I have pointed out before how all the heroes would have died at various points if not for the little guy but with further thought I realized that none of the 6 movies could have happened without him. See in the beginning of episode 1 he's basically responsible for saving the life of Luke and Leia's mom, had he not been there she would have died leaving Qui Gon and Obi Wan with no reason to go to Tatooine, so they wouldn't discover Anakin, the Emperor's plot to take out the Jedi may not have worked and Luke and Leia would have never been born eliminating the original trilogy.

I wouldnt say the most important but yes, he is pretty darn important.

He definitely has the most important dialogue at least.

Best robot of all-time. I pushed pretty hard to try and get him the recognition he deserves when we did the Top 100 Science-Fiction characters list.

@jonny_anonymous: If you want to get really specific there are about 200 moments in the 6 movies were R2 could have derailed the whole thing. Pretty much every time he's shown in Episode 1 he's either saving one of the main characters directly or indirectly or he's helping the plot along in fairly significant ways that no one ever seems notice. Basically while everyone else gets side tracked with their personal BS that little droid keeps his head in the game and gets things done. Tho I will concede that C3PO was borderline useless.

Almost all of the characters are important. Except for this prick.

@joshmightbe: Yeah. But then again, you could say that about a good many characters. IF Qui Gon Jinn didn't train Obi-Wan he could've never have trained Anakin. Actually they wouldn't have DISCOVERED Anakin.

@gularte2000: True but as I pointed out, if it weren't for R2 then their whole reason for going to Tatooine wouldn't be there because Princess Amidala would be dead so they wouldn't have been on a protection detail that lead them to Anakin.

@gularte2000: Yeah but none of those people would have ended up in the positions they needed to be in without R2. When you really think about it he is the only reason Luke and Leia's mom required Obi Wan and Qui Gon in the first place. Not only that but if you go back to the original trilogy R2 is the reason Luke sought out Obi Wan in the first place so even in Chronological order he started the whole star wars ball rolling.

Isn't he one of the most consistently used characters in all six films if not the most consistently used. It's been a while since I saw the first three films so I may be wrong.

Obi-Wan is in all 6.

Everyone knows that the most important person in Star Wars was the storm tropper that let the droids get away. Those were the droids you were looking for.

What about the manufactures of R2D2? Had they not made him R2D2 wouldn't have helped anyone lol.

R2D2 proved that you could get through the Clone Wars with only a power tool and a blow torch. Who needs lightsabers and blasters eh'

He's the most important character and has the second best scream in the movies.
