Red Star was exposed to a space ship which gave him his powers, and would later join the Teen Titans Edit
Russian Superhero
When a alien spacecraft landed on earth Red Star's father went to investigate it. Red followed his father. While on the ship he touched the wrong controls at the wrong time and was irridated with energies that transformed him in superhuman ways.
When the energies manifested themselves as superpowers he was take by the Soviet Union. They subjected him to tests and he became their first meta-human hero for Russia.Originally called Starfire, Leonid faithfully served the interests of the Soviet Union being carefully indoctrinated in the strident dogma of the Communist Party.
Red's father perished in the service of the Soviet Union, and through most of Red's life a Russian scientist Pyotr Raskov became his surrogate father who looked after him until adulthood.
One way the Soviet Union could control him faithfully and was to limit the access to the western world and its superbeings. But he did eventually meet United States heroes and began an on-again/off-again relationship with America's Teen Titans. Kid Flash was particularly distrustful of him.
Becoming Red Star
At one point, Red Stars loyalty was severely tested when his fiancee Maladi was the victim of a crazed bureaucrat who infected her with a fatal disease. He was forced to track her to the US where she was infecting people with her touch, it was slowly killing her also. He came into conflict with the Titans during the process and later found her but it was too late for her, she died on the day that her and Star were to be married.Shortly after this incident, Starfire was re-christened Red Star, further tying him to his homeland.
When times change he was sent to S.T.A.R.S labs and here, he was reunited with the Titans, which proved fortuitous when Hammer and Sickle of the Peoples' Heroes came looking for Leonid's blood. They were sent by a radical part of the Russian government that didnt want Red to be studied and did not want peace between Russia and US.
When learning of this deception, Red Star rebelled and, with the Titans, subdued the Russian operatives. This left him feeling a man without a country, with its infighting inside the government and his feelings on what he was taught, an what he believed in.
The Hunt
Shortly after this Titans from old and new were being captured by the Wildebeest Society, and during this Victor Stone aka Cyborg was launched in a rocket and landed in Russia brain dead. The Russian scientist were able to put Cyborg back together but werent able to complete his mind. When the Titans tracked down Cyborg the russian scientist weren't going to leave him in the custody with the Titans. Eventually Pyotr Raskov let Titans have custody of him, and Red accompanied the Titans to America to defeat the Wildebeest once and for all.
Following the events of the Titans Hunt, Red Star elected to remain a member of the team - still hoping to save Cyborg's mind. Meanwhile, fellow member Pantha developed an attraction to Red Star, much to his chagrin.
Leonid was soon called back to his homeland of Russia by Dr. Pyotr Raskov. When he returned with Cyborg, he learned of a devious plot within the walls of Science City: His father, Konstantin Kovar, was still alive and had been working in secret for years to overthrow the Russian government. Using the technology from Cyborg the Konstantin planned on creating a army of Meta-men and use them to assassinate the Russian president and blame it on the American government.
Red found out about the plot from a mysterious women only known as Anna. As the pair attempted to stop the Meta-Men, an explosion triggered a startling new power surge for Red Star; he learned that he could burst into flames and channel his power and use it for fire energy as blasts. These new abilities help put an end to Konstantin Kovar's attempt at a coup, but at a terrible price. The Konstantin killed his surrogate father, and Anna was forced to kill Konstantin as Red watched.
Touched by tragedy, Red Star returned to the States. Unknown to Red Star, a handful of Russian scientists secretly salvaged the remains of Konstantin and made him a cybernetic - perhaps brain dead - Meta-Man.
Family in Ruins
After finding out that the Titans were going to be funded by the government which he didn't want to be controlled by he left the team. When Panta and Baby Wildebeestfound out they joined him as they all left the team. They became a rag-tag dysfunctional family. They moved back to Russia and worked for their government and would help the Titans when needed.
When Superman Prime came to earth and ran amok the Superboy of our earth called on all of the Titans to help, and during the conflict the evil Superboy decapitated Pantha and slaughtered Baby Wildebeest leaving Red Star to mourn his fallen family. He returned to Russia after this only to find an uprising of "The Meta-Men Militia", a terrorist group who wanted the Russian government to sanction meta-human activities. Red stopped their terrorist attacks but his city was destroyed in the process, and he re-joined the Titans only to leave when he realized they were in disarray.
Upon returning to Russia, Red Star repelled an alien invasion in the heart of Moscow - earning the praise and accolades of his people. So much so that they appointed him State Protector a title he enjoys. Using a space craft he hovers above his homeland protecting it from any threat.
