    Origin

    A criminal from Germany, the Rattle had a bionic tale affixed to his spine. The Rattler joined the Serpent Society after receiving an invitation from Sidewinder. During the initiation test, Rattler, Anaconda, and Cobra encountered Captain America. Though Anaconda battled the hero, Rattler protected Cobra from Captain America's shield with his vibration wave. The pair then fled, though they succeeded their test.

    Creation

    Rattler was created by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary in 1985 and first appeared in Captain America # 310.

    Character Evolution

    The Rattler later participated in the mission to assassinate MODOK, and later aided Viper in her invasion of the Serpent Society. Along with his bionic tail, he eventually began using a "Rattling Gun," which is capable of rattling his enemies' rib-cages apart.

    Major Story Arcs

    Atlantis Attacks

    Cobra would take a job from Ghaur and Llyra to obtain four objects containing arcane mystic powers. Cobra would split up members of the Serpent Society and send them to various locations to retrieve these objects. Rattler, Cottonmouth, Bushmaster and Black Racer would come into conflict with Longshot, Psylocke, Storm and Dazzler of the X-Men over a magical rock located in Iceland. Rattler would cause an avalanche with his tail when Longshot finds the special rock and buries the X-Man. Longshot survives and the X-Men are teleported away into Mr. Jip's lair when they find all four mystical items. Rattler and the rest of the Serpent Society are double crossed by Sidewinder and Diamondback, leaving them broke and battered.

    Super Patriot

    Puff Adder, Bushmaster and Asp of the Serpent Society ambush Steve Rogers and Rachel Leighton inside the super soldier's apartment. Asp takes down Rogers with a venom blast and Puff Adders knocks out Leighton with a strike from behind. The two captives are taken back to the headquarters of the Serpent Society and shackled in their uniforms as Captain America and Diamondback. Cobra wanted to punish Diamondback for defecting from the group and had plans to sell Captain America to the highest bidder which consisted of several dangerous villains. Puff Adder and Anaconda started to escort Captain America to the lower chambers when he managed to kick his shield away from Cobra's clutches and break free from his shackles. Captain America would free Diamondback and Rattler is taken down with a kick to his face. The duo easily defeat the rest of the Serpent Society and they are placed into custody by SHIELD.

    Civil War

    Recently, Rattler was seen being apprehended by the Thunderbolts alongside Bushmaster. He was forced to join the group during Civil War.

    Rattler is hanging out at the Bar With No Name with other villains when a low-life baddie named the Basher calls out Spider-Man on a website. A man called the Bookie begins to take bets on the fight and a number of shady patrons become angry when they realize the Spider-Man that fights the Basher is an imposter. However, the real Spider-Man shows up and discovers that the imposter is the woman known as Screwball. She tells Spider-Man that the Bookie could be found at the villain bar hangout. Spider-Man shows up and a brief scuffle occurs. Rattler takes a punch to the face but the bartender stops the fight and Spider-Man leaves when he gets the information he needs on the Bookie.

    X-Men: To Serve & Protect

    He later battled the New X-Men teens Anole and Rockslide, using his tail to obliterate Rockslide. However, Rockslide managed to piece himself together, and swiftly defeated Rattler and the Serpent Society.

    Industrial Revolution

    A Los Angeles criminal organization called the Pride would offer a contract to the Serpent Society and hire their services to eliminate Tony Stark after he starts to build a company in the neighborhood of Imperio. Geoffrey Wilder, the leader of the Pride wanted Sidewinder and his crew to kill Tony Stark because his presence in Los Angeles could threaten their criminal empire. The Serpent Society locates Tony Stark inside a junkyard as he looks for a motion sensor. Rattler ambushes Stark from behind with a sonic blast but soon discover he is wearing some of his old armor. Stark manages to fight off Rattler and members of the Serpent Society until he sneaks into a shack. The Serpent Society surround the shack when Sidewinder teleports inside. The shack suddenly explodes and Rattler and the other members of the Society are out for the count. Sidewinder's cloak powered up Stark's improvised kinetic field when he opened up a wormhole and the feedback caused the explosion.

    Battle Scar

    An open contract was placed on Staff Sergeant Marcus Johnson who was wanted dead or alive because his blood was needed by Orion, the former leader of LEVIATHAN. Johnson came into conflict with other contracted enemy agents like Deadpool and Taskmaster. Johnson found himself surrounded by Rattler and the Serpent Society during his fight with Taskmaster at a construction site. Johnson tried his best to fight back but was simply overwhelmed and finally struck down by Rattler's tail. Cottonmouth wanted to bite off the head of Johnson until he was shot in the head by Deadpool. The Serpent Society and Deadpool continued there fight until SHIELD agents showed up and they were all placed under arrest.

    Shock to the System

    Rattler is scoping a bank in Manhattan and comes into conflict with the new Scourge when he climbs to the rooftop. Rattler evades several gunshots and strikes Scourge with a sonic blast from his bionic tail. Scourge is barely fazed and continues to pummel Rattler with some vicious punches. Rattler lays beaten and bloodied when Scourge breaks his neck. Scourge would remove his mask and reveal his true identity as Dennis Dunphy, the ex-wrestler known as Demolition Man.

    Powers & Abilities

    Rattler has a 7-foot long bionic tail which he can use to generate sonic vibrations using the 'rattle' at the end of his tail. This can cause shockwaves, induce vertigo, disorient, and possibly kill his opponents. Due to this tail's methods, his partially deaf in both ears.

    Rattler appears alongside the Serpent Society in the episode, "Ultron-5." He is depicted as being much larger than his comic version, but retains his bionic tail that enables him to create vibrations. He briefly battles Ant-Man and Wasp, but escapes with King Cobra and Anaconda.
