Amazing X-Men #17 - The Once and Future Juggernaut Part Three of Four

The new Juggernaut is revealed!

The Good

The race to get the Gem of Cyttorak is in full effect as multiple parties want to become the next Juggernaut.

So this is the issue where we finally find out who is the new Juggernaut, which is something we wrote about the other day and something we are flat out spoiling today. However, we will not spoil in this review who ends up becoming the next Juggernaut. However, we can say that it's one exciting ride up to that point and there's a few moments that will have readers on the edge of their seats.

Writer Chris Yost really does pull at reader's heart-strings here as certain people come closer and closer to grabbing the gem, but in the end, the person who does become the next Juggernaut was completely out of left field and a fantastic twist for the story. Again, we're keeping you in the dark, but what we can say is that Yost is bringing back a character fans haven't seen a lot of and all-in-all, it makes a lot of sense to have this person be a part of this because they do have a big prior connection to the X-Men and they fit what Cyttorak wants in an avatar.

This story and particularly this issue were really big for bringing Cain Marko back into comic books, since he's spent quite a bit of time gardening instead of punching things. Cain takes some of his anger out on Iceman, since he things the X-Men killed his half-brother, Charles Xavier. Cain gets a little bit of relief in knowing that it wasn't the X-Men that killed Charles, but just Scott Summers. Hopefully, that means we're going to see those two battle is out in upcoming months.

The best moment in this issue is the face-off between Cain Marko and Colossus. To the reader, it seems like both of them are their to get the power back, but they slowly come to realize that they're both actually there to destroy it. It's a fantastic scene seeing these two guys fight each other, although not extremely believable since Colossus has super-strength and Cain does not. Regardless, that moment where they both realize what is happening and when it seems like they're on the same side is pretty awesome.

The Bad

Once again, I'm a bit split on Jorge Fornés. There are times where his art work looks fantastic in this issue, especially on that final page, but there are times where things get a little rough, like the fight between Colossus and Cain. After three issues, I've come to realize that I just don't like how Fornes draws Colossus. He comes off as a bit too cartoony compared to everyone else in the book. Maybe Colossus needs a new costume as well, considering he sticks out like a sore thumb compared to most everyone else's looks here, except for Firestar, whose costume also looks awful and dated.

The Verdict

AMAZING X-MEN flips the script on readers and leaves them with a fantastic ending. "The Once and Future Juggernaut" has been, thus far, a really great story line that on the surface is the fun race to grab a gem, but aside from that, it's a lot about Cain Marko trying to redeem himself and fight for his family, in a sense. Yost does a great job with Marko in every aspect, except for the fast he got rid of Cain's beard. This has been one of the best stories in this volume and I highly recommend checking it out.
