Batman: Assault On Arkham

4

The Suicide Squad has their latest task: break into Arkham Asylum. When Batman and Joker are brought into the mix, you can bet their mission won't be easy.

Right when Batman: Assault on Arkham hits you with its character introductions, you can tell this is a totally different kind of DC animated movie and it's one that the team likely had a total blast creating. When dealing with the Suicide Squad, one might expect a movie that has an overwhelming dark and gritty atmosphere. And while there is plenty of violence and twisted material to go around, writer Heath Corson and directors Jay Oliva and Ethan Spaulding focused on making this an entertaining adventure that is heavily influenced by the comedic heist genre.

Because of the amusing tone (which of course has an appropriately funky or energetic and upbeat score at times), Batman: Assault on Arkham is able to feel like a mostly unique experience while also including everything we've come to expect from a DC animated film. There's great action, Batman definitely has his moments, and there's a ton of fan service. Fans of the video game franchise will absolutely recognize several locations and, well, let's just say they bring a lot of fan service with the final scene at the Asylum. For the most part, the celebration of the comedic heist genre works very well, but I will admit the occasional tonal shift was a little jarring (if we jumped from from intense electronic music to a score that matches the Arkham franchise's environment). Still, the focus on making this group's suicidal mission enjoyable instead of bleak really allows it to stand apart from other DC animated movies.

Sure, the recent project Justice League: War was also about big fun, but that was done through spectacle and popcorn entertainment. This one is embracing that same level of fun and excitement but in a totally different way. There's plenty of heist tropes to go around (the team walking together at a way slower pace just looked a little odd instead of cool), but it's still a good ride and you can really tell they had a great time directing this one and really tried to spice things up with different kinds of shots.

I won't spoil anything, but let's just say this Deadshot fan is very pleased. Batman gets his due and has quite a few cool bits (especially when he fights the team), but Floyd Lawton (voiced by Neal McDonough) leads the way and they gave this guy a bunch of jaw-dropping moments. From his increasingly violent rivalry with Captain Boomerang to his conflict with Batman's most famous fiend, the team behind this one did a stellar job putting this assassin front and center. Truthfully, some of his dialogue felt a little cliche, but overall, they more than succeeded in making him this movie's true badass and memorable lead. In the end, this really feels like a love letter to Deadshot. As for the rest of the cast, the movie basically celebrates the primary characteristics you'd expect from them. Harley's always enjoying the madness and this produces more than a few amusing gags; King Shark's blunt and John DiMaggio makes sure some of his line are hysterical (I loved his chanting as two teammates were fighting); Black Spider there's for thrilling melees; Captain Boomerang's arrogant and sarcastic; and Killer Frost's there for her powers and to give King Shark a little more depth. Truthfully, it feels like Frost received the least focus out of the main group, but she still has a moment or two to shine. There's a number of other characters, but don't worry, I won't spoil the cameos!

As expected, Kevin Conroy is awesome as Batman and Troy Baker continues to prove he's a terrific Joker. Don't worry, Batman is a secondary character but they're still able to give him a proper amount of time and Conroy's stern and formidable performance lives up to expectations. His action scenes are ridiculously enjoyable, too. Watching him systemically take down armed forces was beyond exciting and there's some very well executed hand-to-hand fights. It's a little odd to see Batman somewhat struggle with a nameless soldier, but honestly, the scene is presented so well and it's delightfully frenetic. Baker's so charismatic as the Clown Prince of Crime and does a stellar job finding the right balance between levity and horrific darkness. There's a few lines from him that had the audience erupt in laughter and applause. This movie's all about the Suicide Squad, but the minds behind this movie truly did a praiseworthy job implementing these two iconic characters and making sure their inclusions are a ton of fun.

