A-Babies vs. X-Babies #1 - Marvelous Meadows

4

Basically, Marvel characters as babies find reasons not to get along. Who wouldn't want to read about that?

The Good

When you open up the issue to the first page it begs the question, "you're buying a book where babies fight babies, what does that say about you?" Well, it must say a lot about me actually because this is a book I was really looking forward to. I mean, it's great to read an action-packed superhero book, but sometimes it's good to read a book about babies. Scottie Young brings these babies to life with the help of artist Gurihiru, who is perfect for the issue. His art is cartoony, and really captures the lightheartedness and the fun of the comic.

What happens when Cyclops steals Steve Rogers' Bucky Bear? You guessed it! The Avengers babies assemble to retrieve Steve's Bucky Bear, and what we get is a cleverly written, entertaining story for kids of all ages.

The highlight of the issue (at least for me) were the moments featuring Wolverine. I think he's not only the most adorable of the little babies, but his appearance was the most interesting. Now, this comic isn't thought provoking. It doesn't have these incredible characterizations of characters and interactions that you will find really incredible, but it is a lot of fun to read. Isn't that what comics are all about?

The Bad

Of course if you're looking for depth, you're not going to find that here. I think it would have been neat to see younger X-Men and Avengers characters that we saw make an appearance in the AVENGERS VS. X-MEN, but that's okay. Some of the lines were a little bit cheesy, too, and felt a little bit rushed, but in the heat of battle, maybe that's the whole point. Still, it would have been nice to see moments fleshed out a bit longer.

The Verdict

Overall, if you have a kid that you would like to introduce Marvel characters to then this is a great introduction. It's a family friendly book that is a great read for all ages. I love the way Young alludes certain things that are actually happening in present day comics (like Black Panther and Storm holding hands, for example). This comic is a lot of fun and is definitely worth the money if you're looking for a cute, well drawn one-shot to spend your money on this week.

I loved it. I just wished the art on the inside was the same as the cover art. I would have bought this just for the cover lol

Didn't know this existed, now I gotta pick it up, I am a sucker for comedy starring Superheros I wish more action comedy books were put out.

Also the art looks adorable and who doesn't love cute little baby hero's.

critical on a funny , not serious one shot, yet 5-star rating for the first issue of a not all that interesting punisher mini after the apparently not all that interesting series got cancelled. nice. lol

If you're expecting depth in a book about babies with superpowers fighting each other, you're reading the wrong book

How does storm and BB holding hands replay things that are happening in the real world? Their marriage was annuled in AVX. If anything it would be more symbolic to see them wanting to fight each other from the get go or them being mean to each other from the get go.

I agree. The teenage heroes are massively overlooked. Then again, it's telling that Marvel is killing off most of them in Arena. >:(

This was very cute but I don't think kids will read it. Animated series is the only thing these kids seem to understand.

If this cover doesn't make the list of best covers this week, then there has been a grave injustice in the world.

I normally despise when Marvel or DC create endless spin-off or side issues to big events. THIS is just awesome. This reminds me of what they made a spin-off of NARUTO called ROCK LEE AND HIS NINJA PALS. It was based on the original series, but it was just goofy fun. It just takes the characters you love and does something fun with them.

These should just be about fun and a few laughs. This is a trend I could get behind. Just as long as the writing is solid. Taking your big events and ending it with a parody of what happened.
