All-New X-Men #7

5

Young Cyclops meets Mystique after young Scott has a trip to the bank.

The Good

I've made it pretty clear, in the past, that I'm not the biggest X-Men fan. I read here and there, but I usually get annoyed and drop off after a few issues. It's just not my favorite thing in the world. This X-book is the first time, in years, that I'm excited to read. I've even put it on the Top of Pile list a few times, as well as my real life pull list. This is a fantastic book to get new X-readers on board.

This issue made me extremely happy. It was like a snuggie wrapped in friendship wrapped in cuddling. It's an incredibly awesome issue about learning what you become and the directions in life you can take. It's also a great issue about manipulating the heck out of people as young Scott has a talk with Mystique about Scott's perceptions of what Wolverine's school is all about.

I really enjoyed the opening to this issue. Young Scott hanging out in the real world and going to the bank was a very cool scene, especially when he discovered a few of the things in his lockbox. Cut to a few moments later, and Wolverine has to pull out the old Avengers "Members card" to keep some guards at bay in a pretty comical moment. Wolverine works well as this bizarre babysitter at the end of the issue. It's a pretty weird dynamic that I'm really enjoying in this series.

David Marquez does a stellar job on art here with Marte Gracia on colors. The scenes with young Scott looking at his lock box were not only drawn well, but they had a great tone, colorwise, to them. Marquez is not only a fantastic artist, but he remains consistent throughout the whole issue. He's fantastic with facial expressions without going over the top.

Great reveal page at the end of the issue. I like seeing the young X-Men discover new things about their future and their reactions to it. Their futures are pretty insane and piece by piece their learning a bit more about how crazy their lives will become and the way they handle it is the most interesting aspect of this book to me.

The Bad

I loved this issue, and while I hate saying "I had no problems with this issue..." I had no problems with this issue.

Wait... no... I have one. I want to see Angel and Archangel go flying.

The Verdict

ALL NEW X-MEN is one of my favorite on-going series here, and I'm not even a big X-Men fan. This issue was especially fantastic as young Scott has a talk with Mystique about his future. I loved the dialogue between the two. The art is always top notch when it comes to Marquez and Marte as well. This is a series you're going to want to read and not just because of the gimmicky story. It's just that darn good.

Overall, I highly recommend this issue.

@Kerrigan: Wow I never thought about Wolverine realizing young Scott was with Mystique good catch. The issue was pretty good; theres only so many characters you can focus on in one book I just want a little bit more action.

This is a good series so far, Bendis is handling the X-kids pretty well, although I hope it's not going to be all Scott and Jean. I like the base concept of the book, let's you refresh the characters without the kind of frantic universe rewrites DC keeps trying.

On a pedantic note, I'm pretty sure Wolvie would have smelled Mystique on baby Scott: it's well within what he's been shown to be capable of, and it's not like he's unfamiliar with her scent. But whatever. Still fun.

Love this series! It's one of the few Marvel Now titles that I'm continually excited to read issue to issue.

This bringing the "old" x men to the future plot has turned out to be a brilliant move on Bendis' part. It's a great way to celebrate and reflect on everything that has happened in the past 50 years in X men comics.

Can't get enough!

Really enjoyable. I find myself smiling the whole time I'm reading the issue. As a Cyclops fan, I just really enjoy young Cyclops, and I am even enjoying old Cyclops, who I haven't liked for some time. I think this series may be the way for old Cyclops to become a little bit more of a sympathetic character again.

what I don't get is, Wolverine just dealt with Mystique in a pretty shitty way over in Uncanny X-Force. The death of Daken, and Sabertooth has been banging Mystique. He mentioned how he's still doing it in Wolverine and the X-Men.

I found the persona Mystique was putting on in front of Cyclops so much more interesting than how she actually is.

@TEGCRocco: i think there's a chance that wolverine may be the rational mind that fixes everything...he's starting to appear more like a father figure to young scott. was cute/fitting to see young scott walking around in his jacket at the start of this issue.

Yeah, this is kind of the reason why you're enjoying it.

X-Men fans (those with an IQ in triple digits) should realize how pitiful, lazy and offensive this series is.

That and my IQ is 46.

I love these guys who think it's ok to insult people that like something that they don't....it certainly doesn't make me think that they're all a bunch of douchebags with small genitals

@tximinoman: Well Jean wasn't exactly the saint that people believe she was. Also, Scott didn't just "cheat" on Jean. He actually kept his integrity when Emma offered to get physical with him. Apocalypse messed up his mind, that is what completely changed Scott's personality, in addition to Jean becoming more and more distant to him due to the returning Phoenix force. Only after Jean willing him to move on with Emma did he move on with her.

Also, the previous marriage that got ruined, well, he was manipulated by sinister into marrying a clone of Jean. Madelyn was programmed by Sinister to telepathically make Scott think he was in love with her. So that Nathan could be born.

