them earlier in the issue.

I had that consideration a while after I posted my initial comment, and yeah, it makes sense. Ra's is harvesting Lazarus blood, so it would make sense for him to grave rob Talia and Damian with the intent of bringing them back from the dead. Maybe he intends to use Damian to lead the Sons of Batman. Too bad Grant sort of just left that wide open.

I'm happy with the way Morrison decided to end his Bat-era. He closed a lot of plot threads and doors while still managing to leave enough open for future writers. Also the comparison between the Leviathan army attacking Gotham and Zero Year has me interested for a number of reasons. A.) Gordon actually calls it Zero Year and B.) He equates it to being a war. I do like that Rha's is shown alive and still possesses the cloning tech at the end. It fit thematically and left the door to Damian's future resurrection (c'mon it's comics it's gonna happen)

@lvenger: I think on the surface it's easy to think that Superman is less likely to kill, because he has the boy scout persona while Batman relies on fear. I think they are both equally unlikely to kill for different reasons. Yet, it is Superman who has killed in the comics, not Batman.

@lvenger said:

It's just as big a part of Batman's moral code. Everything you just said applies equally true for Batman....

I would've liked it much more if Jason Todd had saved Batman, or a least if Morrison had made his ideas a bit more clear, fleshing them out a little bit more. Meta-material? How did Spyral get so powerful? Why is Kathy Kane a part of it? Morrison should've gotten an 80 page, grand send off like Geoff Johns did. Instead he got the standard 25-30 issue, and had to wrap his epic up with a cheap, unexplained ending.

Red and black. The joke and the punchline. Talia and Batman. Crime and the superhero.

The hole in things is this issue. It repeats forever, in a circle. Oroboro.

Batman and Robin will never die.

They're stuck in the hole in things: comics.
