xerox-kitty's Comic Give-Away: Daredevil The Man Without Fear

It's time to give away some more comics, so without further ado here's the introduction...

Show & Tell - The Rules

What is your favourite piece of memorabilia?  It can be a poster, book, action figure, clothing or even a comic book.  Now you need to show it off & tell us all about it!

  • Show:   First off, you need to take a photograph of your favourite piece of comic memorabilia.  To prove that you haven't found a random photo on the internet, you must include yourself in the photograph!
  • Tell:  Then you must write about WHY it is your favourite item.  This can not be any less than a paragraph (roughly 3 or 4 sentences long) and no more than 2 paragraphs.  this way you can't just say "It's cool!".
  • Only one 'Show & Tell' item per person.  Think you've got a lot of stuff to choose from?  Well so have I & I still came up with 1 item!  ;)
  • Only one entry per person .  Anyone caught submitting multiple entries will be disqualified.

The Prize

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear issues 1 to 5 by Frank Miller & John "JRJR" Romita Jr.  Each issue has a tough card cover that has been embossed and has a ghostly image of Daredevil stamped in red foil in the background.

  • Issue 1 is still sealed with a Dynamic Forces holographic sticker.  The Certificate of Authenticity confirms that it has "been signed by Artists John Romita, Jr. and Al Williamson".  Although the issue has never been read, there is a clear & distinctive crease in the spine, and the corner of the cover at the very bottom of the spine appears slightly dog-eared.  The backing board itself is also creased along the very top.
  • Issue 2 is the worst for wear.  I has a variety of creases down the spine.
  • Issues 3 to 5 appear to be in perfect condition (for comics that are 18 years old).

I bought this mini series roughly a decade ago.  I was lucky enough to find the complete set at a comic book mart.  Despite the fact that I have owned these for a decade, I have never read these comics.  They have since been kept stored in a short-box, all bagged with boards.  Therefore any signs of wear occurred before they were purchased.

Example Entry

 xerox-kitty's Power Pack: Origin Album
 xerox-kitty's Power Pack: Origin Album
I will never let go of my Power Pack: Origin Album trade paperback, because it was the first 'comic' I ever bought from the first time I ever went in to a comic book shop.  Many years later, I ended up working in that same comic book shop.  So in a way, this is the catalyst to my life long hobby.

I was 11 when I was taken a long on a trip into the city.  We were looking for Thundercats & Transformers back issues for my brother, and my mom asked if I wanted anything.  The book was out of reach on a shelf in the middle of the store & I had already been transfixed by its bright appearance and quality leather-bound cover; I just had to have it!  Although I was disappointed it wan't really a leather-bound volume, I was entranced by the story inside.  So much so that during English class, I would purposefully pick the largest book I could find in the library to hide it in... and secretly read Power Pack instead!

Deadline

Post your entry in a comment to this thread.  There is a new deadline (because of the downtime we've been experiencing).  All entries must be received by Saturday 30 April 2011 by 21:00 (9pm) BST.  That's British Summer Time.  I'm afraid I don't know what time that is around the world, so make sure you check the internet for Time Zone conversions.

Have Fun & Good Luck!

@xerox-kitty: you are such a creative vixen aren't you :)
Great idea and nice job with the video. It works very well outside, you get great lighting at the right time and the background noise is tranquil.
Nice choice of yours too, I'm a longtime Power Pack fan too. Have the entire first series in well taken care of condition.

Now for the hard part, picking the single most important thing to me in my collection. This is gonna pop a brain cell for sure to come up with.

@CATPANEXE: Someone said that I sounded like a robot (so I removed his comment)

@Vance Astro: You could always enter & give it as a present?? Or nominate someone else to receive it?  Or just enter for the hell of it :)

@tonis: There's an out-take of pigeons flapping about in the trees behind me. How inconsiderate of them!

