Honestly, due to the cocktail served (which includes midazolam and hydromorphone), he most likely did not feel anything. The gasping of air was the body itself slowly shutting down, but he himself was probably comatose. I am sure it was somewhat horrific to watch, but the chances that he was feeling any pain, are very slim. I once transported someone to the ER who had lost a good chunk of their brain, but the body had yet to fully shut down, and they gasped and snorted for air all the way to the ER, where they were pronounced. Sometimes the body just refuses to shut down, even after the brain has done so.
Also considering that if he were gasping and snorting, his body was probably not getting the full amount of oxygen it needed, and the brain was most likely hypoxic long, long before the two hour period (it really doesn't take that long for the brain to become hypoxic), so on the off chance that he did suffer, it probably wasn't for long. It may not be much consolation to those who oppose such things, but there it is.
As for the rest, I'll stay out of the discussion, as these issues tend to get fairly heated.
