Avengers World #3 Review

Shang-Chi fights the Gorgon in an all out brawl!

The Good

Shang-Chi knows Gorgon controls the hand on Madripoor, which is now on the head of a centuries old dragon, who is flying around Asia. Shang-Chi decodes to fight Gorgon, but has to keep his eyes closed the entire time because Gorgon's eyes can turn people to stone.

I'm finally understanding this book as a whole. At first, I wondered if we'd see any other Avengers, or if it would just be Shang-Chi, which is was. AVENGERS WORLD takes a hard focus, each issue, on a single branch of this very large team. I really enjoy how this book operates, and kudos for writers Nick Spencer and Jonathan Hickman for doing it this way. As the issues go on, I'm sure we'll see the larger picture of all of this, but for now, I'm really enjoying how each issue is playing out.

The issue long fight scene is pretty cool. It's paced extremely well for a martial arts comic and it isn't just non-stop kicks to the face. This issue is a chess match between two very strategic characters. It plays out extremely well, and it's a real back and forth battle.

On the artistic side of things, this book is pretty beautiful Stefano Caselli did the art with Frank Martin, Antonio Fabella, and Edgar Delgado on colors. This is one stellar team of artists that paint a breathtaking picture from page one, all the way to the end. Why so many colorists? Well, there are some flashback sequences within the issue which have a completely different color scheme than the rest of the book which works amazingly well here. This issue is a prime example of using multiple artists/colorists/inkers in an extremely effective way that not only makes sense to the story, but also enhances the reading experience for the person holding the book.

The Bad

The solicits don't lie. This was almost entirely a fight between Shang-Chi and Gorgon. Don't get us wrong, it's a ton of fun, but not much else happens overall. On top of that, Wolverine, Black Widow, and Falcon are with Shang-Chi but are no where to be seen aside from one panel in the opening page.

The Verdict

There's not too much you can say about the overall issue for AVENGERS WORLD #3, since it is one long fight scene. However, the issue really plays out nicely and it is a lot of fun to read. Hickman and Spencer, along with the great visual storytelling of Caselli, have put together a book that really compliments Hickman's AVENGERS run, while expanding into a new world that is pretty accessible to new readers.

If this is anywhere near a good as the Gorgon vs Phobos sword fight in Hickman's Secret Warriors I am all over it.

Good. Shang's good, but Gorgon? The dude's a freaking beast. It would take some serious plot for Chi to legitimately defeat Gorgon. Or Daredevil would have to make a cameo...

This was so awesome and I've never even cared or really known about Shang Chi before now. Avengers World is absolutely killing it so far; pretty much the only All New Marvel Now title that I think is consistently great imo.

He lasted for a while thanks to aforementioned serious plot, but eventually Gorgon got real and beat his ass.

Agreed. Still a good fight though.

@k4tzm4n:

What are the chances of this being in Best New Battles?

If it's as great as the solicitations say: very likely. I won't read it until later tonight, though.

Okay, I'm seriously confused as to the status of Madripoor in the Marvel Universe.

The issue had almost no point rather than the battle between the two and there was no point in the battle as well for me.It was just made for fun from Hickman and Spencer.Although the issue had great art and I am glad that Shang-Chi didn't actually win.

I told people anybody who fights the Gorgon dies He had killed wolverine before someone who has even a healing factor, He killed Phoebos the god of fear even he was a twelve years old god. olympian gods have a strength approximately 25 tonnes range for a normal olympian so a child can be around 10 tonnes he has match the boy in speed . Besides he is a mutant with healing factor so Shang Chi had no chance to beat him right now even Daredevil (who can never beat Shang chi no way), Batman will have their ass kicked. He fought Elektra and wolverine at the same time without any problems so we must applause Shang for his performance against the Gorgon who was even surprise to receive a severe beating at the beginning of the fight but somebody who has a healing factor is something else

This issue was amazing. I wish Marvel more often dedicated entire issues to fights like these, I read it so quickly, but loved every panel.

I didn't know Gorgon was that strong. He literally tossed Shang Chi quite a high distance casually.

I have never understood the appeal of Shang-Chi. He's always struck me as a relic from the 70s when Marvel was trying to cash in on the kung-fu craze. He might work as a street level guy beating up bank robbers, but when it comes to dealing with Thanos or incursions, "magic karate" seems pretty worthless.

@spacemanspiff85: How is he different from other non-super powered heroes? You could say the same about Hawkeye, Captain America, and perhaps the worst offender, Black Widow. None of them should be standing on the same earth as villains like Thanos or the builders.

But I do see Shang-Chi as a street leveler more than anything else. If it were up to me, he'd be teaming up with the likes of Moon Knight, Iron Fist and Daredevil, not out in space fighting alien robots with Thor and Iron Man.

Also, perhaps the idea for his character originally came from a desire to cash in on the martial arts craze of the 70s and 80s, but anyone who's actually read the original MoKF series would know he's much more than that. He's always been a Bruce Lee meets James Bond type of character, and as far as I'm aware, he's actually the only male Asian character to have had an ongoing that lasted for nearly a decade.

@geno:

Yeah, I agree with those other heroes, but they're ranged, for the most part. Or have ranged capabilities. With Shang-Chi, you'd think even the Vulture would be able to get the best of him in the right environment.

I had no idea who Shang-Chi is coming into this series and I really enjoyed this issue.