@ViciousCesar!:  It doesn't have to be the first thing in your collection, but what is most important to you.  That thing you'll hold on to for years.  That you've kept 'for all the right reasons' (unlike me holding on to that signed issue).  Good luck :)

My name is Alex Phillips/AMP - Seeker of Lost Knowledge, and my comic of choice is New Teen Titans Vol. 1 #1. The reason why I picked this comic out of the many other comics in my collection is that this one has a rich history. It was 2006, I was in the 10th grade and my new friend (Will) invited me to go to WonderCon in San Francisco with him (which wasn't far from San Rafael). It was also my first time to go to an actual comic book convention (and than it became an annual event/ritual for me and my friends). A few hours later into the convention I stumble to one exhibitor booth and was looking around in a box that was selling comics for $6. After flipping through like maybe 4 or 5 comics later, I stumbled upon something I never thought to achieve in a life-time: THE NEW TEEN TITANS VOL. 1 #1. When I knew what the item was, I immediately said, "Sold! For $6!". Normally, that comic would be like $100 or more, but on my first comic book convention trip, I was one lucky SOB. Thanks to that comic, my first comic book convention trip will always be treasured in my memories.

This comic was responsible for lunching the TEEN TITANS cartoon show that I enjoyed watching and made me curious to know everything about the Teen Titans and their enemies (I guess you can call me a Titan-fanatic if you must). The cover itself lead to many homage covers for a lot of Titans comic from over the years (the last one was probably the BLACKEST NIGHT TEEN TITANS #77 - featuring BLACK LANTERN VERSIONS OF HAWK, TEMPEST, AQUAGIRL, PHANTASM, PANTHA, WILDEBEEST and KOLE). When I watched episode 62 of TEEN TITANS (SEASON 5, "GO!"), it showed how the team was formed (along with an animated cameo appearance of the artist who drawn the comic book series - GEORGE PEREZ). The episode itself almost matched everything the first issue shown (I also have DC ARCHIVES: THE NEW TEEN TITANS Vol. 1, and read it instead of the comic I bought) and was amazed to know the difference between the comic and show. My comic was the first rare item I have in my collection and just recently I had it autographed by MARV WOLFMAN himself at WonderCon'11, and now I have some worth so much more that I can be ready for a happy retirement....

The Comic: Generation X #1
The Story: This is one of the only comics I have left from my childhood..In fact it is the only comic I have left from my childhood. I was an incredibly messy and unorganized kid.It hasn't really changed but I do at least keep my video games and comics in a safe place. Most of my comics were destroyed by my own carelessness and disregard. They were left laying around and after months of mistreatment they got all warn down..covers fell off, pages were ripped out..the whole 9. I had this comic since the 90's but it wasn't until about 2006 that I actually read it. From about '99 to 2006 I hadn't read any comics because I didn't like to read for pleasure I was just fanatical about comic characters because of all of the Animated Series in the 90's.Before I went away to college in Canada I read this comic and it was the book that put me back on to Marvel Comics and Comics and general.I have been reading a massive amount of comics ever since. It's not autographed or worth tons of money but this is a special comic to me.

Sorry for the huge Pic.

My Beloved Ghostbuster 1 bean bag

You know how people rememebr their first kiss, drink of beer etc well sitting in this beanbag i was first made aware of Comics and superheros as a toddler. Picture a time 20 years ago when i was but a mere 4 year old (1990) i would sit in my bean bag watching  shows like the real Ghsotbusters/Transformers/He-man. These shows  lead me into visting my local comic shop and spending my pocket money,  i would then return to the bean bag and read. This cycle  carried on through and past other animated shows  such as the Xmen and Ironman  shows that where part of the infamous Marvel action hour i used to watch every saturday morning till it stopped.  Some of you may ask do u still use this bean bag its 20 years old, to which i say yes i do i still chill out and read comics  or watch tv using it from time to time. Its not worth much but its preety much where my life choice of geekness started from.

Aha, thought I would include something from DC now, didn't you? In all fairness though while there are many prized and cherished possessions from DC that I own, this number 1 issue of the 1974-1975 volume of Human Torch is what I deem to be my most dearly beloved piece of comic memorabilia.  It was written in 1974 by John Romita Sr. and contains a story involving Johnny Storm and Jim Hammond crossing paths.  It was given to me as a birthday gift for my 14th birthday which was many, oh so many moons ago now.

This comic is especially important to me because it quite frankly stoked interest for Marvel Comics in my mind where no interest had indeed been before.  I recall that at the time I was given this item I was an almost universal fan of DC comics and didn't bother to read anything else, figuring everything else in the comic world was lacking.  When I actually opened the comic and began to read it, however I found myself being immersed in Johnny Storm's world and the issues and problems he dealt with as FF's youngest member.  Through reading this comic I came to learn something profound, that a comic enthusiast must always be willing to think outside his or her comfort zone and enjoy material from rival publishers in order to really enjoy the art medium.  I became a Marvel fan thereafter and branched off to reading other material in time.  Now I try to make it a point to familiarize myself with at least something each publisher does, or try to anyway.  Because of this and the fact that it was the first Marvel comic I ever received, I'll never let it go.  It will have to be pried from my cold dead hands.  Only then will someone be able to read what has become my most prized item in my comic collection.