There were a few noticeable inconsistencies in action scenes and they were a bit distracting. They aren't a big deal -- not by any means -- but they're worth at least noting. For example, King Shark's durability is all over the place (he goes from being harmed by melee attacks to being bulletproof to having bullets penetrate him). There's another brute force character that goes from needing to block bullets with gauntlets to charging through a sea of assault rifle attacks like its apparently nothing. It's also a little odd to establish Deadshot as this supremely gifted marksman but then have him essentially spray and pray at times or miss with some shots that would seem easy for him. Minor gripe: they made a point of telling audiences Black Spider thinks he's a vigilante, but then he apparently snaps an Arkham employee's neck and is cool with killing others in an explosion? You'd think he'd be against that and try to find another way to accomplish his part of the plan?

Honestly, the narrative here isn't ever that compelling and the twists definitely won't surprise you. There's on moment where Riddler's talking about how he's surprised the team hasn't solved something yet, but the twist was made pretty obvious several scenes back. Now, it's obvious this movie's all about giving us a good time, but it's worth noting that it often feels like the plot exists solely to move us from one action scene to the next.

Parents, this one certainly earns its PG-13 rating. If you're not cool with your kid witnessing some graphic violence, cursing and sexual situations, I'd strongly recommend watching this one without them.

Batman: Assault on Arkham is absolutely worthy of your time and attention. It embraces the popular video game franchise with open arms and has a ridiculous amount of fun playing with the world's various characters. The story may not blow you away and there's a few static moments, but it's a thrilling ride that's packed with exciting action and massively amusing relationships between characters. They took a risk making this latest effort so heavily influenced by movies like Ocean's Eleven and Snatch, but it paid off and the end result is an exhilarating and memorable adventure. This is a movie that I'm absolutely going to rewatch once it comes out on Blu-ray.

Batman: Assault on Arkham becomes available digitally next Tuesday (July 29) and its Blu-ray/DVD goes on sale August 12.

I hoped that Suicide Squad : Hell to Pay is going to be a sequel to Assault on Arkham. I was wrong.

Good movie, better than Son of Batman. I have never seen so many people die in a Batman film, it was great. A solid 7/10, a good popcorn action movie with a little bit of depth.

not gonna lie Killer Frost and Harley was looking super sexy in this movie, especially Frost. Guess when you have Jennifer Hale as your voice actor sounding dark and sultry and it can't be helped. Also King Shark was the freaking man in this movie, that big guy had me rolling every scene. Lasly, Black Spider looked impressive in this, hopefully DC will decide to use him more in the mainstream verse.

LOL yes! I was surprised how sexy they were also.

Overall I really enjoyed it, by no means is it a great character piece but it uses its plot and structure to have more fun with its characters better than JL:War or Son of Batman. Solid pulpy Suicide Squad story is what it told and that's what I wanted for the most part.

I managed to get my blog post to post so here are some longer thoughts on the feature

@redleader1: Exactly. Year One is one of those particularly darker stories where a higher level of maturity may have been acceptable. But that was before DC movies (fallaciously) deduced that overdoing adult themes would make their movies "more adult".

Gripes aside, Assault on Arkham at least had a good story and good characterization to make up for a lot of its flaws. More than I can say for some other movies.

@redleader1: Not necessarily a big thing at the end, but the fact that they tried to end the movie with Waller dropping the F-bomb. I can look past the occasional swear, and excessive violence (to an extent), but it is just becoming far too much as of late.

@supbatz: what is the big thing at the end to make it "adult" that made you angry. And ya these movies are getting more "mature" every time. From Lois flipping off brainiac and supes swearing to nightwing almost saying the f word. I mean despite the violence, which was necessary, there was nothing inappropriate about under the red hood and it is beloved by fans.

I LOVED IT!!!

THis was great! Plus because it was an original story, i had no idea where this was going. (al though i did got the twist in the end regarding batman)
Makes me wonder why DC doesnt do more original stuff. Instead of using the comicbook stories. They are good, i agree, but at best it gives a good feel of nostalgia and im never outsmarted by them. I WANT MORE OF THIS!!!

Agreed, this movie was really good.

Completely agree. It had great action, funny moments and great animation (man Killer Frost was hot) and I love the action movie/heist feel to it. The movie is one of my favorites from DC.

