BLOG: Mafia: Game of Thrones - Game Building

No Caption Provided

Introduction

There are a lot of Mafia games going on in the Battle Forum of Comic Vine. There have been comics, video game, cartoon, anime versions until now. In one of those games one player gave the idea of a Mafia version of Game of Thrones (GOT) and I liked the idea.

I'm creating this blog post to talk about how we can create a Mafia game that really reflects the Game of Thrones. I decided to do it on public so every player and host can work together on it. I hope viners help with ideas, critics, balance and all. I never read the books that inspired the series (A song of Ice and Fire), so this will be based on the HBO series.

This is not a sign-up thread. This is not a game thread. It's a discussion thread to build the game rules and mechanics. There is a list with 10+ mafia games that are waiting to start, so we need to respect it, also because of this we don't need to hurry about it. Let's take our time and learn with old and new experiences.

In the case that we decide that we can't create a Mafia game that do justice to GOT, at least this thread will give us new ideas for other games.

Game Building

Rules

I don't see any reason to change the rules from the previous game. I already updated them to rule some problems that we had on recent games, like deleting posts on the main thread. You can check them all bellow: but fell free to suggest a rule change or a new rule.

- Before the game starts the host must ask for the moderators to check if there are any alternative accounts of the involved players.

- If the player sign up, the player must play. If the player miss two nights without PMing the host, or being active in the thread, or being active at all, the player will be eliminated. This will not be broadcast, but the player will be "written out".

- No posting screenshots to prove roles, or for any other purpose. It breaks the game and makes it less fun.

- It isn't allowed to delete or edit a post.

- Comments that may affect the game from players who died or from non-players viners will be flagged/removed.

- No PMing other players, making secret pacts, reveal roles, etc. This is a rule the host can't really enforce, but it's for the good of the game, and it'd keep the game more interesting and exciting. Please do not ruin this game for others

- If the player vote for lynching, make it very very clear. Write it in huge bolded font.

- If a player knows someone cheated or believe someone cheated send the host a PM about it. Avoid accusing each other on the game thread.

Game Mechanics

The Game starts with a minimum of 25 players. Before the game starts every player will receive a PM from the host with his character on the game and will be added to their respective PM if their characters give them access to one.

In most of previous games there was one single secret PM group that was used by the villains to plan and coordinate their actions during the game. On Marvel vs DC there was no villains, neither secret PM group. To reflect the world of GOT there will be multiple secret PM groups, one for each major Houses (Lannister, Baratheon, Tyrell, Targaryen) and one for the Night Watch, with the possibility to create other groups during the game (Stark, two players PM). The new PM groups can only be create as consequences of the game (abilities) and will be created by the host only. Every PM groups will work like the villains PM on previous games.

Every House, group or independent character has a specific goal on the game and can use any strategy that suit them if it doesn't break the rules.

As usual the game will start with a post from the host on the main thread. The game begins on night time. There is no killing on the first night and every game period after a "king" (more on characters) dies.

The game is divided on two time periods: Night and Day. During the night the host will RNG the House and the player that will be the killer of the night. During the day the players will debate and vote if they want to lynch any player or not and which player on the main thread. The difference on the GOT Mafia is that the player voted to be lynched can PM the host to reveal his/her character and start a "Trial by Combat".

Every character has a chance to win a Trial by Combat that chance appears as a percentage on the character description going from 10% to 90%. Once the character is revealed the host will RNG one of the players that voted on the revealed player and will announce the name of the characters involved on the Trial by Combat. Next the host will RNG (considering their winning percentage) the winner of the combat and will announce the result on the main thread. The name of the player RNG to the trial will only be revealed if he/she lose the combat, otherwise the identity will remain hidden.

The Days and Nights will end with a post from the host on the main thread revealing what happened during that time period. The host will use George R.R. Martin (author of A song of ice and fire) as the voice that reveals the events of the Day and Night. They will have a duration of approximately 16 hours. The Days can be shortened if there if a majority of votes are reached and the Nights can be shortened as well if all players PM their abilities to the host.

Every character has at least one ability, active (need to send a PM to the host to use it) or passive (works all time). There are some characters that have more than one ability. Also, there are abilities that only work during Night and others that only work during Day. The character abilities are explained on the character description.

The game ends when one of the Houses or one player fulfills the winning condition that make impossible to others accomplish their own.

Characters

I think this is the part that will take more time and that we will discuss more. You can disagree, suggest new characters, new abilities. Don't be shy. This section will be construct little by little.

The characters will be divided by their groups. Some of them are considered basic characters which means that they must appear in every game, also there are "leaders" of their Houses that can only be killed by players that know their identities. A "King" is a character from a major House that must remain alive until the end of the game for that House conquer the iron throne and win the game. A notable characters is one that will have his identity revealed when he/she dies.

I'll try to give each House one ability.

We can also discuss how much characters from each group must appear for the sake of game balance.

BLOG: Game rules and mechanics - Mafia: Cartoons edition 2.0

No Caption Provided

The following game was tested on the battle forum of Comicvine. The rules and mechanics are fruits from the host and players analysis. This is not a game or a sign-up thread. This blog post were made to share the game with people that might be interested in play in any forum or just pick some ideas from it and use it on their own game.

HOW THE GAME WORKS

The game game starts with 20 players minimum. The character distribution will be approximately 50% heroes, 25% villains and 25% wildcards.

There are 3 characters category: villains, heroes and wildcards.

The villains will be added in a secret PM on which they will know it other (the host won't reveal their roles in the secret PM) and decide together what they are going to do in the game. Their goal is to eliminate the heroes and some wildcards characters that might be a problem.

The heroes need to somehow work together to eliminate the villains and some wildcards characters that might be a problem but they don’t know each other, neither have a PM for their own.

Each of the wildcards characters has it unique goal and winning condition. Neither knows each other nor has a PM for their own.

The host will send a PM with a role to every player, after that the game will start. During the night the villains will decide which player they want to kill and all characters with an active ability can PM the host if they want to use their ability. If a character doesn’t send a PM during the night time it won’t use its ability. The players with active ability must send a PM to the host until 3 hours before the end of the night.

In the end of the night time there will be a post made by the host that will describe what happened during that night. And with that the day time will start.

On day time the players will debate what they should do. There is always the possibility of lynching one of the players but it’s not an obligation. The player with most votes will be lynched. As well as the night time, the day time will end with a post of the host that will start the next night.

(The host can use as many narrators as it want to describe the events of the day/night.Examples: Shiro Shinobi [A:LoK], Cuber [Adventure Time], Narrator (PPG), Ronaldo Fryman [Steven Universe]...)

The game ends when one of the parties or one player fulfills the winning condition.

RULES

Note: Upgrade can override the recharge time of any ability.

Drawback: Sometimes the omnitrix won’t work as he wants (every time the player choose to use one ability the host must run a RNG with numbers from 1 to 11. If the result is 11 the ability won't work. To every ability that worked add one more number for the drawback possibility).

Finn, the Human (Adventure Time)

Although at times violent and aggressive, Finn is a brave and righteous boy. His aspirations to become a great hero makes him somewhat of a moral sheriff in the Land of Ooo, as he is willing to help and protect any innocent person or creature. Finn is also almost incapable of doing anything evil or unjust, and will struggle greatly against doing such things like killing a neutrally aligned ant.
