    I recently re-read Blackest Night and found myself wondering: Why the heck is Ray Palmer the Deputy Lantern for Compassion?
     
    This is the same Ray who tortures super villains for information in James Robinson's Justice League?
     
    Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

    Well, having just read the "Sword of the Atom" TPB like a week ago..I can definitively see and understand this. 
    The "real" Ray Palmer (and not that awful characterisation you mentioned) real wants to help people. Any people. Even if he  would have to give his life, body and soul, to help others.
    And that was also the image the Ryan Choi series did give of Ray when mentioned by his student/follower second Atom.
