What has happened to cartoons?

Rhetorical Question...
=======

To let you all know, I was born in the 90s so this blog may perhaps be a tad biased against what is now showing on TV, don't have to agree with me but I am just sharing my points with everyone.

Alright so what has happened to cartoons these days? Compared to what is showing now I think(remember my opinion) that what is shown now on TV is just so....so....bad, compared to what was shown during the 90s era of cartoons. Especially on cartoon network, for a time when they showed live action shows I was like...."WHAT?" this channel is meant for CARTOONS not live action shows....now I don't see any of those things just cartoons which is fine with me, however the cartoons I see...just don't match up to what was shown before. (Minus looney tunes, and scooby doo(the old ones). I remember when shows had a plot, a good story to tell, great characters that you could really enjoy.....but now all I see are a bunch of lame shows trying to be "cool" with dumb jokes or plots not to meant some of the animation is TERRIBLE!

Now this isn't to say that all shows that came with 2000 were bad, no...but there are VERY FEW shows that are/were worth watching and I will be listing those shows now.

JL/JLU

Teen Titans

Batman Beyond

Young Justice(Haven't really watched this show, mostly because I kinda missed episodes and don't like watching after a good number has gone by. But from the looks of it, looks to be alright.)

I suppose everyone is seeing a pattern here, yes they are all superhero shows but really these are the only shows that I can remember that were any good in the 2000 era. Every other show I tried to watch just seemed so....bland...now lets look back on cartoons in the 90s, that were a great watch.

Ed, Edd, n Eddy

Batman:TAS

Superman:TAS

Dexter's labratory

PPG(Powerpuff girls)

Looney Tunes(Older ones)

Scooby Doo(Older ones)

Samurai Jack

SWAT Kats

Tiny Toon Adventures

Anamaniacs

Am probably forgetting a few, but you get the idea lots of good shows. Now yes Looney Tunes and Scooby Doo were before 90s, however they were shown and are still shown to this day and why? Because they are a good series of cartoons, timeless ones that can't really be beat no matter how hard someone tries it just isn't possible, adults can still watch them and enjoy the shows, now you know you made a good show when today adults would still watch them.

I have asked myself a few times, what is wrong with the writers these days? Did they stop caring about making good shows? Really...if you have a good show, that people will watch then you don't need to worry about not making money because you will. In order to have a good show, you need good writers, a good idea for the show, good characters, and a good plot. It seems today writer's just throw in whatever, and hope that people watch the shows....that isn't how you make a good show sorry.

Anyway those are my thoughts, been wanting to put em down for a while. Disagree or agree, whichever I was also gonna get into Disney but i'll save that for some other time so...enjoy reading folks.

I miss Ed Edd n Eddy...

The least they can do is have channels like cartoon network and Nickelodeon air there old shows.

I'm surprised fairly odd parents is still airing but not Jimmy Neutron.

I think the only cartoons I still watch on TV are Transformers: Prime, Green Lantern TAS, Young Justice, and Legend of Korra (and all these shows are pretty much on hiatus or have ended their current season so we have to wait for some time for the next season to air).

I remember a time when boys watched Thundercats, and girls watched My Little Pony, but now "grown men" watch My Little Pony, and only handful of people watch Thundercats. We're truly approaching The End of Days.

I currently watch Young Justice and Regular Show (and often if I see it on, I'll watch Adventure Time, but its not something that I set out to watch, really). Cartoons nowadays just don't compare to how they used to be.

I mean, when you look at gems like Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League, JLU, Ed Edd n Eddy, Jimmy Neutron, Teen Titans, Samurai Jack... even The Batman... modern cartoons just don't compare. At all.

@cyberninja:  Yes forgot about Thundercats, awesome show.

I don't see how anyone can watch Adventure time, or regular show....perhaps someone can enlighten me but those shows seem so...bad. But then again am coming from watching cartoons in the 90s when actual good shows were on, but seeing those two shows....the style of it and all they seem really bad.

Also anyone notice how what shows that were considered Y-7 in the 90s, would be considered PG by today's tv ratings?

The '80's surely had the best cartoons. Coming home from school and sitting down and watching some great shows. Saturday mornings were the best. So many good shows on CBS, ABC, and NBC. Truly talented people made these cartoons.

'80's cartoons definitely "something to grown on."

I know what you mean, I'm also a 90's kid and cartoons when I was growing up used to mean something

-Doug
-Hey Arnold!
-The Wild Thornberries
-Rugrats

They used to be for all ages but had jokes that older kids would understand they used to be well written, quirky and fun, even now at 20, I still enjoy reruns.

Heck even the silly shows like Angry Beavers, EARLY Spongebob, Invader Zim and Dexter's Lab had substance.

Now most shows on the air are just idiotic and catering toward 4 year olds.

i was raised in the 90s , best damn cartoons EVAH!!!

only new cartoons i watch is young justice and green lantern (yes i watch it!) what i catch my self seein is phineas and ferb and spongebob , silly cartoons but still fun. my prob is tween shows , they arent funny and i look at my lil brothers and sister like "why are we watching this??"

maybe its because im getting old but if the stuff that's out now is what my kids will eventually watch i rather sit em down to netflix (Ultraforce, street sharks, reboot, beast wars!!!!) then let em watch crap like icarly or anything like that (cant name em but there is 100 shows like it on the air )

I think cartoons threads like this are foolish. the baby boomers who watched cartoons in their time are saying, "omg these 90;s cartoon sucks ass." Notice a pattern?

My sense of humor changes and I can't watch some of these currents cartoons and 90's cartoons but my 7 year old self would.

