Exactly! I purchased Y: The Last Man book 1 hardcover edition and man it was great I'm so glad I picked it up. I'm now waiting for book 2.
Book 2 has been out for a long while. just depends on where you are going to get it.
I do this fairly regularly with trades, but no so much single issues. It's a bigger up front investment, but I get a (more) complete story and I don't run the risk of adding another book to a pull that's already too full. I prefer trades in general anyway. They arrange better on a shelf.
Getting a trade of a series that is ongoing is fine if they are up to issue 2. but if its a new series on the rack around issues 2 or 3. just pick up the first issue first 2 issues. worst case scenario you paid $7 for two singles that you did not like Vs a $15-20 book you did not like.
The only reason I get trades is for old series that don't exist anymore, and omnibuses and essentials of those super old series.. other than that. I stay on top of single issues that come out.
What gets me though is I get customers who come into the store, look at the first issue of the comic and say hey this story looks cool and the art is good but tell me they will wait for trade.....and you wonder with a mentality like that, most independent series are only limited.
There is 10 times better stories out there besides from the big two. Valiant, IDW, Dynamite, Red5, Darkhorse, Oni Press, and many others... im reluctant to say Image. Archer and Armstrong is one of my favs, Flash Gordon Zeitgeist, ,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Atomic Robo, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Helheim / Sixth Gun, Those are some great stories just to name a few. There are comcis litterally for just about any genre, get them while they are in singles so you can help support the industry and create that demand to make trades. if there is no demand, no trades are made.
