Batman #11 - My Brother's Keeper; The Fall of the House of Wayne, Conclusion

5

It's the end of the arc so does that mean this is the final battle? There were some serious revelations in the last issues and there might be some answers here.

"You're a lunatic in a bird suit...and I was done playing nice..."

The Good

Lincoln March made some serious allegations last issue. If true, they could completely change Batman and Bruce Wayne's world. We pick right up where last issue's cliffhanger ending left off. This is a major match up. Of course during this no holds barred fight, there's going to be some speech making. Despite all the cards being laid out on the table, there's that bit of doubt. You'll be hanging onto every word, waiting to see what the outcome could be. Of course there's the question of whether or not Bruce and Lincoln will survive. This is an intense fight. You also have to consider the fact that Lincoln took the Talon formula

The great part is hearing Lincoln's talk. The way he describes his story is poetic. The way Scott Snyder has him describe his upbringing and the symbolism is brilliant. This was an issue that I literally paused on each page because I didn't want it to end. Of course I was dying to see the outcome but part of me was almost sad to know the end was coming.

What can be said about Greg Capullo's art that hasn't already been said? I will mention that the battle between Bruce and Lincoln takes place across various locations in Gotham. It's great to see the little detail of familiar buildings. Batman takes a helluva beating and leave it to Capullo to capture every detail of it.

And then there's the conclusion to the back up story. Snyder, James Tynion IV and Rafael Albuquerque bring the events to end and fill in the gap with details of what happened back when Thomas and Martha were alive. It's a tragic ending but also is exactly what this entire arc needed.

The Bad

The 'villain' has to be able to give their revealing speech at some point. As well crafted as it is here, it's in the midst of a pretty hardcore fight. The fact that the fight takes them all over Gotham and even on a plane in the sky, I wonder how much of it Bruce was able to hear. Of course the beating Bruce takes and the scene with the plane and after were a bit much. I suppose the normal New 52 armor/suit Batman wears really absorbs a lot.

The Verdict

Now we can finally catch our breathe. It's been a crazy ride and the action and revelations really amped things up these last couple issues. Scott Snyder made a bold move with the direction of Lincoln March. I won't comment whether or not there's a clear and definitive conclusion to his claim but there is plenty to make the argument for both sides. There was also a touching scene between Bruce and Dick that plays out nicely. The two of them have been through a lot and we don't often see them able to simply talk. The conclusion to the back up story further sheds light on the past and brings about another touching scene. There is a grand feeling of closure despite certain questions still hanging in the air. If DC ever felt they needed to cancel BATMAN, this would be a fitting and appropriate way to end the series. But clearly that can and never should happen.

It's hard to say what's next for Batman. We know Snyder and Capullo have some insane plans brewing in the coming months. I do feel a little sad this arc is over. It's not so much that it's over but more so all the revelations and emotion contained here. That's just a testament to the writing ability of Snyder. It's not often I actually feel something after reading a comic. This was the ending I would have asked for.

This issue was an overall disappointment. I liked the art, I liked the fight....but the speech, and that ending was so disappointing

"Oh even if your brother lived, he wasn't truly your brother"

Really Alfred? Really?

I'm pretty sure that's been the end to so many different story arcs, and I'm surprised Snyder resorted to this....

OTOH the backup was pretty good, despite the cliched unfinished signature on letter thing.

First half of this issue was definitely a let down, but the stuff with Bruce & Dick/the backup was so great that it salvages this issue and keeps it worthy of 4 stars.

We never get to find out the true nature of the Court.

That was the point.

The reason Snyder bothered to show that Bruce as a child couldn't find any link between the Court and his parents's death was foreshadowing for that.

@JonesDeini: I agree, I was ok with the fight, I've seen better in Batman books, but the talk with Dick was great because Bruce really opened up, talked about Lincoln, his parents, Gotham and the court. It was Perfect writing IMO. Made me forget all about the fight lol

I really liked it, yah the plane part was probably the low point, but I love the fact that the mystery lives on about the court and bruce's "family issues". Dick and bruce little talk was amazing, overall great story

I was a little disappointed with this issue. I think specifically because I expected something shocking and definitive. However, I'm not all that upset. The first 10 issues were all outstanding, and although this one didn't really 'bring it home' for me, I can accept it. Simply because Snyder offered up so many new things into Batman's Gotham in this arc. We now have the Court of Owls, who will undoubtedly become a staple of Batman comics, games, and animated movies for years to come. And, the question of whether or not Lincoln March is truly who he says he is, is also a plot that can be revisited at anytime. Overall, Batman is, and has been my favorite DC book since the New 52 kicked off.

This issue was TERRIBLE. After all the build-up, it's the typical maniacal villain that is all talky-talky-talky-talky with an absolute disregard for physics (I know, in comics, we are expected to believe that a man can fly, but COME ON) during the fight scenes. The pacing was so bad I had to force myself to read this issue.

I expected a little bit more during the fight and more of the end, however, I did like it this issue since it left me knowing that there is more to come between these 2 characters and the court itself. This 11 first issues of Batman have been my favorite of the new 52 so far!

So now the "point" is to introduce villains and then off them before they get any sort of resolution.

Another thing that irritates me is that we never got to find out how good Owlman is,okay he can heal and his suit grants him flight capability but what else? all those knives, armor etc were for what exactly?

@Murrayc1968: Unfortunately, that's pretty much how I felt too. After all the buildup this seemed like a huge letdown. Also, March's pages long speech absolutely reeked of the "Zaaahaha! This is why I'm a villain!" feel to it which was highly disappointing.

@Owie: The ending with Grayson and Alfred was indeed the best way to wrap up this arc from an emotional standpoint.

Overall, I thought this issue was okay but it fell back on some very tired cliches that greatly took away from the gravity of the story for me.

First post to this site. Been reading comics for over 30 years, and I gotta say those of you who get hung up on things like, "His holding onto the plane was soo unrealistic...", really? You read comics for the realism?!?! Lol. Gimme a break. This Court of Owls arc is about as good as it gets in this medium. Art,writing, action, intrigue, mystery....it had it all. But realism? C'mon he is fighting adversaries who regenerate and basically cant die, they fall from buildings, get shot countless times, are hundreds of years old held in suspended animation, but we quible over Batman holding onto a jet turbine. Ooooook.

I thought this issue was a bit of a let down...having read issues 9-13 in one go, I thought the excitement I built up towards the finale wasn't fulfilling enough...
