Pythagoras had many followers. He was a Pre-Socratic (before Socrates) philosopher. He believed that numbers revealed the pattern of the universe. So, he along with his followers dedicated much of their lives studying numbers along with numeric patterns found in music.

Today, his philosophy is still often followed by numerologists and mystics.