Hell she was.So was Harley!! I applaud DC for letting go to that extent.I thought Marvel was supposed to be the edgier of the two lol.Suicide Squad said to hell with that lol

I mean, I understand some complaints about this not being very kid friendly..but screw the kids, this is the Suicid Squad!! I want violence, strong language and Harley being sexy!

Hell yeah dude. They are plenty other DC movies and cartoons for kids!

The first 2/3 were phenomenal, but the last 1/3 was atrocious. Meh, still a good movie, but I prefer to skip the ending and just come up with my own fan-fic 1/3 that would have been far better.

@the_impersonator:

This movie is based on the arkham games, if you ppl played it you would understand why batman left, the whole point of origins was for him to trust the police and that is exactly what he did.

-The guards didnt die, watch the scene again, they where knocked down, nothing there looked like a kill.

-Bane would never die he is in arkham asylum so...

-Look at the cables in the bomb and youll get the joke.

This movie was great batman felt like a wrecking machine as he should and deathshot was actually awesome.

Just watched the movie. I was pleasantly surprised, as my expectations were not very high. Definitely not the best DC movie around, but a solid watch.

The Bad –

Ughhhh… Whoever is in charge of editing these movies is seriously slipping lately. SO MUCH PAUSING BETWEEN DIALOGUE! It makes a lot of scenes just downright painful to watch. Comedy often falls very flat because too much time is put in between characters words. The same problem was incredibly present in Son of Batman.

While most of the voice acting was pretty good, certain choices just seemed off – namely King Shark and basically any background character.

This movie had a serious case of “Guards not shooting when they have the actual chance to do so and then dying because of this.” Seriously, you’d think that guards at Arkham wouldn’t hesitate to shoot when confronted with mass murderers. That really took me out of the action on multiple occasions.

Character models were, for the most part, very off. The animation itself was good, but the designs (Waller, Batman, the Joker, out-of-costume Deadshot etc.) were just plain bad.

While the script was better than most recent DC movies, there were a lot of flaws:

“He and Harley took their mallet and left.” …No. That is just not something that ANYBODY in that situation would say. Talk about forced exposition in order to have Batman catch up with the audience on the plot.

The Joker DOES NOT say “I’m here, bitches.”

Waller DOES NOT say “Nobody screws the Wall!”

Ending the movie on “Mother f-“ is just another example of that pathetically pandering attempt to make these movies “For adults”. And as usual, it just falls flat. I’m all for making the movies as dark, violent, and adult as they need to be to serve the story. But they’re just trying far too hard. Unless the story actually warrants/benefits from constant swearing and adult themes, don’t be so overt about it. I like to enjoy these movies with my younger sisters, when possible.

Some serious over-sexualization in this movie. Lots of boobs. It was frankly quite awkward and pandering.

Killer Frost and King Shark’s relationship was randomly hinted at, and then received absolutely not payoff.

The Good –

For the most part, voice acting was pretty great. Conroy, Baker, Pounder, Hale, and Walsh did excellent jobs reprising their characters. And whoever played Deadshot and Boomerang were spot-on.

The movie did quite an excellent job of including so many different characters. I’m actually VERY impressed at just how many characters got screen time in this movie without taking away from the plot or feeling unnecessary (the Suicide Squad, Waller, Batman, Alfred, Gordon, Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Bane, Poison Ivy etc.)

I also laud the decision to make Batman more of a secondary character in the movie. Giving the villains a chance to carry the movie was a treat.

Characterization was excellent. Pretty much everybody was in-character throughout the movie (with a few minor deviations which I chalk up to flaws in the script – mostly from those poor attempts to make the movie more adult).

Solid Harley Quinn interpretation. I’m a big Harley fan, and she is just one of those characters that people rarely seem to get right. But the design, acting, and characterization were pretty darn good here, I think. She was a bit more sexual than I tend to prefer Harley (again, I chalk this up to pandering attempts to make the movie adult), but the movie succeeds where the New 52 fails: making Harley fun. The cute/laughable/fun aspect of the character comes before the sadism and the psychoticism. She was a plenty dark and dangerous character, but not so much that she wasn’t cute and funny.

