The Rat Queens have survived an assassin only to find themselves faced with one ugly troll.
The Good
We're only two issues into this series and we're starting to get a real feel for the characters. In this issue we see some more of the classic RPG set-up (Melee Damage, Healer, Caster, Tank) in action, and we also get to see the Queens perform a "combo." It really helps reinforce this book as a sort of RPG parody, building that "adventuring party" or "guildmates" feel that the first issue setup, and seeing the other "guilds" or groups only adds to this.
The comedy is well-timed, even in the action sequences, which can often be difficult to pull off while still driving the story. I am looking forward to seeing some more of the Four Daves, I'm hoping they have more of a role in the story than just having a laughable name. Anyone who's played any RPGs, especially MMOs knows that while things may be divided into factions, guilds, and parties, there has to be some much larger threat looming behind the scenes, forcing these groups to work together towards a common goal. Of course, this isn't your standard RPG story, but we are already seeing the different "guilds" of this world encountering the same threats, so it does seem as if we're going to be following some more RPG conventions at least for a little bit.
The Bad
It's a bit nit-picky, but the rough quality of the artwork did bug me in a few places, I found myself distracted from the flow of the story by sketch lines that didn't seem to be erased or inked over. I really do like the style of the artwork, I just wish it was touched up a little better.
The Verdict
If you've played any RPGs or MMORPGs or are even familiar with fantasy literature you will love this comic. You'll find easily recognizable parodies of the worlds you've played in mixed in with the action and intrigue of RPG stories. Plus, you get to skip the starter quests: these characters are pre-leveled.
If you're not particularly familiar with the genre but enjoy comedy/adventure books, it's definitely worth a read, even at a $3.50 cover price.
