Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business #1 - OGN

5

Really? A Spider-Man story where Peter Parker has a sister? It's worth checking out.

The Good

What's the first thing you thought of when you heard Peter Parker had a long-lost sister? Chances are you were a little skeptical, as I was. Still, with Mark Waid and James Robinson writing and Gabriele Dell'Otto doing the painted art and the nice hardcover format, how could I resist?

As a really big Spider-Man fan, I'm open to stories with big shaking changes, provided they're told well. Just as I wasn't irate over Doc Ock [temporarily] taking over Spider-Man's body, I'm also okay with the possibility of Peter having a long-lost sister. What makes it work is the way Waid and Robinson present her. Teresa Parker is a fascinating character. I immediately fell for the character. Her backstory made perfect sense. Is it at all cliche? Given the profession Richard and Mary Parker were in, you can easily think of many reasons to explain the possibility of her existence.

As a stand alone story, Waid and Robinson go all out. This is a big grand adventure for Peter and Spider-Man. The globetrotting feel adds a new level of excitement compared to the typical stories of Spider-Man simply swinging around New York City. The more you see of Peter and Teresa together, the more you'll find yourself coming around to the idea of a Parker sibling.

Werther Dell'Edera provides the pencils and Gabriele Dell'Otto's handles the colored art. This adds to the big feel of the story. It's a gorgeous story, both inside and out. We see the Parkers travel to many locations and even get to see Spider-Man wearing a certain other familiar costume. The action scenes are glorious. This is definitely a book I'll be reading again.

The Bad

There are the obvious questions of continuity. Some things are cleaned up too neatly. At the end of the day, those things don't and shouldn't matter. We get a fascinating story that opens the door to interesting possibilities. You may see certain things coming but you'll find yourself enjoying the story immensely.

The Verdict

I didn't think I was going to like this story. I didn't think it would matter or be important. I was wrong. Clearly the creative team had a huge influence on my decision to buy this without having any idea what we would get. Waid, Robinson, and Dell'Otto take us away on an incredible adventure full of action, intrigue, mystery, and even espionage. It's definitely a different kind of Spider-Man story and that's part of what I enjoyed so much. I did roll my eyes over the idea of Peter Parker having a long-lost sister but Waid and Robinson showed me it could be a great thing. Does this fit into regular continuity? Could it fit in? I absolutely hope so. This is a highly enjoyable stand alone Spider-Man story unlike what you're used to.

There was a novel called "Secret of the Sinister Six" where Spidey had a long lost sister. I wonder if that was an inspiration for this

My issue with Peter having a sister is it retroactively hurts Uncle Ben and Aunt May. I don't believe for a second that the two saints that they are would not take in both Peter and his sister once they were orphaned. Granted, if she is some sort of super secret spy baby then it could be that Ben and May just didn't know about her.

Loved it. Spider-Man works greatly in graphic novel format, I would read more graphic novels starring spidey.

This story was Spider-Man/Peter Parker to the core. Great read.

It was a trilogy wriiten by Adam-Troy Castro

01 Spider Man: Gathering of the Sinister Six

Synopsis

Spider-Man matches wits with a new gathering of the Sinister Six--the Chameleon, Dr. Octopus, the Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, and Pit--that has targeted the cast and crew of a new movie in which Spider-Man's wife, Mary Jane, has a featured role.

From the Author - Author Comments

Although the Sinister Six will be battering Spider-Man across the New York City landscape throughout all three books in this trilogy -- and though the main bad guy in this first instalment is Quentin Beck aka Mysterio -- the real antagonist to watch is a certain arrogant old man who checks into the Plaza Hotel in the Prologue to Book One. He's called the Gentleman, and he is NOT a nice guy, and there's a shocking secret reason for his murderous vendetta against Spider-Man. Just wait 'til you find out (hee hee hee)...

