Finally some Red Hood background
Jason Todd was savagely beaten by the Joker. His death was one of the pivotal moments in Batman’s career. This death would haunt Bruce Wayne for years. He only begins to heal when he meets Tim Drake the third boy to wear the Robin costume. In 2004 Jason returned to the DC universe as the villainous Red Hood.
Writer Judd Winick (“Pedro and me” and “Superman/Shazam: First Thunder”) attempts t tell how Jason returned from the grave in DC’s new limited series “Red Hood: The Lost Days.” The first issue focused more on Talia al Ghul than Jason. Winick does well in showing the reader the emotional motivations of Talia in regards to her interests in the catatonic Jason. We watch and follow her as her mind works to rehabilitate him, trying to earn Batman’s love. It is interesting and plotted well enough to give the reader what they want to know, but holding back enough to make them buy the next issue.
The artwork by Pablo Raimondi (X-Factor) is dynamic and eye catching. He uses color as a dramatic and vivid statement. Most panels rely on tones of yellow and blue as their main color. Talia’s expressions and movements are fluid and easy-to-read in the context of the story. Jason’s blank, soulless stare is haunting, especially during his fights.
Even if you don’t like Jason Todd, this is a comic to buy. It is well written with beautiful art, and will be a interesting chapter in the Batman mythos.
