Plot Summary

Overview

In the ashes of CIVIL WAR comes this modest service for its tallest victim -- the stainless steel sultan of stretch, Stilt Man!

In a sleazy pub, Frank Castle's first super-victim is laid out on the tables, his life and legacy celebrated by a veritable who's who of Marvel villains that come to pay their respects, not just for a fallen friend, but for a lost way of life. Raise a glass, friends, and join us in this year's MUST SEE funeral! Even Spider-Man’s gonna be there!

In a small bar, the wake for Wilbur Day, the Stilt-Man is being held. A group of villains and one-time villains all gather to pay their respect. Conversations are held about how things have changed since the "old day." Alcohol is consumed, toasts are made, dance moves are shown, and the inevitable fights break out.

As things are getting out of control, Spider-Man shows up. He begins to lecture them about how this is a wake and they should be showing their respect. He then tells Puma to get Prowler out of there.

The villains, still semi-drunk, begin to get enraged. Not only did they just get lectured by Spider-Man, they also let him simply walk out of the bar. They then vow to be true to their evilness as they notice that they don't feel so well. They soon realize that they've all been poisoned. It was slow enough that no one noticed. One of the villains sees a bar napkin with a skull drawn on it. As some attempt to leave the bar, it goes up in a ball of flames.

Frank Castle had been posing as the bartender the entire night. He walks away in somewhat good spirits.

An outstanding and darkly comedic one-shot

This issue of War Journal is such an exemplary Punisher story, it's up there with the best of the other more mature Punisher yarns, and it definitely stands head and shoulders above the rest of War Journal.

It's Stilt-Man's wake and a motley crew of B-list villains has assembled at the pub where the viewing is taking place. Hilarity ensues as the imbibed villains become nostalgic, sentimental, and infuriated with eachother, leading to a drunken brawl.

One lecture from a friendly neighborhood super-hero later and the abashed villains are vowing to stop being worthless push-overs. But, things really get hairy as the villains begin to drop like flies, and those remaining realize that they've stepped right into a trap.

Matt Faction has crafted a truly dark comedic masterpiece with War Journal #4. It's a one-shot that deserves to be recognized for its excellence.
