No Question This Is Awesome
Renee Montoya searches for the Crime Bible in her pursuit to understand the Religion Of Crime and inadvertently becomes a part of their cult.
My Thoughts:This five issue mini-series is spinning out of the epic event 52 where Renee Montoya became The Question. Greg Rucka handles the writing as he did a lot of the writing for Renee's character during 52. I like how each issue focused on a different lesson leading up to the final climatic issue "The Parable Of The Faceless." Rucka's abilities as a writer flourish as he continues to develop Renee's character. I've enjoyed getting to know her more extensively from 52 up until now. Her journey has been fun to read and I feel as if it's still barely underway. The dialogue between Renee and Batwoman was nicely added to the story. Their relationship adds a different dynamic than you typically see in comics and has been interesting to watch unfold. Without ruining too much, I love how Rucka made Renee inadvertently succumb to the Religion Of Crime's desires. The final page was simply awesome. I can't wait to see what happens next for Renee.
The art is done by five different artists. Each issue we have a different artist so the styles are slightly different but they all share in common a dark, gritty feel which suits the story so well. Matthew Clark's issue was my favorite. He's definitely a talented artist and I wouldn't have minded him tackling the art solo on this series. The other artists are great but Clark's art stood out compared to their work. I certainly have no complaints on the overall art presentation. It was a perfect fit and made this comic very enjoyable to read.
I would highly recommend getting familiar with Renee Montoya if you don't know who she is. I would read 52 before this just to get the whole story. This mini-series is worth both your time and your money. Strong writing and well crafted artwork make this a standout comic.
