Oh, heavens to Betsy!

'Psylocke' #1 of 4
Written by: Christopher Yost
Art by: Harvey Tolibao
Cover by: David Finch

The moment that all Psylocke fans have been waiting for has finally arrived with the release of the first part of her four issue mini-series written by Chris Yost with art by the incredibly talented Harvey Tolibao. While I personally felt that the David Finch cover left something to be desired, Tolibao's interiors are an aesthetic pleasure and brilliantly make-up for the sloppiness of the cover's image.

The story opens up seventeen hours into the future where we see Psylocke clearly decapitating her opponent. In the midst of the blood and gore, is an inner monologue that distinctly reflects the soul searching journey she has just endured. This is quite possibly one of the easiest ways that Yost could have structured the book. While it makes for a somewhat better organized outline to the story, it lacks some excitement and enthusiasm and sets up to be somewhat predictable. However, predictable does not mean it is not good! It is refreshing to see so many characters that had formerly heavily influenced the character throughout her continuity, return to make appearances in this issue. This series is being set up to be a clear journey for Psy, and it will be interesting to see what happens to her as the story progresses. Did you read the issue? What did you think?
4 out of 5.

Heavens to Betsy. Okay that's funny. And yay for the Butterfly telepathy coming back, that's what made Betsy Betsy in the early days before she was a ninja.

OHMYGOD, thank youu soooooo much for reviewing this, i think that you made some very nice observations and hopefully the rest of this series will be just as good : )
And a tiny part of me believes that my comment is the reason why you did this review ; )
Thanks alot,

Having not read anything mutant related in 13 years, something made me get this. After reading it, I had to come here and read Psylocke's page to fill myself in on what was happening. I liked the interior art. I'm expecting something amazing now, since we already see how this ends.

Great review by the way.

I think this will be Harvey Tolibao's big break.  He seems to have won Marvel's editors with his work on Anita Blake, but he's winning me with the preview art for this alone.  And I enjoy Chris Yost's writing.  When he did the Storm series last year he knew how to draw in support characters from both aspects of Storm's life (ie BY in Africa & the X-Men in San Francisco).  I've been too tired to swing by my comic store, but I'm going to make sure to grab this tomorrow.  I think the combination of art, writer & Dazzler have won it for me...

BTW Babs, your hair is looking very sleek & sexy :)

Really dig the interior art! I'm glad Psylocke is getting a push. She's always been one of my favorite characters.

It's a shame that after I enjoyed the Necrosha one-shot so much that I found this so disappointing.

Ridiculous out-of-nowhere battles, emo-blog thought captions, and that vanity costume with the ribbons. Great artwork, though. And I enjoy Yost enough to give the second issue a chance.

Hey, maybe the arm on the cover was deformed because Finch spent so much time on the butt shot?

My only complaint with Harv is how he does noses. Something about putting a giant circle on them is rather gross.

LMAO B at the Dazzler bit. <3

Out of nowhere battles? there was one and that was all just to set up the rest of the mini. I think the "emo" bit is understandable as she is carrying her old body to it's resting place.

LOL!  I haven't noticed that, but I'm sure I will from now on ;)  A bit like that strange line they draw on girls' noses in Wolverine & the X-Men that makes it look like they've all suffered a broken nose in the past ;p

Is it me, or does Dazzler's costume look SO much better when drawn by someone that isn't Greg Land or Terry 'Adam Hughes-Lite' Dodson??

She's her own pallbearer?  That's kinda harsh... you'd think with a island loaded with teleporters, one of them would have offered to help ;)

I'm sooo tempted to post pictures. He did a few issues of Ultimate X-Men and i remember Jean Grey distinctly looking like Owen Wilson due to that. You;ll see when you get it.

You're so correct. It doesn't look like she's attempting to be an astronaut. Still hate the stupid thing though.

Help was offered, she opted to fly the X-Jet alone... but you'll see what happens next [=

How can you go wrong with sexy female ninja type character? The art looks badass. Hope the story is tight too. Nice review.

4 out of 5 huh? that's pretty generous, I read it to and it didn't knock my socks off. Mainly because I don't know any of the back story so it left me confused. . . . The art in it was amaing - and it's very cool to hear a woman's perfspective of any comic. Especially because you can do your review with out sound effects.

Thanks!

4 out 5?  really? this book wasn't that good....maybe a 3 if that....it was just an average read for me

I see what you mean about the arm. Not to mention, for the pose, it lacks in foreshortening.

I don't know if it's the lighting of the room, but it looks as if you are glowing, Babs.

I like having it so not all the X-Men are buddy-buddy. Some have conflicts and some and close. The artwork reminds me of the Jim Lee style era of X-Men. I think it would be a boring read if everything was to be explain within a single issue. It's good that not everything is explained right away.

Harvey Tolibao's art is truly epic... However, I'm not a big fan of the faces he draws. They just look... Off center? Not really sure if that's the word, but anyways, the issue looks great, great review too.

Im glad the series has Dazzler.  She is a fun character.  Still, Psylocke is pretty annoying (in Utopia she was insufferable).

that's the way it shows when she's using her telepathy.