02 Spider-man: Secret of the Sinister Six

Synopsis

Spider-Man battles the most dangerous Sinister Six line-up ever: Doctor Octopus, Electro, Mysterio, the Vulture, the tragic but deadly Pity, and the group's mysterious leader, the Gentleman - a villain who had a hand in the deaths of Spider-Man's parents! But what neither Spider-Man nor his enemies know is that the Gentleman is about to set his master plan into motion: destroying all the financial markets in the world and make himself the richest man in the world. As for the villainess Pity, Spider-Man has become convinced that she is his long-lost sister. But to get Pity to reject her life of crime and break free of the Gentleman's control, he needs conclusive proof - proof that only the X-Man known as Wolverine has. But time is running out for Spider-Man, for Pity, and for the world.

03 Spiderman: Revenge of the Sinister Six

Synopsis

As the amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker has had to endure many shocks in his life: The death of his uncle Ben?shot by a burglar years ago, when Peter might have been able to stop the killing. The loss of his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, who perished at the hands of his deadliest enemy, the Green Goblin. The realization that his wife, Mary Jane Watson, knew his secret identity years before he finally revealed it to her. But nothing could have ever prepared him for the latest unexpected turn in his life: the possibility that he has a long-lost sister!

The revelation of a sibling he didn?t even know existed is far from the only complication to the matter. For not only is his sister a deadly super-villainess known as Pity, but she?s working alongside the manipulative Gentleman?a man who masterminded the deaths of Peter?s parents! Together with Doctor Octopus, Electro, the Vulture, and Mysterio, the Gentleman and Pity have formed the newest incarnation of The Sinister Six? a group dedicated to destroying Spider-Man!

Faced with the challenge of trying to save Pity from her predicament while, at the same time, stopping The Sinister Six from carrying out the Gentleman?s world-threatening plans, Spider-Man must turn to the super-spy organization S.A.F.E. and its volatile director, Colonel Sean Morgan, for help. But even with help from his hi-tech allies, Spider-Man discovers that nothing he can do will stop the Sinister Six from achieving their goal of revenge!

@teerack: The ending I hoped would happen in a book called Spider-man: Revenge of the Sinister Six with a similar concept to this comic. He revealed that Pity the brain washed bad guy that Peter thought was his sister was not his sister, she was just an orphaned girl and the whole thing was a mind game by The Gentleman.

Good story and gorgeous art.

Not sold on how Waid writes Peter at times. Like at the end, when he thinks Kingpin is dead, he says something harsh to the effect of "good riddance I wouldn't want my identity compromised" (in any case, don't all supers know explosions and no body mean the bad guy is still alive?), and at the beginning it's like a fake inversion of Parker luck by saying "I DO have money right now, but I'm stupid to pay bills anyway, screwing up everyday is relatable! hurr durr" (maybe I'm just biased considering Waid's "Spider-Man has to be a perpetual loser" unfortunate comment from some time ago). Peter's identity mindwipe bit at the end pissed me off for a moment, but then I realized it's probably the best hope for this to become canon. Teresa is a cool character and the bond between siblings reads honest and touching, even better that Peter still cared for her after she was "revealed" as a fake. Overall a cool read and worthy of being included in 616.

@8008s: i agree with some of your statements. that first reveal towards end and the minwipe ticked me off but those last two pages pretty much made up for it. for me its all about the art and monaco scenes. LOVE capers and this was very bond-esque. hope we get to see teressa in the marvel 616 next year sometime with peter coming back this year (he's going to be busy) and with what they said about the spider that bit him being around still...

that is why i was excited for this story. we could have a spiderwoman/girl in the 616 that is a parker and i hope it comes true one day.

I am wondering if the big reveal is another fake-out ? I mean the epilogue definitely shows Mary might have another child but is it actually Teresa ? If it is her, than it must be quite the coincidence for Kingping to find and manipulate her without knowing. If it is not .. is it just a red herring ? Because that CIA controller guy at the epilogue surely found something interesting.
