Batman and Robin #10 - Terminus, Scar of the Bat

4

Someone is gathering a bunch of people that have been beaten by Batman. There is also a gathering of the "Robins" happening. If those don't grab your attention, I'm not sure what will.

Villains teaming up together to take on their common foe is an idea more bad guys should follow.

The Good

Why do villains continue trying to 'get away' with their evil schemes on their own? Years back, in Marvel comics, we saw the Acts of Vengeance storyline. There is value in villains teaming together to try to defeat their enemy. The main problem is, they can never get along or trust each other long enough to accomplish their scheme. But here in the pages of BATMAN AND ROBIN, someone is gathering some lower tier villains that all have a grudge against Batman. If villains like the Rogues can work together against Flash, you would think there would be ones that would want to team up against Batman. To make it more interesting, we see a new villain that is responsible for this gathering.

The nice thing is, this isn't the main focus on the issue. We get to see some of the Bat-Family out of their uniforms (in their civilian guises). This allows for some more character interaction, something important to see once in awhile after the recent storyline with Nobody and the Night of the Owls crossover.

If all that wasn't enough, there's another gathering as well. Why would the former Robins be called to meet? What could this possibly mean? There's a definite cool factor to seeing them together and it opens an interesting door to where this story angle will go.

I've been a fan of Patrick Gleason's art on the series but it's the also John Kalisz's colors that really make the images pop off the page. The way Damian looks whether out in the night or in the Batcave, you immediately get a sense of how much of a little $#!& he is. And let's just point out there will be a fight with Damian and another Robin.

The Bad

The idea of the crooks gathering together is great. There is the obvious concern that we know how it will play out. They'll mistrust each or fumble over each other. Hopefully this will be different.

When we see some of the Robins gathered out of their costumes, it's a little odd. They looked a little awkward. The situation could have been part of it but it could get a tiny bit difficult to keep track of who was who when they weren't all standing side by side.

Red Hood's mask looked pretty weird as well.

The Verdict

A new story arc, a new villain, some downtime in the Bat-family and a bunch of Robins together. There's a lot to look forward to here. We've been seeing a lot of action throughout this series and it's great to finally see a new arc begin. You also can't argue with the idea of seeing more than one Robin in series that has "Robin" in the title. Peter Tomasi is prepping some dark things and you still get that sense that something really bad is coming. There seems to be a dark cloud hanging over the characters when they're in this book and it adds to the excitement. As much as I love Patrick Gleason's art (throughout the series), there were moments where some characters looked a little off. What makes this book feel different from BATMAN is the sense that Batman is working with others, hence the title. It's a great change of pace and gives each book a separate feel. I've complained about too many Batman books in the past but Tomasi, Gleason and Kalisz keep me wanting more each month.

I really liked this issue, and I've been looking forward to the war of the Robins stuff, but at the times the bits with the villains felt like DC had accidentally printed some pages from a different arc in this book at random. Hopefully it'll come together better in the next issue. Also Tomasi writes Damien perfectly.

I wonder if no mention of Stephanie Brown is saying something about her status in the new 52. hmm... Damien is arrogant and obsessive enough to want to prove that he's better than her too, even if she was Robin for just a short while

This title should change it's name to Robin & Batman. I love seeing all four Robins together. This was the first time I've got to read any Tim Drake since the new 52. I really miss him. The Terminus stuff really took the back seat in this issue and that was fine. I like the idea of a group of small time crooks who have been mutilated by Batman coming together. Just not as much as an all Robin Damian challenge.

also putting all 4 Robins together really makes you realize just how out of place Tim's new suit is compared to the others

Damian is a little crazy, but the issue was good. Really liked it. The new villain looks pretty cool, don't know about his henchmen, they seem like they would be throw away characters.

I thought about Stephanie too. If she were in the issue I would probably have picked it up. It seems like a glaring oversight to me to leave her and Cassandra Cain out of the New 52.

I'm relatively sure that they'll pop up in Inc. but I read somewhere a couple of months before the reboot hit that Steph's was no longer Robin.

@feargalr: It really does seem like Stephanie was no longer a Robin in the New 52 and honestly Im completely fine with that. Her tenure as Robin was VERY short and mired with controversy and quite a few people myself included dont really even count her as a Robin to begin with. Dont get me wrong I LOVED her as Batgirl but the less said about her time as Robin the better.

@danhimself: exactly what I was thinking

See, when I've tried reading Teen Titans ( and I have TRIED but that book is terrible) it was just too little of anything I would normally like. But I miss Tim especially considering he's always been my favorite Robin. But that suit has to be burned in a fire. It's really ridiculous. The red and black motif is fine, it's clearly working for all the past Robins as well, but the pouches and the stupid feather things, just no. Give him back his own series (Red Robin was always stellar to me) and a new costume and you'd be set. It was finally nice seeing Tim not forgotten about in the Bat-verse again except when he would be mentioned here and there.

@Jodez: That was my favorite panel as well! Jason's facepalm, Tim's unamusement. And Dick's face just screams "Really dude?" Great characterization.

@DickDastardly: I honestly loved the detail on Jasons red hood mask.

I really liked how Gleason details the eyes on Jason's "hood" it is cool to me.

Really good issue. The interactions between the Robins were great. The villain in the story was almost irrelevant.

Damian is such a brat and Tomasi writes him perfectly. What irks me is that because of Batman Inc (which he was just shot in the head), you have to suspend your disbelief for all that is happening in this book. Is this book happening before that incident, is him being shot a shame? These two books existing together through a wrench in what is an already murky continuum. Frankly, I'd rather they keep this book and get rid of Batman Inc, personally I like the book (especially the art) a lot more.

I think Tomasi's handling of Damian was really regressive in this issue, considering how much growth and maturity he's shown as of late.

I just got to read this, best issue of this book I've read since the new 52. But that may be because it's whole Damian/Jason fight set up.
