Valiant's Got A Hit
Eric and Woody Henderson are two brothers who have been apart for quite some time. When their father is killed, they are brought together again at his funeral. The pair team-up to investigate his death and head to his workplace, Quantum Industries. It is here where they will become the world's worst superhero team, Quantum and Woody.
The Good: There is a lot to praise for this issue. The writing and art are great. These characters are developed rather well with only a bit of information given about each and a couple of flashbacks to when they were kids. It is through the dialogue where these characters are explored, and there is great banter between the title characters. Woody's rude and ignorant remarks are hilarious and they're not to be taken seriously, which makes him a loveable character instantly. He's funny, and his brother is the more serious type, having succeeded in school as well as in the military. Now this doesn't make Eric (Quantum) a boring character, as he is also a funny character. The art here is fantastic and the colors look beautiful, they really go hand in hand with the tone of the book. This issue is also very new reader friendly, as this was my first Quantum and Woody book and I understood everything that was going on because it is explained well throughout the issue. The characters are an excellent pair and go back and forth with each other with some great lines that really make the dialogue flow (I would love to see what a Deadpool vs Quantum and Woody comic would look like). The book has a light-hearted voice, and it makes for an all around fun experience. Very few books have made me laugh as much as this issue did.
The Bad: There wasn't anything that bothered me about this issue, but it is very much a set-up/origin issue with little action so that may drag this issue down for some readers.
Verdict: This was a great issue. It's a fun read, the art is appealing, and the series can be accessed by new readers. I never gave Valiant much of a chance but they continue to surprise me, and this is another excellent series they have going. If you're looking for a Valiant series to start or just a new series in general, check out Quantum and Woody.
