Batman #27 - Zero Year: Dark City, Part Four

5

We're seeing Batman in his early days. Just because we know how he started doesn't mean we know everything that happened.

The Good

Zero Year is heading towards the end but you won't be able to think about that as you become immersed in this issue. Scott Snyder is laying out the story on different levels. It's crazy if you think about this being a sort of 'Batman origin' story yet we're seeing so much for the first time.

It's strange to see Batman at this point in his career. Last issue ended with the GCPD getting the drop on him and opening fire. Batman is supposed to be able to handle any situation. He's always prepared. But things do not go well for him at all. That's part of the glory with Zero Year - seeing the legend unfold.

Greg Capullo gets to draw Batman in a way we don't often get to see. The action gets intense and FCO Plascencia's colors will blow you away, as usual. Man, do I love that cover!

Those hungering for non-stop action might be a tad disappointed as we delve more into Jim Gordon's story. Trust me, it's worth slowing things down for this. We've seen Bruce's deep hatred for Gordon and we get the details here. Snyder's also been laying out other little mysteries as well and we get some answers to those as well. Last issue had some interesting moments, such as when we saw Bruce get a phone call. There's still some other little mysteries building as more on Tokyo is brought up.

The Bad

I mentioned the slowing down part in this issue. For me, it was an intriguing part of the story. It's building up the relationship and characters for Batman and Gordon. Others might not agree.

We'll have to wait an extra month to find out what happens after this issue's cliffhanger since BATMAN #28 will jump forward a bit to allow Capullo to work on the slightly oversized next chapter. (You can read more about that HERE).

The Verdict

This is Batman like you've never seen. We're used to Batman being prepared for anything and able to take on anyone. We all know Scott Snyder loves Batman but, man, he is giving him the beating of a lifetime. The whole Bat-team of Capullo, Miki and Plascencia are in top form, as usual. It's great getting a different kind of Batman story. There's plenty of mysteries being laid out and revealed. Reading Zero Year has been a blast.

The song at the beginning, is it a real song or something Syder wrote for the issue?

@dark_guyver: I think #29 is the end of the second chapter in Zero Year. It continues to issue #33 for the third chapter, I believe

I have to say #24 is the best issue of Zero Year so far, but this is definitely the best issue of Dark City so far!

This story arc blows don't know what everybody is flipping out about. It's main story line is nothing that hasn't been covered before they just throw a few characters in that weren't in the REAL origin

I really liked the sub-story about Barbara's dog. I'm not crazy about Zero Year as a whole, but Snyder's always got these little flourishes here and there that are nice to see.

They just keep making Batman comics exactly like I'd like someone to make Batman comics. Consistently high quality and great twists, and great scenes that anchor characters' characterization perfectly. I'm glad this looks like it will finally explain the flooded city scene from several issues ago.

This story continues to be my favorite. Seeing Batman in his first outings, seeing him interact with various characters for the first time is interesting. The opening conflict with the GCPD was great and seeing Batman so overpowered and caught off-guard is something we're not use to seeing and is very welcomed here. I also enjoyed the Gordon's back story was great and I'm glad to see some-what of the relationship between Batman and Gordon begin to develop into what we see in the present day.

Also, on a side-note, I liked the little nod to Year One with Gordon's eye-sight.

@g_man: Whoops, sorry about that Tony, I misread your review. I thought you wrote as you were disappointed with Jim Gordon's story and wanted more non-stop action. I probably got confused with this line, "Those hungering for non-stop action might be a tad disappointed". It's my mistake I read it wrong and probably skimmed too quickly. I actually agree with you not disagree. lol

@iceslick: dude, what are you talking about? I said the Gordon stuff was "intriguing." You say you disagree and liked it? I don't understand what you're trying to say.

@g_man: I disagree with you on Jim Gordon. I felt reading his side of the story was really good and gave great characterization in knowing who he is. Plus, it gives us a break from knowing Batman which I feel we know too much about him and get tired of it sometimes. So, it was good to have something different and learn about someone else than the usual.

@2cool4fun: 28 is skipping ahead 6 months from the current present day in DC comics. Think of 28 as a big spoiler for things to come. Batman 29 will finish the zero year arc.

Actually, April solicits say that Batman #30 is going to be the start of a new Zero Year story arc.

Man, the narration was really good in this one, especially Alfred's in take on the Bruce's recklessness.

@cobra88king8: Yeah, but the break is being done so that Capullo can catch up with his work. At least next months issue is gonna be important. We're finally gonna find out a little bit more on that blue, female Nightwing looking character.

I actually forgot this was coming out today (been pretty busy). Personally next month can't come sooner. An entire issue chock full of spoilers? Sounds like Christmas

My main problem with this issue is that next issue is going to really interrupt the flow of this story. It's at a point where it really doesn't need a break issue. But oh well I trust Snyder to know what he's doing

What do you mean by "batman #28 will just forward"? Is it going to be late 1 month...or?

It's going to be some sort of prequel story for Batman Eternal. I think.

My favorite parts of Zero Year have been anytime Batman is really in over his head. We don't see a lot of that and Snyder has been serving it up. I thought the GCPD had Bruce taken out serveral times in those first few pages.

The back story for Jim Gordon was great. I'd love a procedural police book starring Gordon.
