Batman #7 - The Talons Strike!

5

Batman has faced the battle of his career and has been at the mercy of the Court of Owls. Is there any way he can return to safety? Well…he is Batman. Be prepared for a bunch of revelations and more questions.

Man oh man, Scott Snyder continues to keep us on the edge of our seats month after month. After the craziness of the last couple issues, when will Batman ever get a chance to catch his breath?

The Good

As usual, this issue is full of greatness. Rather than pick up immediately where the last issue left off, we get a little bit of a flashback. Obviously I won't describe what it contains but it is full of symbolism. Seeing this period of time should send a chill down your spine and how the flashback ends is like a punch in the gut.

The way issue #6 left off, you're probably asking yourself how the heck could Batman survive his encounter with the Talon and the Court of Owls. Batman underwent pure psychological torture for over a week and barely managed to keep his wits. This continues the tearing down of Batman by Snyder. We all know how much he loves the character but he's doing something you don't often see. When it comes to Batman, the joke is he can defeat anyone. Yes, he does and will survive against the Court of Owls but he just might need a tiny bit of help. Let it be noted that the person Snyder chose to be the one to help is extremely interesting.

In typical Snyder fashion, we do get some questions answered but plenty more arise. Even when offering revelations towards characters and situations, they leave us wondering what it all means in the big picture and you can't help but be sucked in further into the story.

It's simply amazing how many surprises Snyder can cram into one single issue. We should be used to it by now but turning each page offers something more. In reading each issue, I feel like a starving man devouring a gourmet meal. I simply have never been so pulled into a Batman story at this level in all my years of following the character.

For those wanting answers and revelations, there are some crazy ones in here. The great thing is seeing connections to other issues (and series!). Reading this makes it clear that Snyder has some gigantic master plan set in motion. We may not get all the answers to who and what the Court is but we do find out a bit about one of their key players. It's a great feeling knowing that there is plenty more to come.

There are so many emotions conveyed in this issue and Greg Capullo captures them all. We see shock and fear. Anger and bitterness after years of holding things back. Just when you think you've seen all the surprises this issue has in store for you, you turn the page to see yet another.

The Bad

If I had to try to dig out something that bothered me, it might have been a little bit of a speech that Dick gave. Other than that, of course it's a great issue.

The Verdict

Month after month Scott Snyder delivers an amazing issue of BATMAN. At the end, we're left in awe and start to wonder, is it possible for him to top this issue? The answer since the "New 52" started is 'yes.' Snyder has been unraveling an epic story. Reading each panel carefully gives the feeling as if there are layers and layers hidden beneath the surface. Each issue of BATMAN is what comic books are supposed to be about. The story exists on so many levels. You'll find yourself reading and re-reading each issue to make sure you don't miss any hidden clues. And then you'll find yourself re-reading the past issues once again to see that there were many clues in plain site. To make it all even better, Capullo attacks each page with his art. The worst part of this issue is it means we have to wait another whole month for the next issue.

Personally, I feel the review lays it on a little thick. Yes, the story is good. Yes, Batman is put through the ringer. But nothing I can't list off other characters having gone through worse. Wolverine, for example, goes through such psychological (and certainly physical) torture bi-weekly (though the stories are not of this calibre to be sure). All in all, while good and entertaining, it's another Batman story... and one he'll survive just fine and intact. I'm never left with an impression he won't.

Nothin' to do with the review and only a tiny thing really but did you know a group of owls is actually called a "parliament of owls"? Shame the court wasn't called the parliament :(

Wolverine and Batman are different people. Wolverine can get his limbs ripped off and come back unscathed, but Batman can't. Wolverine is also not known for getting too close to people, even though he too is mentally alone, Batman surrounds himself with people he cares about, but they are all possible targets. Wolverine doesn't mind killing people, Batman does. Wolverine is a reckless fighter, Batman isn't.

You see? Different people. Wolverine always comes out just fine every time, but I disagree when you say Batman does.

Indeed, easily the best of the New 52 along with Animal Man.

Great issue indeed. I do have one small complain: why does everything have to be conspiracy by a large secret organization? Can't a circus just be a circus? (and a mugging be a mugging)

And it does not even make sense. Why would The Court let Boss Zucco blackmail their training academy if it is powerful? And even if it did for some reason, why would it let Bruce Wayne adopt their Talon, Dick Grayson?