You gotto look at it from both sides, Scott isn't the scumbag he is portrayed to be by the Cyclops-haters. Actually the poor guy has suffered the most out of all the X-Men, but he still has the sheer toughness of will to keep going even after all that.

I agree. Mystique has always been good at deception, and especially on a young, uneducated mind like Scott's, it is easy to believe that young Cyclops may snap and have a major blowout with not only current Cyclops, but maybe Wolverine too.

So far in this series I've been under the impression that the O5 were brought back to change cyclops' ways. This is the first time, to my knowledge, that there's been reference to killing modern cyclops. Is this just Mystique playing her usual games? Or do you think it'll start to become a more prominent objective?

I also agree with pacing being a little too slow in this series. This issue, in particular, spent too much time with character development and there was no action - unless you count Kitty going Bruce Lee on young Bobby. I do think the writer is doing a great job with dialogue. It seems natural and not too stiff or forced. And there was plenty of tension. So that's good. But yeah, so far it's been all potatoes and no meat.

I'll give this series a few more issues before I put it down for good. I see a lot of promise here but so far, it has yet to deliver. Hopefully that changes soon. I do find it far superior to Wolverine and the X-Man, which also had a lot of promise with the newest class of mutants, but it's just become too campy and hokey for me to want to continue reading.

I really feel bad for Young Scott. I don't mind when people heavily criticize Older Scott both in real life and in the comic universe but man I truly feel bad that Young Scott has to deal with this.

Yeah I hope Young Scott & Jean get back together without going through all the crap that ruined the relationship in the first place. Although it would have been really funny if Jean said something shitty to Scott again and he answered with an Optic blast to the face.

And I really cannot wait for Scott to blast the shit out of Beast. The current X-Men should stop worshipping saint Jean and think for a minute, if they really mess young Scott up, it's gonna totally destroy all the history that they know.

In my opinion Jean's reaction was the reaction any other normal girl would have had if they found out that her boyfriend is going to cheat on her. Yes, Scott hasn't done anything yet... but he will. Knowing that will be enough for any woman to get mad, but if that wasn't enough, she learned it after learning that she's dead and how and why she died (and also, because of she learned that through Beast's memories she probably learned how Scott didn't mourn over her death -not even a single day- before jumping on Emma's arms).

Women are crazy, I thought that was a really normal reaction.

Pace of the story is pretty slow, maybe Bendis is developing each characters slowly. This issue was really nice, thrilled on whats mystique's plan on the young x-men. And the scene of Kitty and iceman, that was really funny...and poor young scott, he's carrying all the burden of what old cyclops did.

This is definitely a must read!

and wth is with the first commenter, if you don't like it then DON'T read it.

I'm disappointed a lot of writers have such a two-dimensional impression of Mystique. I hated this line....

"The esteemed Dr. Henry Mccoy dropped a bomb on the mutant race. I just lit the fuse. Screw them all"

...Mystique, from her very first appearance, has been ALL about mutant rights or mutant superiority. The writers lately have completely skewered her sense of purpose and reduced her to just a vengeance fiend. It's a real shame. Why do they hate Mystique so much?

I started reading comics with the X-Men. Claremont days. Legendary days. I've been jumping on and off for years, but I haven't been more happy with the X titles then I am now. Uncanny X-force blew me away, Wolverine and the X-Men is outstanding, and what Bendis is doing is great. Bendis name is so big now people hate him just to hate him. I hope they finally get him now. How good he is, how good his dialogue is, and they don't even now how intricate he actually is with simplicity. They'll soon fing out. They'll see why he lasted as long as he did on the Avengers. Why he's the pretty much the only reason the Ultimate Universe came back from the dead and is rising again. I can't wait for future books, and Marvel was genious in how they've been blasting out new books as quick as they have been so people can get a broader look at things, and not give up after only a couple books. So happy.

this is a very character centric series...it reminds me a lot of Ultimate Spider-man in that there's not a lot of action going on but there's tons of relationship build up and emotional moments...just like Spider-men as well...this is the type of writing that Bendis excels at

I will admit that Bendis's run on the Avengers books wasn't that great...it started out good with the first few arcs of New Avengers but it got pretty stagnant after that....I think if you want to read Bendis's best stuff you should read Ultimate Spider-man, the Spider-men mini, and this

This was alright, but I kinda feel like the pacing is too slow for me. At the same time, if it went any faster, the story would to be too rushed and we wouldn't really be able to feel the emotions of each moment. These last two issues really didn't seem worth buying to me.

Yeah I really enjoyed this issue as well. This was a solid character development issue, for both Young Scott and the relationships between Scott and the rest of the world. Loved the part with Kitty and Young Iceman, funny stuff. Really solid issue, dont know what that first commenter is talking about.
