What a kick in the nuts...

I’m not going to mention any names, or even the pages I’m referring to, but there’s nothing more annoying than someone racking up more wiki points than you in 5 minutes, when you’ve spent months scanning images and trying your best not to add duplicates. This is the second time this has happened in the last month, someone has just added about 100 images to a gallery and not bothered to check if they’re already there! It’s not like it’s a major character with thousands of pages to trawl through either. On another page, where I added about 90% of the images, someone came along and created a pointless gallery and added all of my images to it and overtook me!

I don’t do this for the points, I’m not exactly the top editor on many pages (maybe a couple of obscure ones), I just enjoy contributing to Comic Vine, but it still feels like a kick in the nuts every time this happens.

Please do name names. We can't be everywhere, galleries in particular are getting difficult to regulate so a heads up to a mod would help us keep that kind of activity minimized.

@aztek the lost:@Shatterstar:
I wouldn’t want anybody to get into trouble if it was just an honest mistake and they weren’t familiar with the rules. I’m just looking at a batch of photos and 11 of them I recognize immediately and know for a fact they are already in the gallery (and better quality). One of the pictures is even my scan! I know this because I changed the colour of the background, all they’ve done is crop it slightly.

The thing is it’s not even that big of a gallery, I could understand if they were Batman pictures or something, but it would take less than 5 minutes to check this page.

Anyway, I’d rather PM one of yous than name them in the forums.

@ViperPilot: If it's not that big of a gallery, then the person probably should have taken the time to go through it or at the very least scan it. You're talking about at least a dozen photos that you can immediately pick out, which means that they should have been able to find them just as easily. Adding duplicate images is against the rules and is a way that a lot of people point spam.

sucks. i quit contributing to image galleries because i saw gaggles of full page to page comic scans being uploaded,
and every image i uploaded, cleaned of words and what not in Photoshop to make it more presentable and unique
to comicvine was downloaded then reuploaded right after i put it in their. that whole thing was too degrading to even bother
spending my effort on, sadly as its the reason i came on board cv in the first place.

Again, please point out those breaking the rules and we will deal with them.
The image galleries have really got out of hand lately, but we're doing out best to keep them clean. Help is appreciated.

just got to tiring. though i encourage anyone still contributing to follow that advice.
a friend here said this to me about that.

I hate to say it, but I think part of the problem is the Photoshopped Quest.  Instead of encouraging people to spam the galleries, I wish there was something / someway to encourage people to read the rules about the images allowed in the galleries.  I don't usually mod images, but the last couple of times I did it, all four rules were ignored repeatedly and there were duplicated images.

I agree with that. I believe that there was an influx of plagiarism with the Major Fan and Tactical Nuke quests, as well. I know that a few of the mods aren't very keen about quests that require you to add stuff to the wikis, because frankly, editing is not for everybody.
The thing with modding images is that it doesn't actually take anything out of the moderator queue. You could deny everything and the actual mods would still have to approve it before it actually happened.

I'd agree as well, the wiki quests have almost all had unintentional negative consequences. Filling in pages with no images was probably safe but the tactical nuke resulted in a load of plagiarism and bannings, the other image quests might be causing an influx of dupes... we need quests fueled by tasks in the wiki, thats pretty much the best way to regulate it imo.

Yep, that's true.  But every image I flagged as 'disapproved' did not appear in the gallery, when I checked it.  The one full page scan I did not see / mod,  turned up approved in the gallery.  When I disapproved anything, I posted why in the comment box, which might have helped.
