The Good
When you open up the issue to the first page it begs the question, "you're buying a book where babies fight babies, what does that say about you?" Well, it must say a lot about me actually because this is a book I was really looking forward to. I mean, it's great to read an action-packed superhero book, but sometimes it's good to read a book about babies. Scottie Young brings these babies to life with the help of artist Gurihiru, who is perfect for the issue. His art is cartoony, and really captures the lightheartedness and the fun of the comic.
What happens when Cyclops steals Steve Rogers' Bucky Bear? You guessed it! The Avengers babies assemble to retrieve Steve's Bucky Bear, and what we get is a cleverly written, entertaining story for kids of all ages.
The highlight of the issue (at least for me) were the moments featuring Wolverine. I think he's not only the most adorable of the little babies, but his appearance was the most interesting. Now, this comic isn't thought provoking. It doesn't have these incredible characterizations of characters and interactions that you will find really incredible, but it is a lot of fun to read. Isn't that what comics are all about?
The Bad
Of course if you're looking for depth, you're not going to find that here. I think it would have been neat to see younger X-Men and Avengers characters that we saw make an appearance in the AVENGERS VS. X-MEN, but that's okay. Some of the lines were a little bit cheesy, too, and felt a little bit rushed, but in the heat of battle, maybe that's the whole point. Still, it would have been nice to see moments fleshed out a bit longer.
The Verdict
Overall, if you have a kid that you would like to introduce Marvel characters to then this is a great introduction. It's a family friendly book that is a great read for all ages. I love the way Young alludes certain things that are actually happening in present day comics (like Black Panther and Storm holding hands, for example). This comic is a lot of fun and is definitely worth the money if you're looking for a cute, well drawn one-shot to spend your money on this week.
