Yes. I actually think they did fight once and the Torch powered down so that he wouldn't be controlled similar to what happens when Colossus fights Magneto.
Ha! yeah that was summed up quickly wasn't it! shame that in the comics he isn't similar to his movie counter part- it would make the character much cooler using a lighter than having the bloody flamethrower canister stuck to his back! n give him a cigarette too to utilize. p.s even if torch did power down wouldn't he still get manipulated to a certain extreme? and what was the outcome in the end between the 2?
Yes, Pyro has pyropathy while Human Torch has pyrokinesis. Pyro is not a fire-creature like Human Torch but has the ability/power to control fire.
I think one interesting way to look at this question is motivation. Since Human Torch is a fire creature, he would have more elemental/scientific respect for the properties of fire and flammability, but since Pyro is an arsonist and maniac, he would have more motivation to simply 'man-handle' flames and arrogantly use the chaos of fire.
You could argue, therefore, that Pyro has a devilish control over fire, which is why there are intrigue-rich references to him tussling with Human Torch.
I mean, who should have more control over fire --- a flame shaman (Human Torch) or a pyromaniac/arsonist (Pyro)? I guess the answer depends on how you look at fire itself. We use fire to cook and produce heat and combust/burn materials, but it is very sensitive and challenging to handle/control, so we think of it as naturally chaotic (and dangerous), unlike, say, water!
You could therefore argue that only a pyromaniac/arsonist like Pyro should/would have a brutish mastery over fire, making his tussle with Human Torch not necessarily boring or clear.
SHIVA: Fire has three values --- devastation, fluidity, and blindness. PYRO: To control and redirect the flames of fire is to wield authority over rage. SHIVA: Fire is balanced by water, and water can be as destructive. PYRO: To play with fire is to hover over fairies.

It doesn't seem the Human Torch would be as interested in pyrotechnics fantasies, making Pyro's use of fire potentially much more terrifying.