There was enough action to satisfy, but not so much that it hindered the plot. This is a problem that the past three movies have had, so I’m glad that Assault on Arkham sidestepped this flaw.

Cameos galore. And in a way that didn’t take away from the plot.

Overall, I think that the good outweighs the bad for this movie. If the creators hadn’t so laboriously attempted to make the movie dark and adult to the point where it just took me out of the experience, I might even hold it up-to-par with some of the better DC movies.

7 out of 10 from me. Worth purchasing on DVD when it comes out. Flawed, but good enough.

don't buy it people. it's garbage. better than son of batman, but that's still horrible. some dare to compare it to under the red hood. ugh. none of the characters are done right, plot so stupid you can declare it a danger to itself, batman letting murder happen left and right. the arkham name is officially synonymous with garbage, after this and origins.

Oh boy. Another overly-violent, completely action driven movie. I had pretty high hopes for this one.

But it sounds like it'll just fall into the same category as Justice League: War, Flashpoint, and Son of Batman.

This.
And yes it falls in the same category. But at least it is better than Son of Batman. The whole movie feels like a 12 years old idea of "mature movie".

Seems like whenever batmans not the main character he's a total BAMF, like in this where he curbstomps the whole Suicide Squad.

But overall, this movie was awesome, and surprised me in a good way. I didn't mind the focus on the Squad because everyone was so damn cool.

And there's like 3 topless scenes so that's a plus too

not gonna lie Killer Frost and Harley was looking super sexy in this movie, especially Frost.

@the_impersonator: Well...The way the scene added up kinda made clear that batman knew. Bruce told amanda "I'm warning you!" and then when he leaves Amanda is killed.

That said, I might have interpreted it the wrong way.

When he gave a warning, I think it means that Batman is making sure Amanda doesn't interfere with his turf and allowing the Suicide Squad to go on a suicide mission, killing random people.

We actually don't know if Deadshot killed Amanda. That's something we have to think about, whether Amanda is going get shot or not.

Good:

  • Every Scene with Joker. Troy is a wonderful voice actor and I burst out laughing numerous times thanks to him.
  • The Suicide Squad was really cool, especially killer frost and captain boomerang.
  • Great fight sequences.
  • I love how BIG batman's name was with the supervillains. He's like a legend.

Bad

  • A lot of out of character moments. Batman was okay with the team killing many Arkham Guards? Even if he was posing as Black Spider, he would never have stood by such acts. He also threw Bane into the water with metal gauntlets on his hands and his powers lost. WTF? And....did Batman pretty much allow deadshot to kill Amanda waller? Really?!
  • Holy crap, how many characters had to die? And the whole arkham asylum breakout was never resolved. Did Batman forget? Or did the writers feel that it wasn't important? You don't show something like that and then throw it out the window.
  • Was anyone else angry that this movie was called Batman:Assault on Akrham even though it's honestly about the suicide squad?

Overall, I give it a 5.5/10

Actually, Batman didn't know Deadshot was going to kill Amanda Waller. It's not like he knows everything what's going to happen. Deadshot was way far behind. It's like that movie, Wanted.

As for the other points you mentioned in the bad section, I do agree with you. It was awkward for Batman to let the Suicide Squad to kill the guards, which I forgot to mention it earlier.

Harley and Deadshot were my favorites! I really enjoyed the heist feel of this, and all the cameos, and seeing the locations from the game was great. I'd like another film set in the Arkham Universe, that centers on Batman and crew. We only get little bits of them in the game.

@supbatz: Under the redhood was a great surprise to me. It was the robin(sort of) movie that allowed me to see how cool the robins could be. Sadly, I do feel that flash point will be the last dc movie for a bit that wasn't just fun and games with action put in. that's not something bad in itself, But I do miss seeing these movies as something mostly serious with some humor to break the ice.
