Batman #713 - In Storybook Endings

3

The final issue of Batman before the relaunch. Rather than put an end to the series, the issue serves as more of an introduction to the characters. This might not be essential reading but it's fun and gives some good insight in of the characters new view on things.

The final issue of Batman after 71 years. Rather than put a final nail in the coffin, the issue serves as more of a celebration of the Dynamic Duo.

The Good

What do you do when a series is facing its final issue? We are seeing several issues obviously geared to wrapping things up. Rather than try to dwell on the fact that the volume is ending along with the numbering, the issue focuses on the characters. This issue felt more like a "point 1" issue that Marvel has been doing. This is a way for people to get a slightly different look at the story of Batman and Robin.

The story is narrated by someone close to the Bat-family. Part of the fun is trying to figure out who is telling the story, why and who is hearing it. The art captures key moments in Batman's history that is a great homage to the past.

The Bad

While being a fun issue with some obvious bias in some of the retelling, if you've been reading Batman, you already know the story. I've seen some comments from readers wondering if these final issues are worth getting because everything is re-starting in September. That isn't necessarily the case. Hardcore readers might be left wanting or expecting more but it is a fun look and shows a little...evolution in the character telling the story.

The Verdict

This is the last issue of Batman...until September 21. There's no need to get hung up on the change in numbering. The Batman stories will continue. Because Bat-events are said to carry over into the "New 52" universe, this issue doesn't put an end to the characters's story. Instead, we get a celebration and look back at the key moments that defined all the Batmans and Robins. If you haven't been keeping up on Batman and want to know the core of their story, you get it here. Let's just hope that too much doesn't change next month to make this issue null and void.

G-Man, you remember when you said there wouldnt be any orgin stories!??! Well what is it now what we have here?!?! I am really angry at DC Comics. Flashpoint's mini issues were mostly bad. Most of the issues of the last 2 months (except Detective Comcis) were really bad... and why!??! "because we are working for september"... oh man, if this is IT -the result of september- then i dont want a relaunch!!!

Oh yeah, I am speaking from a POV of a 25 y old man here... i dont know what the younger Comicvine users think, AND I DONT CARE ABOUT THEM.

Really i am thinking about quiting comics.. thats so bad... and i am sooooooooo angry about that book now.

Because Bat-events are said to carry over into the "New 52" universe,

...Unless those Bat-events involve Casandra Cain, Stephanie Brown, or Barbara Gordon as Oracle.

I enjoyed this issue. It was a pretty good read. It was a overview of some of the Bat crew's history and a small story intertwined with it. I agree that it shines a new light on the storyteller of the issue. Looking forward to September.

My biggest fear in the future of Bat titles (besides Steph Brown (though Gail Simone told me she has heard from Steph in the new 52)) is that things wont be explained. So we won't get an explanation of Dick's return to Nightwing, I really don't want them to say "he was Batman and now he's not "

Also, I REALLY wanted  Dick to have a heart-to-heart with Damian before he goes off to work with Bruce. Telling him he's only a little ways away if he needed him, but now I feel cheated. Maybe it will happen in Batman and Robin.

@krazyman27: Read JLA #60 and you'll get some info on why Dick is becoming Nightwing again.

@limbani: I really didn't consider this an origin/starting point/jumping on issue at all. The whole story being told from the subjective point of view of the narrator relies heavily on the reader understanding how important the small, easily overlooked details like the importance of the use of the word "friend" really are. He's a biased narrator, who gives himself away in his dislike of some characters. It's not so much the story that he's telling the kids but the act of telling that story that's the plot of this book.

This isn't an "origin story" in the classical sense at all. It's an exploration of the journey that Dick and Damian have taken as Batman and Robin and how that's allowed Damian to grow and change.

Summary:  Nostaligic final issue until optional reboot changes nothing but changes everything!

I forget, was this one of the issues where the character wink at the end, to makes you feel like a tool for questioning the wisdom of the almighty DC reboot?

Funny how other books are telling stories they want to tell before their reassignment, whether it be superman or supergirl or powergirl or secret six or GCS, or the like.

But This book does nothing special.  I think that's a clue that you should not pick up any work by whatever these jokers (not in the good sense) have been reassigned to.

I like the issue because I think it does two things: alongside JLA #60 it closes out Dick's time as Batman and also ties all the Batman titles off until the reboot.

I have to say it was nice to remind readers of the whole history but also a tad sadistic; especially if certain aspects talked about in this issue no longer appear post-reboot.

Yes. Because the way to end one of DC's biggest series ever before the relaunch is to do a huge retrospect on the character WHO ISN'T THE TITULAR CHARACTER. It was a giant look at the ever changing role of ROBIN. Ugh. Such a terrible way to end BATMAN. #700 would've been a significantly better final issue than this drivel.
