Batman #11 - My Brother's Keeper; The Fall of the House of Wayne, Conclusion Review

5

It's the end of the arc so does that mean this is the final battle? There were some serious revelations in the last issues and there might be some answers here.

"You're a lunatic in a bird suit...and I was done playing nice..."

The Good

Lincoln March made some serious allegations last issue. If true, they could completely change Batman and Bruce Wayne's world. We pick right up where last issue's cliffhanger ending left off. This is a major match up. Of course during this no holds barred fight, there's going to be some speech making. Despite all the cards being laid out on the table, there's that bit of doubt. You'll be hanging onto every word, waiting to see what the outcome could be. Of course there's the question of whether or not Bruce and Lincoln will survive. This is an intense fight. You also have to consider the fact that Lincoln took the Talon formula

The great part is hearing Lincoln's talk. The way he describes his story is poetic. The way Scott Snyder has him describe his upbringing and the symbolism is brilliant. This was an issue that I literally paused on each page because I didn't want it to end. Of course I was dying to see the outcome but part of me was almost sad to know the end was coming.

What can be said about Greg Capullo's art that hasn't already been said? I will mention that the battle between Bruce and Lincoln takes place across various locations in Gotham. It's great to see the little detail of familiar buildings. Batman takes a helluva beating and leave it to Capullo to capture every detail of it.

And then there's the conclusion to the back up story. Snyder, James Tynion IV and Rafael Albuquerque bring the events to end and fill in the gap with details of what happened back when Thomas and Martha were alive. It's a tragic ending but also is exactly what this entire arc needed.

The Bad

The 'villain' has to be able to give their revealing speech at some point. As well crafted as it is here, it's in the midst of a pretty hardcore fight. The fact that the fight takes them all over Gotham and even on a plane in the sky, I wonder how much of it Bruce was able to hear. Of course the beating Bruce takes and the scene with the plane and after were a bit much. I suppose the normal New 52 armor/suit Batman wears really absorbs a lot.

The Verdict

Now we can finally catch our breathe. It's been a crazy ride and the action and revelations really amped things up these last couple issues. Scott Snyder made a bold move with the direction of Lincoln March. I won't comment whether or not there's a clear and definitive conclusion to his claim but there is plenty to make the argument for both sides. There was also a touching scene between Bruce and Dick that plays out nicely. The two of them have been through a lot and we don't often see them able to simply talk. The conclusion to the back up story further sheds light on the past and brings about another touching scene. There is a grand feeling of closure despite certain questions still hanging in the air. If DC ever felt they needed to cancel BATMAN, this would be a fitting and appropriate way to end the series. But clearly that can and never should happen.

It's hard to say what's next for Batman. We know Snyder and Capullo have some insane plans brewing in the coming months. I do feel a little sad this arc is over. It's not so much that it's over but more so all the revelations and emotion contained here. That's just a testament to the writing ability of Snyder. It's not often I actually feel something after reading a comic. This was the ending I would have asked for.

This was an awesome book! I cant wait to see Lincoln March/Thomas Wayne jr and the court of owls come back!

We all know from Arkham City Bruce uses audio enchancing devices built-into his suit :)

This is my favorite Batman story I've ever read. I loved every issue. Granted, I haven't read a ton of Batman so I don't have a ton of stories to compare it to, but none of them were even close to as entertaining as this arc.

The fight scene was waay to over the top for me, otherwise a great issue.

Edited by kingjoeg

The part where batman was hanging on to the airplane turbine was stupid, he wouldn't be able to hold on or hear a conversation at all. But apart from that I loved every single issue of this story, definatley one of the best batman stories i've read.

From start to finish the Court of Owls arc was awesome. Like others have stated some of the fight scenes were over the top but I didnt mind that at all. I really hope we havent seen the last of T-Wayne

the fight was stupid. and the ending uninspired. meh good enough batman story.

I loved first 10 issues, but this one didn't do it for me. I expected more.

Awesome!

I liked the issue overall and the arc was great. Had a few problems with this one. A few pictures I couldn't quite figure out what was happening and the end, even though it has some great dialogue, was a bit stagnant in terms of visuals. Still top-notch though. Can't wait until the Joker arc starts up in a few months.

Great issue the endgame OMG .

Would have prefered an actual fight between the Wayne bro's (if he even is a Wayne, wasn't really confirmed) but other than that it was great

Very Good Issue and Well Done conclusion to this incredible story.

I am sorry to say this just came full circle and is nothing but a copy of the Dr. Hurt thing, just less mind bending.

@kingjoeg: Nailed it.

@kingjoeg: @mathematicscore: Totally Agree.

That plane scene was too much. Batman cant hang inside a airplane engine the pull force is way bigger then Batmans strength.

Posted by Mokey

Of course Batman can hang inside of an airplane turbine while hearing March clearly! He's the gosh darn Batman!

I would recommend it but IMO batman and robin is better because it is more of a character driven book as apposed to an action book streamlined with big reveals.

I will take that into consideration. Thanks! :D

The fight is a bit exaggerated, but meh it's a Batmn comic, happens often.

