History

During No Man’s Land, Renee befriends Two-Face. She is able to surface the good Harvey Dent personality to help aid the city after the earthquake. Two-Face would eventually fall in love with Renee while they help the people of Gotham.

Renee did not love Two-Face back and he thought the only way to have her was to take everything away from her. Two-Face reveals to the public that Renee is a lesbian and he frames her for murder. Renee is taken in by the police and held in jail pending her trail. Two-Face would proceed to kidnap her and made it look like Renee escaped. Renee and Two-Face would get into a fight and they both struggle for the gun Two-Face is holding. Batman comes to save her and clears her of the murder and returns Two-Face to Arkham Asylum. Renee’s life would take a spiral downwards though, her parents were very religious so in response to her sexuality, they disowned her.

During War Games, Montoya and Crispus Allen were ambushed by the Black Spider and her partner shoots and kills him. Jim Corrigan stole the bullet used to shoot Black Spider during the crime scene investigation and tries to sell it on the Internet. Montoya needed the bullet to prove Allen only killed in self-defense. Renee was able to buy the bullet and clears the name of Allen. Renee becomes obsessed with trying to expose Corrigan that Allen decides to bring him to justice to stop Renee’s obsession. Allen is killed by Corrigan during the investigation and it fueled Renee even more to bring Corrigan in. She is able to track him down and has him in front of her gun. In the end Renee could not kill him and she quits the GCPD right afterwards.

Renee has become an alcoholic drinking at bars. She has started to obsess over her former job and losing her girlfriend. The Question would hire her to help him investigate Intergang and find out what they are planning to do in Gotham City. They uncover alien like weapons at their warehouse and tracked them to Kahndaq. During the wedding of Black Adam there was a child girl strapped with bombs ready to do a suicide bombing. Renee stops her with the only way possible which is shooting the girl and killed her. Black Adam would award the Question and Renee with the highest honor in Kahdaq, but Renee did not attend. Black Adam finds Renee in bed with another woman drinking her guilt away. Later Renee and Question find Intergang and discovers they are using children to operate things.

Renee would be taken to Nanda Parbat by Question. He introduces her to Richard Dragon who would train Renee. She discovers that Question has cancer and is dying, the Question wants Renee to replace him. They discover that Intergang is reading about prophecies that involved sacrificing Batwoman. Batwoman is Katherine Kane who is Renee’s ex-girlfriend. They return to Gotham to help her fight against Intergang. The Question became weaker and weaker by the day and eventually he had to be hospitalized at Kane’s. Renee began to act more the Question day after day and she would stay by his side while he was ill. Renee and Kate seem to have rekindled when they celebrated Hanukkah and Christmas while also kissing each other. Renee would decide to take Question back to Nanda Parbat in hopes they could help him. The journey was long and difficult due to blizzards. They get nearer to the city and Question finally awakens to tell Renee one last thing, that she needs to figure out who she will become. Question dies shortly after and Renee continues to the city. Renee would meditate for a long time until she finally returned to Gotham. Upon her return she discovers that Batwoman was kidnapped already and she teams up with Nightwing to try and save her. Eventually Renee would figure herself out and she becomes the new Question.

Now wearing Charlie’s (the former Question) mask and acting as the Question, she continues to investigate the kidnap. She discovers where they were going to perform the ritual and she busts in to stop them. Kate is stabbed for the ritual by Bruno and Renee jumps him, while Bruno was distracted Kate pulls out the knife and throws it at Bruno killing him. Kate later recovers. Renee puts up the question signal in the sky, shining through the window into the room in which Kate is recovering. Kate knows what it means. Renee is asking. "Are you ready?"

The Crime Bible

As the new Question, Renee became obsessed with finding answers about the Crime Bible and its Religion of Crime. With every piece of information she found, she came to also find something seductive about the dark religion's teachings. Kate saw the effect her investigation was having on her. When Kate helped her get a rare copy of the Crime Bible, the two lovers came to blows over it, because Kate did not want to give it to Renee. But Renee had to have it and told Kate why. It was because she had to know as much as she could about them so she could protect Kate from them. That answer was not good enough for Kate. She never asked to be protected. But she did leave Renee with the copy of the Crime Bible.

All the time Renee was investigating the Religion of Crime, she was also chasing a man called Flay, leader of the religion's Order of the Stone. What she did not realize was that he was making sure she learned the Crime Bible's lessons of blood, because she was part of the prophesied Parable of the Faceless. When it was time, he threatened to murder all those she cared about if she did not come to meet him. She of course complied. He forced her into a death match with him and said whoever survived would lead the order. She was able to maintain the upper hand over him but continued to refuse to kill him. She had no interest in being part of their faith. He would not surrender though. Soon, she had no choice but to inadvertently kill him. The Order of the Stone then bowed before their new master.

Final Crisis

Renee refused the Order of the Stone and learned from their religions prophecies and agendas details of the coming Final Crisis.  She passed information along to Dan Turpin about a missing children case he was working, because it tied into what she knew about the Dark Side Club targeting metahuman kids. Leaving him to that, she took off after the Order of the Stone's attempt to acquire the Spear of Destiny. She failed to keep them from it due to the Spectre's interference. But it wasn't simply the Spectre. It was her dead partner Crispus Allen, the new host to the Spectre, who had been sent to kill her for being the leader of the Order of the Stone. He allowed her a final kindness, transporting her back to Gotham so she could see Kate one last time. Before her divine execution could be carried around, the Radiant appeared and granted her God's mercy.

But this happened just as Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation was spreading through the world. Renee, Crispus and the Radiant were attacked by members of the GCPD, now under Darkseid's control. Since the Spectre's power could not touch them, they had to take refuge in a church, where they were joined by the Huntress. Along with the horde of Darkseid's new slaves, Vandal Savage arrived with the Order of the Stone and wielded the Spear of Destiny. He used it to overpower and enslave the Spectre. Renee allowed herself to be run through with the spear just so she could then take it away from Savage. To purify the weapon, she had to use it in a selfless act rather than to heal herself, so she struck it into Crispus' spirit and healed the loss of his son. The Spectre was back to full power, and the Radiant healed her.

With Darkseid still taking over the world, Renee returned to Metropolis. She found the husk that used to be Darkseid's human host and evaded capture by SHADE when Frankenstein and them arrived. She did not get far before Checkmate found her and brought her in. They wanted her help and showed her their plans to breach the multiverse and evacuate people to a new world. According to them, she would lead the peace agency to help establish them there. What they planned did not matter. Darkseid's death dragged the Earth into the abyss, and Renee was transported by Shilo Norman's Mother Box to a parallel world. She then set out into the Bleed on a multiverse ship, having volunteered to gather the Supermen of all worlds . She succeeded in gathering this force that helped Superman against the evil Mandrakk, and her Earth was returned to its proper place, where she could return.

Asking the Question

Renee went into business as a private detective, working out of the lighthouse left to her and Tot by Vic Sage. Those who needed her help could reach her through her website and ask her the questions they needed her to find answers for. Tot worked along with her out of obligation to the memory of Vic. Her first job was to find a missing girl who had supposedly been smuggled into the country but her brother never saw her arrive.
