Captain America vs. Wolverine (Three-Page Fights)

In the goal of improving my own sequential-art skills, I've decided to start drawing three-page fights. The idea is to draw a battle in three pages alone, using zero dialogue.

Without further ado, here is my first attempt, featuring Captain America going up against Wolverine on the rooftops of New York!

Page One
Page Two
Page Three

I tried to give both Cap and Logan a fair amount of jabs in the fight. And yes I know, Wolverine fans, Logan would maul Cap in a straight-up fight, put down those claws! This is just for practice.

As always, my scanner (or my pencil graphite I guess) is kinda meh, so the quality is a little weird. I know I've made some mistakes here, so all comments and criticisms are welcome.

Bad. Ass. I like it.

You might even consider making it interactive, having votes to see who is involved or who wins or whatnot.

Vesharks 3 page slam bam fight of the week (or whatever time frame suits you.)

These are awesome man! Their lips are a little bit off though.

These are good man.

The truest thing to it we shall ever see

This is awesome. You could go really far with something like this -- it is the event ComicVine wants, if not the one it deserves.

Good work. Images with a lot of motion are, imo, the hardest thing to draw.

@veshark: Finally I can see it. Good job, you made it better by adding the pages.

Edited by Veshark

@risingbean Thanks man. Ha, that would be a cool idea, unfortunately the time it takes me to draw three pages is way too long! My output for these are going to be erratic at best.

@rustyroy Thank you, and yeah, I get what you mean. I'll keep that in mind next go around.

@shadowswordmaster @voodoo2 @deaditegonzo Thanks a lot for commenting!

@joygirl Thank you! An event? I don't quite follow :O

@themanintheshoe Hah yeah took me long enough huh? Thanks for the kind words man.

Great Job :)

Pros:

  • The detail on these guys is great. Love the attention to detail of their damage from the fight.
  • Drawing is great.
  • Structure of the models is great

Cons:

  • Faces can look awkward at some points.
  • The motion can look stiff (Like when Cap is hitting Wolverine with his shield)

Other than that, this is amazing. Good job :)

really enjoyed it, although there was some facial expressions that didn't look good.

the fight's choregraphy was perfect, and the small references you placed were a nice idea

Posted by Veshark

@limpoyzloan Thanks for the constructive criticism and compliments! Yeah, some of the facial expressions were executed a little weirdly, I'll keep that in mind. Appreciate the comments.

@clemj Hah, you're the first one to mention the references! Thanks for commenting.

@veshark: this is pretty good man. I like this idea a lot too. your arts pretty good, I can spot a few flaws but in my opinion recognizing your flaws help you get better. I wont get into my thoughts on cap vs wolvie ( because its happened.... several times) overall I think this is great and I hope to see more soon. id also like to see you try inking sometime. only advice I can offer is to keep practicing, and maybe find an anatomy book somewhere. just to help with proportions and poses and all that. :)

@veshark: like @risingbean: said, if you had people vote on fights and made it a regular thing, I could see 3PB becoming a wild sensation overnight. Kinda like k4tz's matches or something like that.

Oh alright, well that would be a really cool idea, I guess. I could have a poll for the next battle to draw I suppose.

@veshark: @joygirl:

Veshark's trice yearly fight of the night! Put your nominations in now, Folks!

Edit. Remodeled that to not suck.

@veshark: Full of action! The way I personally prefer comics to be. Great job. Post more please.

@veshark: Well, yeah....I was complementing you, lol. :D Seriously though, this is really great work. The action, layout, and shading are absolutely perfect. There are a few weird looking faces and poses, but most of that could be fixed by an inker. Otherwise this is about as close as I've seen to professional work on the Artist Show-Off board. Keep up the great work!!!

Thank you, means a lot to me. Yeah there are lots of spots where I could've worked on more, but I'm glad you liked it :)

Wow! These are great! How long did it take you? There are some great details that really bring the panels to life! I'd say just work on your proportions and your poses. In the panels where you see Wolverine head butting Cap the heads are completely different sizes. It's most noticeably in the last panel. But really these are great! Keep it up. I love all the background details as well as all the details in their suites. Well done!

Thank you. Um honestly around three weeks, mostly because I kept taking breaks in between pages, and overall lazy days prevented me from making good progress on occasion. And good eye, I did notice the size discrepancy with the heads in the final panel when I finished, but I figured given the panel's perspective, most wouldn't notice it ;) Appreciate the support!

Good work but there is no way Wolvie beats Cap if Cap has his shield. No way.

Posted by HeraldofGanthet

@veshark:

You've got a real smooth flow to your style, the way his thumbnails do. Again, good job man.

There is a lot that is good here, the main things I would work on is fine tuning anatomy and playing with dramatic angles more. The story reads and flows well, so that you don't have to worry about. Textures are also good. Overall your figures are pretty solid, but little things like face symmetry and proportions- eyes at the halfway point of the head etc, keep this stuff at the front of your mind. As for angles, imagine the second panel on the first page rotated 30 degrees to the right... Now Cap is really leaning over Wolvie, the hit feels that much harder, and that power becomes part of the story you're telling. Your torsos are "thick" for Comic trends, they don't narrow at the waits much, but than again, that just means they look like actual strongmen as opposed to body builders.

Edited by Veshark

@blackdog2009 Haha thanks for the comment!

@heraldofganthet Appreciate it, HoG.

@stambo42 Mm I'll definitely keep the facial symmetry and anatomy in mind next go around, thanks for the advice. Glad that the story didn't come across as confusing though, though I do see your point regarding that second panel. Thank you for the comment!

Also, did you draw your profile pic? You look like you've had formal art training.

Posted by SmashBrawler

Excellent stuff. In terms of criticism I got nothing to add apart of what's been said already but this is pretty damn good.

I'd be interested in seeing a superpowered beatdown for the next one, to see how you'd tackle that.

Thank you. Superpowered meaning powerhouse-level characters? I'll definitely keep that in mind ;)

@veshark: You're welcome. And yeah, something like Superman vs. Zod, Thor vs. Hulk, you get my drift.

Edited by stambo42

@veshark: Haha, yes I did draw my profile pic, and yes I did go to art school, but It's hard to say I had formal training. They taught me how to talk and defend myself, and gave me space to develop ideas. There are places you can still go to get Academic art training, the there is illustration school, but I went to neither of these. Most of my drafting and rendering skill is training I've given myself. In high school I took classes with the guy who painted the tristar Pegasus and I once modeled for a portrait artist named Daniel Greene. Neither of these represented the kind of rigor that goes into formal Academic schooling, but I learned a lot through observation.

This is really great stuff, dude!

@veshark: Pretty good. Kinda reminded me a little of Bryan Hitch. Is that what you were going for?

Posted by patzello

@veshark: Your page transitions are very good. The action follows through nicely from one page to the next.

Do not be afraid to exagerate the movement to emphasise that there is action going on. The "art" comes in with finding a balance between exagerating and overexagerating.

I think you are on the right path, though. And I also think that @joygirl is on to a good idea. If you start a regular series that people are involved in and you know you have others expecting you to produce, it may be the right motivation you want/need to give you motivation. Really, it seems like you have most of the mechanics down. The only thing that you need from here is to work your style. The only thing you meed to do that is regularly, consistantly producing and practicing.

You just got my follow.

Edited by Veshark

@stambo42 Wow, very impressive stuff indeed.

@innervenom123 Thanks!

@noj Damn, that is the greatest comment you could give to me as an artist. Hitch is my favorite penciller. Made my day :)

@patzello Mm I'll definitely keep the dynamism in mind. Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely consider it. And followed back.