Was beautiful in my opinion, very good, Bruce and Dick's talk was very touching, for first time on my life I was this close _ to cry when reading a comic.

Very well played Snyder, very well played. Now looking forward to the next.

PS: Ooooooh my dear God have I mentioned HOW AMAZING THIS COVER LOOKS?!? I could stay HOURS looking at how beautiful and well done is, both original and the combo pack one look awesome, for me it's on one word: Artgasm, it exist guys

Posted by rodiggle

Quality conclusion that leaves the doors wide open for a potential return of yet another amazing Batman rogue... guy has the best enemies

Loved this ending. Great story overall.

Posted by Mumbles

nice wrap-up. now, bring on the joker!

Posted by SpikeSpiegel

I really enjoyed this issue. Some might find it corny, but I enjoyed how the writing by Snyder at the end references the first issue about what Gotham is. Can't wait to see the Joker though!

GREAT story arc even if it did take almost a year to tell, but sometimes long stories are the best. Agreed on the turbine thing, but it's a comic so suspension of disbelief and all that. Best DC comic series since the reboot hands down.

wouldn't he had been left deaf from the sound of the jet engine?

Posted by ssj2DeadPool

@kingjoeg: That was the best part for me. It was so cool.

Posted by ssj2DeadPool

Some of these comments are why I don't like this site. "He cant hang on from being sucked into a jet engine." HE JUST DID. THEY JUST SHOWED HIM DOING IT. "Oh, but that is Plot Induced Stupidity, because, I , god of comic books say so. If you are a true believer, the comic is like a window into what happened. AND THAT JUST HAPPENED. deal with it.

Mediocre ending to a mediocre story, bring on the Joker.

The writer robbed the fans of virtually everything he introduced in to this story.

We never get to find out the true nature of the Court.

Lincoln may or get this MAY NOT be Bruce's brother, seriously WTF is this? I'm sick and tired of these half assed twists. If you introduce a concept atleast have the guts to get on with it,this is Jeph Loeb level story telling.

The fight between Owlman and Batman was very underwhelming,it was'nt a classic battle at all.

Posted by DraketheSlaughter

@Mokey: O__O that's really Stupid

Posted by longbowhunter

I felt the Dick and Bruce moments were the highlight of the issue. Too often Bruce brushes off his allies. It was good to see him open up to Dick a bit. I also like how the ending was left open. Keep the mystery going.

Edited by Danial79

Even if Batman had some gadgety way of holding on to the edge of the plane engine, he certainly wouldn't have the strength to climb out. This aspect completely took me out of the story, which is a shame because it's such a good story.

Posted by edge0076

Probably my favorite Batman story since Brubaker's run, but I really hated it that whether or not Owlman's really Bruce's brother is probably going to be one of the unresolved plot lines that go on forever.

@ssj2DeadPool: i dont like this site because of guys like you. you eat up anything they give you and praise it to the high heavens.

just read it and I really enjoyed it, this was my first Batman story arc, I remember when I picked up the first issue and seeing Lincoln March, and noticing how much he looked like Bruce thinking to myself this is just bad drawing on part of Capullo. But I guess you can't be a great artist without a couple of tricks up your sleeve.

You are the most negative person I've ever encountered on this website. Every single post you make is dripping with cynicism and pessimism. I mean, even your flipping avatar is negative and downcast.

Have you ever tried, you know, smiling?
Posted by KainScion

@RainEffect: have you read the issue? and i laugh and smile all day. so is tlj.

@KainScion: Irrespective of the quality of the issue, I've seen you frequently in many different threads consistently either belittling someone/something or just spreading contagious cynicism. Even skimming your profile page and seeing your forum history - 90% of your posts are negative.

It's your internet time, use it however the hell you want but just try to smile once. It is actually better for your physical health.

I am actually over critical of books. I buy almost 10 books a week. So It really burns me when I waste money on a bad book. I am not rich. So I appreciate when a book is consistently good. This Batman arc has been consistently GREAT. Maybe I should not have lashed out at the PIS people, but seeing Batman be dangled in front of a jet engine was so cool. It was a nice variation from hanging over a pit of acid. It was also an immediate threat to his life, in a way I have never seen before. So I thought it was awesome, and to hear someone just dismiss it as "impossible," really gets under my skin. Isnt that the point? That Batman can do things other men just cant? Ok Rant over.

Well, but there's such a thing as being just too much.  Batman can do others can't, but he can't do the things Superman can.  That the internal logic of comics.  Sometimes individual scenes or actions are just too hard to believe, even for comics, and they interrupt my suspension of disbelief.  It's the writer's job to suspend our disbelief and make us think something is real, by weaving a tale that makes sense from inside its internal world.  When something sticks out as being illogical within that world, it makes the world seem less real, and thus less affecting.  I thought that scene, and his overall beating, were a little too much, and they made it a little harder for me to stay completely immersed in the comic.

BUT this was a minor detail.  It was the best issue in this arc, and this arc has been great.  I thought it was a great fight (if overdone a little) and the end with Dick was a perfect emotional, social, human counterpoint to a harrowing, violent, often internally-psychological storyline.

@KainScion: okay fine. you hate marvel now as well as hating dc.
