    Jane, stop this crazy thing!

I really wanted to give this book a chance to impress me. Based on the glowing recommendations by my local shop owner, I picked up the last few issues of this book and I was thrilled with the first and second issues, but there were warning signs on issue three and by this one, I may not pick up #5. Let me start by saying that this is not a bad comic, It just seems that Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett aren't sure where they're going with this book. They started with a very Animal Man/Swamp Thing feel for the first two issues where it focused mainly on suspense and a growing supernatural menace but suddenly things got very silly very quickly. First off, this issue uses technobabble as dialogue for a good five pages, that's lazy writing and a cheap way to introduce concepts that the creators haven't really thought about in detail. The Transhuman is not a bad concept, an aging supervillain in a retirement home eager for action is a great idea, just here it seems like a one-off joke that Abnett and Lanning ran with too far. The supernatural aspects work fine too, but shoving them back into the story when it seems convinient isn't helping the pacing any. It seems like the pair are throwing things at the reader and hoping at least something will stick. One thing I noticed too is the gratutious panty shots and the lack of any attention given to them by the feminists. Guess that says a lot about this book's sales numbers...

The Good: There's a pretty interesting perspective on the cover. It doesn't completely work, but it doesn't fail as much as the previous two covers. The artwork is great, as usual, and I have a lot to say about it, but for starters, the first page has an absolutely excellent establishing shot. Once again though, it's very similar to the actual cover, just infinitely more interesting and artistic.Once again, the action in this issue is seriously awesome. The panel layouts are just a bit chaotic i...