Oh please Tony, how much are being paid?

Spoilers ahead:

  • Why would Bruce just punch the tooth out of Dick? Quit trying to make him all dark and edgy. And even so how does he happen to knock the exact tooth out with the owl on it?
  • And how is Bruce even walking? He was stabbed, has multiple broken ribs, poisoned, been in freezing waters, without food and drink for days? Yet he manages to beat a Talon (Who he previously couldn't even touch) and do all this? Batman = Wolverine now?
  • Or how about the completely forced heavy handed metaphores at the start of each book, because thats clever right? (Sarcasm.) It's the exact same thing with American Vampire.
  • The Court happens to choose it's Talons from the circus, not just any Circus, Haley's Circus, the one circus in the world where Bruce adopts a child from, and they both happen to pick said child? This everything is connected crap is so contrived.

This series is so overrated.

I try not to get too overly excited about each month's issue, but every month I'm simply elated to read this title. This may be the best comic book buying/ reading experience I've ever had. Snyder's writing is awesome, and despite obvious clues, I was totally wrong about the Owls' insider connection to Bats. Capullo's opening artwork in this issue is fantastic. If I had any gripes, they would be purely cosmetic: last month's cover was hard to top, and Nguyen's variant offering this month looks as if it was done with watercolor pens from 4th grade. Otherwise, this issue is another quality offering from an already stellar mainstream series.

this story is just outstanding so far. I've been pretty much let down with the crappy crappy 52 revamp, but Batman is above and beyond just so great. Then agian, it wasn't really revamped was it. Just his suit. plus without spoiling anything, how bout that Grayson twist? just silly.

@HotSauceCommittee: I don't think comics are for you if you're gonna gripe about deus ex machina and heavy symbolism. If it had none of the things you described it would just be a goofy crime syndicate in bird costumes, and a Batman who's bedridden for months quietly pondering about an enemy that doesn't require that much scrutiny.

I know they are different characters. I wasn't attempting to compare the two on all too visceral a level TBH. But now that you mention it, a few things;

1. Wolverine cannot get 'his limbs ripped off'. Adamantium molecularly bonded and alla that.

2. Wolverine gets close to many people. Losing Mariko tore his heart out. Losing Silver Fox tore his heart out. Losing his best friend Kurt tore his heart out. Almost losing Jubilee to the Vampire nation saw him losing it. The list goes on and on. Wolverine cares a heck of a lot, and has shown more emotion with regards his teammates in the X-Men than I daresay Batman has ever shown his fellow teammates in the JLA. I don't think you know the character all that well. And Wolverine's ties to his 'sidekicks' are very nearly as strong as Bruce's own IMHO.

3. How does Wolverine's philosophy on killing differing from Bruce's, and him being a more reckless fighter have anything to do with my comment that Logan's been through the psychological ringer aplenty?

Bruce and Logan have their own baggage, distinct to each respective character to be sure, that wasn't my point. Bruce will survive just fine and I don't think the trauma and 'shock' factor of it all is as impactful as the reviewer lays it on to be. That is all.

On top of being a stellar issue, this issue also clearly brought out the potential usage of Mr. Freeze in the upcoming Annual issue... his role, both as a potential ally or a target of the owls was just massively upgraded...

Also, the real brilliance of this issue (along with Nightwing) was I feel like a secret veil that has been draped over Batman forever has finally been listed, exposing truths that were secretly there all along... while certainly not the actual case, that level of immersion and that feeling is what I absolutely adore in comics. It just rings with truth for me.

Batman #7 was awesome! A great transition between the Court's initial attack on Batman and their full-on war against the whole Bat-family. How is it possible that Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo get only better with each issue?

My thoughts exactly. Bruce punching Dick in the face to remove the tooth was completely unnecessary, especially with the notion of a back hand fist. I also didn't see the point in the symbolic nature of the predatory owl and it's prey, the bat; it was blatantly obvious from the start (pretty sure it was also mentioned in one of the previous issues). My biggest qualm about this issue was the revelation of how the Court of Owls were reanimating the bodies of their assassins. That made no sense to me. How can you bond a metallic alloy to one's cells by simply seeping it through your body via a deposit in one's tooth? Even then, it's not like you can just jump start a human being to life from death.