Everyone needs to have a piece of them in the photo.  Your CV profile page can be a backdrop, but can't physically replace you.  Even if it's just a hand or the top of your head (like in my example photo) you still need to be in the photo.  I figured it proves that you didn't steal the photo off the internet and it forces any camera-shy members to get creative with their photography ;)

@jubilee042: I'm so sorry to hear that.  I'd hoped that the Easter break would give people time to goof about for half an hour.  I hope you find the time to join in, but if not then I promise there will be other contests in future (and good luck with your studies :)

@The Dark Huntress: Thank you!  I'm curious what your favourite comic-based item is...!

Like I say in the video, "And it doesn't matter where you live, this Contest is open to everybody no matter where you are in the world".

@aztek the lost: Is that a good "hmm..." or a bad one?

You can only 'show & tell' one item.  So it would have to be one comic (not a set of comics) sorry.  It's all part of the challenge!  ;)

This actually took me awhile to choose. And not just because of the photo's I had to take, but also really realize why it was the most memorable in my arsenal.

The Island, by Mike Mignola. Both issues, and as you can see, these covers are stunning. Issue one actually has some continuing art on the back that I wish I'd snapped a photo of, but alas, I've already taken my photos. The cover and interior art was all done by Mignola. It was this series that actually got me back in to comics. I mean, I'd been reading them for a long time, and I was always a fan of the Hellboy character. He wasn't running around in a cape jumping tall buildings. He was big. He was ugly. He was fighting monsters alongside a pyrokinetic and a fish man named after Abe Lincoln again inter-dimensional demons and the mad monk Rasputin. He was monstrous, sure, but people loved him. He was an everyman, blue collar demon hunter. And for three years after The Third Wish came out, Hellboy fans were left in a bit of a dry spell.

But when his heralding was finally returned (after production of the first Hellboy film, of course) we fanboys of Mignola rejoiced. The Island recants the tale of how Hellboys right hand of doom came in to existence, all the way from the creation of the Ogdru Jahad. Sure, they may not be the most expensive pieces in my arsenal. But within those pages is one of the best literary tales I've ever seen, and with art that still gets my heart racing today. Hell, I've wanted some of the art in these issues as tattoos (especially issue two's cover). These two have been with me through four moves, two presidents, and I still try to take the time every month to read them at least once.

Sorry, I couldn't watch the video, my internet is capped and slower than a seven year old trying to read Ulysses.

Anyways, here's my my entry;

No Caption Provided

The Dark Knight Strikes Again (TPB)
This is my first time telling this story to anyone, so it's kind of funny I'm telling it to everyone.
So straight away I should tell you that this book was worth AUD $26 when it was bought, so it's probably worth about $15 now, since I keep my stuff in good condition. There's nothing special about this book physically, (the love I have for it is mostly incidental) it's not signed or anything like that. The actual story itself is pretty bad. You'd know that if you read it, Miller wrote this during his later years (aka his crazy years), so it's mostly just a collection of truly awful ideas interspersed with some genuinely good, but totally overshadowed, ones. And the art is quite terrible.
Regardless, I positively adore this book; and here's why.

As you can probably tell from the fact that my name is a tribute to my favourite song (a song about suicide), I'm not exactly a happy person. Anyway, a few years ago during my Year 11 camp, which was set in the bush; I found a nice secluded area with a strong overhanging branch where I intended to kill myself. So I set up a noose using this really awesome belt that I've had for ages, when I got a phone call.
It was from my parents who said they had a bad feeling and just wanted to check up on me. Now it should be noted that my parents basically know nothing about comics other than what I've told them, and since I hate pretty much everything else, I talk about comics A LOT. I mention what I've read, what I have and which stories I love, one of them being the Dark Knight Returns. Back to the story; my dad told me that he went into the city to the closest comic store to my house (45 minutes away) and got me the Dark Knight Strikes Again, because he knew I didn't have it and that it was a sequel to a story that I loved. He told me that it'd be there waiting when I got home. Now the fact that my parents bought me a Batman comic was, of course, pretty sweet, but I don't care about that so much as what it represents. It showed that even though pretty much everyone else I knew ignored me, hated me or just thought I was a psycho, my parents still listen to everything that I say, and they still care about me, even when it seems like the world would rather me dead. And 3.5 years later, I'm still here.

