The sun was just moments from breaking the horizon, and once again darkness would give way to the light of morning.  Shortly the streets would be full of traffic, the sidewalks full of people making their way to wherever they had to be.  But at the moment there were only the sounds of a city not quite fully awake.  On the top floor of the Connors Building there is a large office and in that office a desk made of solid oak  The desk was a father son project from years before. He and his father worked on the desk together and was sort of a father's day gift. The chair was turned with its back facing the door.  In the chair sits a man, who is deep in thought.  There is only silence in the room and the only light in the room will come through the window when the sun makes its appearance.  The man seems to draw strength from the silence, its at these times of seclusion when he faces the truth of his life, and when he can let down his guard.  It is when he can be himself, with no responsibility, no one to impress or answer to.  No questions to answer, no issues to solve.  Its during these times he faces the truth of being alone, truly alone.  His name is Joe Connors.

Several hours later he snaps out of his trance state and realizes he missed seeing another sun rise.  He shakes his head and thinks to himself, oh well, missed another one.  He hears the familiar sound of heels clicking on the tile floor and knows his assistant Jessica will be in his office in just a moment.  Just then she steps through the door.  The first thing she does is put her hand on her hip, a sign she does not approve of him spending another sleepless night in his office.  Her second action is to cut on the light and step further into the office. As she walks toward him she asks,

( Jessica) another sleepless night

(Joe) sleep is overated

(Jessica)  Oh so now your a doctor....
She shakes her head letting him know she does not approve of the way he does not take care of himself.

At first Joe does not even look around at her, but then he knows his time of serenity is over so he stands up and walks toward the window.  He is still wearing his business suit, with his tie loosely around his neck.  He puts his hands into his pants pockets and lets out a deep breath.  The weight and responsibility of running his father's company is showing more on him each day.  If it was just the company he would be fine, but Joe had more serious things on his mind.  He could not stop thinking about the accident that killed his parents.  Somehow he felt there was more to the story than he was told, but there was no evidence to suggest it was anything other than a tragic accident.

Then he became aware of an arm wrapped around his waist,  It was Jessica, she had moved over to him and wanted to help him somehow, but helping him was not an easy task.  Joe had hardly ever opened up to anyone.  There were times she felt he was about to confide in her, but then he would pull away and change the subject.  They just stood still and looked out the window

Slowly Joe turned his head around and looked down at his assistant.  Why she took all the crap from him he did not fully understand.  Sure he paid her well, very well.  She would never want for anything as long as he was around.  Plus her salary was very generous.  To say she was beautiful was such an understatement.  Her long hair draped over her shoulders and she had the prettiest smile he had ever seen.  Her blue eyes could cut right through you.  They sparkled when she was happy, and glared when she was angry.  One look from her could silence a room full of executives.  She had a quick wit and no one had ever gotten the best of her in a duel of words. Her clothes seemed to be tailor made and showed off her curves in a way that made men pause and stare when she walked by.  With her looks and intelligence she could have been anything she wanted to be, yet she was here working for him.  In her he had found someone he could rely on, someone he could trust, a true friend.

A loud ringing started to sound out and Joe reached in his pocket and answered his phone.  He said barely a word as he listened to whoever had called.  When the call ended he showed no emotion on his face.  She could not tell if the news was good, bad, or whatever.  When Joe hung up he said to her in a low voice, cancel todays appointments and grap your laptop, were going to Chicago.   No time to pack a bag, we will buy clothes and whatever you need once we get there.

She knew better than to protest.  So she hurried to her office to get what she could as he was already walking toward the elevator.
