Favorite Villains

It has been said that the greatest villains are those opposite the heroes in every way. Batman and Joker: control and reservation versus chaos and enjoyment. Superman and Lex Luther: all brawn versus all brain. X-Men and Magneto: coexistence and equality versus terror and domination. I believe that everyone can see a great villain, but only a few can explain why he is great. Here, I have compiled a list of my favorite villains. They aren't all powerful; they aren't all flashy. But they all are polar opposites of the heroes they play against. And that is what makes them great villains.

List items

  • I said in my favorite characters list, but in my opinion Joker is the greatest comic book villain of all time because of exactly what I said above: he is the exact opposite of Batman in every way. The only quality they share was noted by Gordon in the Batman Begins movie: 'Taste for the theatrical, like you.'

  • Easily the greatest X-Men villain and probably my favorite Marvel villain of all.

  • I know he's a TV character, but I saw him on here and love him too much not to include Gabriel. The other characters on the show Heroes fight for different reasons, but where they seek to become something, Sylar is completely evil. He isn't interested in becoming anything except more powerful.

  • I know what you're thinking. Two X-Baddies out of four so far. Deal with it. I'm partial to the X-Men:P

  • Even more than Venom, Carnage is the complete opposite of Spider-Man. Obviously not in powers and appearance, but that's not what I'm looking at anyways.

  • A personal favorite. I love me some Two-Face:) He's all about chance and Batman leaves nothing to chance.

  • Pyro is not an epic villain, but I've always found him severely entertaining for some reason.

  • Same as Pyro; not very epic but a personal favorite.

  • I thought Penance was a very well conceived character.

  • One of the few Avengers villains I like.

  • My favorite sith actually:)

  • I add her, because making her an X-Man was 1) completely out of character 2) just an attempt to attract horny fan-boys

  • I figured I brought him up so I should probably include him

  • This is the one exception to my list. Barbossa is not the opposite of Jack Sparrow (although he is in a way the opposite of Will Turner) but he is still one of the most entertaining villains I have come across.

  • Don't know how I missed her the firs time around. Mystique is a great villain. I would say that (like half the X-Men's rogues gallery) her opposite is Wolverine, although she doesn't really care who she goes up against. Wolverine is all busta move and kill people through sheer strength, while Mystique is more patient. She knows what she wants and is willing to wait as long as it takes to get it.