No 90's cartoons has touched me like avatar the last air-bender.90's x-men comes close to the amount of character development avatar had but that show is outdated since the animation doesn't hold up.Although I can't stand to watch most modern cartoons. I chose some and for the ones I do watch...I have enjoined better than the 90's cartoons.

You think it's foolish to reminisce? I get the feeling most of the people in this thread notice the pattern of each generation thinking they grew up with the best toys, shows, etc.

If anybody said something like that in this thread I guess I missed it. I can't speak for everyone obviously but I would like to imagine most of the people posting here are intelligent enough to realize they are most likely biased towards cartoons they grew up with.

I really cannot stand the Cartoon Network for it's current line-up (though I do enjoy Gumball and, though I've missed a lot of both of these shows, I do enjoy Thundercats and Young Justice. Green Lantern ain't too bad either) as well as Nickelodeon's and Disney's (yet there is something about Gravity Falls that has caught my attention...)

Emmy award winning, Speilberg produced Animaniacs? With all the pop culture referencing and illicit innuendo that went way over the heads of children? Giving adults a reason to enjoy the series? We've obviously watched very different versions of Animaniacs lols

Yeah, but 'Megabyte' of today is upgraded to Gigabyte.

Come to think of it, back in these days, PCs were running off Pentium II's and RAM was 128MB with a HHD of 700MB.

Xiaolin Showdown: Great characters and in my opinion a kick ass plot.

Jackie Chan Adventures: great lightheated fun.

Time Squad: Been too long since I watch this show, but I remember loving it dearly.

Danny Phantom: Ever deepining story and a great villain in Vlad Plasmius shame creative differences between the people working on it cause the show to end early.

T.M.N.T: which I thought was amazing because of how dark it was, and the chances it took especially with the alternate future where everyone died.

Megas XLR: Hilarious gem of pop culture/mecha goodness.

Kim Possible: A very well put together animated offering from Disney.

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Just. Watch. It.

Generator Rex and Ben 10: I feel like I am the only person who likes Ben 10.

To me these shows prove that they power that be are still trying, but it is tough to compete In my opinion with eastern offerings. Why put the money forward for expensive quality animation when you can just license anime that is already done. We have been doing that since at least the 80's but I think the it is more prevalent now. We must find a way to free ourselves from out dependence on foreign cartoons.

Oh, the nostalgia. Everything is true. I don't let my little brother watch cartoons anymore because they're so awful (with a few exceptions). I make him watch old ones.

Avatar and Spectacular Spider-Man were awesome.

Has anybody else seen Extreme Dinosaurs? That show was so extremely manly, I loved it when I was little.

I really hope they don't cancel this series like they did with Animated to make room for the bay movies,Prime is the best cartoon since Beast Wars and I really don't want to see go under.Speaking of Beast Wars,it would be great if they could put that back on the air.

A shame they don't air any older cartoons, only ones I know of that they show are Batman: TAS/Beyond, PPG, Dexter's lab, Scooby doo, looney tunes. Probably am missing a few, but rather surprised however that they show Batman: TAS but not Superman: TAS.

Good to know that the show is still going on. Also, I didn't know Animated was ended because of the Bay movies - I thought the show had legitimately ended because Megatron and all the Decepticons were taken prisoner in the end, the Allspark was placed back together and returned, etc. I don't see what else they could have done, except for like the explanation of where Sari's protoform came from. But yeah, Prime is a great show. It's my second favorite next to Beast Wars - and to be honest, the way it's going it may soon overtake Beast Wars as my favorite.

And speaking of Bay movies, I just realized that the fourth movie is coming out on the 30th anniversary of the Transformers franchise. So now, I really hope that he works to make sure the fourth movie is good enough to be something that would feel like it's celebrating 30 years of Transformers.

I know they did cancel the show it was revealed at bot con 2009,I think they rushed the last few episodes I certainly think they where gonna do more with it and do another season.I think it was because of the movie been released,I thought it was the reason but its not definite, though I think that could be a distinct possibility.Im really liking Prime too,Ive heard alot of hate for Megatron but he is my favourite version of him from the cartoons so far,and it proves Welker still has it.

So the fourth movie is confirmed,I do hope the fourth movie is good, though I have my doubts,I mean Bay said DOTM was his last one then here he is making this one.Who knows we could end up seeing six of them.I don't hate the movies because there not G1 enough or anything silly like that. But because they aren't good films, well not good transformer films at least anyway.

Ah. That does make sense actually, because the plot for the last episode did feel a little rushed - primarily how Prowl and Jazz just did that one thing to bring the Allspark back together at the last minute. Yeah, I also love Welker's voice as Megatron in this show. I hear Soundwave will actually speak at some point during season 2; I wonder if Welker will be voicing him as well.

To be fair, even though I enjoyed the movies, I understand the reasons people hated them. The only thing I don't get is the degree to which people hate them. People seem to treat them like they're the worst movies ever made even though, going by scores on Rotten Tomatoes, there are tons of movies which are far worse than any of them. Like, of the three movies, Revenge of the Fallen got the lowest RE score at 20%. Ghost Rider 2, Dragonball Evolution, and The Last Airbender are all movies that got a lower score than that, and yet I don't see anyone cursing those movies as being the worst movies ever made, but I'll see like a million people bashing Bay and the Transformers movies as though they are the greatest affront to mankind.

Ren and Stimpy was a stupid show. How insulting. Courage the Cowardly Dog was fantastic.

I know it pains me when I hear people say "Michael Bay raped my childhood",alright his movies aren't great films, they aren't great Transformer films either.Perhaps it was because fans had been waiting so long for a live action Transformers movie and it turned out to be a disappointment. But I agree that there is alot of hate and they aren't the worst films ever made, there are some amazing special effects, action scenes, sounds music and I dig the robot designs too.