So yeah, the end.

Yes, absolutely!  But please write about it in English (or it'll take forever for me to translate it ;)

DEADLINE EXTENSION

Because of the unexpected attack from SkyNet, I'm going to extend the deadline to enter the Contest.  After all, it was time in which people could enter the Contest that was lost.  So...

The New Deadline To Enter By Is Saturday 30 April 2011 at 21:00 hours BST

(That should give ample time after Doctor Who has finished ;)

@xerox-kitty: Ah, I see from your video that you've been enjoying the amazing English sunshine like me, time I should of spent revising... but any-who, here's my entry and thank god for deadline extensions! ( As you can see I am a student ;) )

Please ignore the Snoopy T-Shirt, it's my go-to paint shirt and I've been painting all day...

My favourite memorabilia is my signed, hardcover copy of the JLA earth 2 graphic novel, written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Frank Quitely. This is so special to me because it was the very first graphic novel/hardcover book I've ever owned, and ever since then I only ever get hardcover graphic novels or trades (with a few exceptions, I'm not made of money!). It was bought for me by my Aunt, who always sustains my geek needs around holidays and my birthdays, and therefore gets me the best presents out of anyone else ;)

The book is signed by Frank Quitely, one of my favourite artists, however at the time I had never seen his art before and had never read anything by Grant Morrison, let alone seen anything with both of them on the same title, and most viners will agree that this in itself is reason enough to love this book! And although I know that creators sign thousands of pieces of merchandise (my copy being number 147 out of 1500!), having something that a creator has signed always makes the comic a little bit more special for me, a little bit more personal, and having the DF certificate always sends a slight tingle through me! Not to mention that the comic book story inside is amazing and set off my curiosity and interest in alternate reality's!

Elric of Melnibone, Demon Slayer Limited Edition Signed by Brom Print #141 of 1000

It was hard to decide on a single item, I literally have thousands of items that fanboys would kill to have and I was going to submit my Complete Calvin and Hobbes box set because this print would have brought up a lot of emotions and I didn't want to show that on the net but I'm going to do it anyways.

See that is my arm there and my profile kitty, I even cut my nails off so I wouldn't freak people out :D

I've worked in comic book retail over half my life starting when I was twelve, in my later high school years a man named Gil joined our staff and we quickly formed a bond over our obsession with comics. Over time Gil became like a father to me as I had never had one and we started taking trips all over California by bus and later by car to visit new comic book stores we had never been to in the hopes of filling the ever present gaps in our personal collections. One of Gils big passions was Elric so for a birthday present I ordered the limited edition Elric print for Gil and I had planned on having it framed for him. Gil missed work for a couple days and then Wednesday he was not at the store for the new shipments and we knew something was wrong. Nobody could get ahold of him and on Thursday one of Gil's co-workers at his security guard job found him in his trailer and he had died of a massive heart attack on Monday.

As it tends to happen with comic book merch the print arrived late, two months after Gils birthday, and when we opened it everyone in the store was saddened. In the ensuing years the three store owners split up and all but one of the nine stores were shut down, three more employees died along with six of our regular long time customers and two employee family members, the store changed ownership a few times and eventually after 16 years working there the store was closed a forgotten pathetic shadow of what it had been and a legacy had ended. I still cherish the print I bought for Gil even though he never had the chance to see it and every time I see it it makes me think back to all the good times we had and all the father/son type moments we had together where he helped me through depression, girls, boys, suicide attempts, cutting, homelessness and graduations to name a few. I will never forget Gil for all he has done and that print will always have a special place in my collection. Some are probably wondering why I never framed it and honestly I don't know why, I just could never bring myself to do it and I keep it in the box it shipped in still.

And if you want to see a better looking picture of the print you can see one here on the site (that I did not take I just include it for people that want to see a better version of the print not taken with my old camera phone).

@pikahyper: Sorry sweetie, but there's a maximum limit on how much you can write (2 paragraphs) so I'm afraid you'll need to trim your explanation.

@Roxanne Starr: N'ah, he's got better taste... He knows if he wants to win then he has to enter like everyone else (instead of buttering up the moderator ;)
