4/6/2014 Ame-Comi Girls (volume 1) Review

Alright, just finished reading Volume 1 of "Ame-Comi Girls". I picked it up at the book store when I saw it by chance. I had seen random panels and fan art of the Comi Girls on Deviant Art and various other websites and grew a little curious. Hadn't intended on going to look for it, it was more of one of the 'keep in the back pocket' kind of series.

Anyway, found it by chance and decided to give it a read.

Honestly, it took me a little while to get through. Three months actually. Started reading it when I got home, got distracted by the T.V. you know the drill. Picked it up a few weeks later but forgot what I read so had to start over. Before I knew it months had passed. Decided to bring it on a trip to my sisters graduate school SO finally sat down with nothing else to do and got through it.

So far I am not really impressed.

Personally, my favorite reads are the ones that are based on a female protagonist. Call me sexist but I would much rather watch a hot babe be awesome then a guy do his thing. But that's just me. So as I picked this up I was expecting to be ecstatic reading something that is 97% female and 3% male, unfortunately not so much.

I am a stickler for substance. If the writing is not 80% mystery 20% action I am usually not interested. So far this series seems to be (in a nut shell) the DC world, turned semi female, introducing characters really fast, trying to get them all together in a hurry so the artists can show what they look like in anime style. I love anime style, it's all I talked about in high school but art style shouldn't be the main point of a comic. My Comic Scripting professor always told us, "if the art is the best part of a comic, it wasn't a good comic." Not sure if I already quoted him in another review but who cares, it applies to this too.

I want soooooo bad to love this series but I don't : ( wish I did, but don't.

Alright so a few more things that bugged me;

The art and line work were inconsistent at times. Especially in small frame/panel areas. (if characters got smaller, line got sloppier)

It was difficult to grasp character identity if the characters were otherwise not introduced. (Meaning the relation between original DC characters and these female counterparts at times were unclear.)

Side annoyance, Introduction of Natasha aka Steel has a skin color error which bugged me a bit.

The story and the action was fun but a few times led to some confusing transitions. Whether it was a fight sequence with difficult to follow strikes, or a story line that opened to an unsure location or time frame, it required a little outside thought to regroup.

And forget it, if you are not familiar with the DC original characters you would be totally lost.

HOWEVER, it wasn't all negatives. I'm not going to thrash this story with the things I don't like then not mention a few things that I actually thought was fairly clever. For one, I must say Robin was my favorite. Usually I am a Catwoman girl but Robin was so beautifully drawn and so spunky that I have to say she stole the limelight for me.

Brainiac's recreation was immaculate (loved the aliens, sexy and dangerous. Gotta love it.)

Wonder Woman's facial expressions and reactions towards men was killer funny, I could really sympathize with her emotion being forced to wear an even MORE revealing outfit just to be given the chance to speak. Maybe 'sympathize' isn't the best word, but what I'm trying to say is her artist did a great job bringing that emotion to life. Felt very applicable.

In closing, I might consider reading another volume. Perhaps if something in the next one jumps out at me as a must read I will give it a go. But like I said earlier, this series is more of a 'keep in the back pocket.' kind of series. By all means though, check it out! You might like it and think maybe I am being too harsh, it's all in the eyes of the reader.

10/17/2013 Catwoman (1989 mini series 1-4)

How could I NOT go out and buy this 1 of 4 mini series? Doesn't matter because I DID!!!

I love this series, I ordered the complete set off of MyComicShop. Where I get most my older comics, the comic stores near my home really only stock up to date comics and very few back issues. I'll put the website link and the end of this review if anyone is interested in checking it out.

OK! Spoilers below!

In a nut shell, volume one was about how Selina Kyle became Catwoman after getting beat up by a gross man (her pimp) named Stan. Someone who ironically hates cats. By the end she pars up with a brute called Ted who teaches her how to fight and defend herself. He basically gives her the knowledge she needs to survive in Gotham. Oh right and she kicks Stan's ass of course. Volume two, surprise surprise kicking Stan's ass is not enough. Catwoman is now being trailed by a detective and a nun as she searches for Stan when she catches wind that he kidnapped her sister, Sister Magdalene or Maggie.Volume three, Catwoman is ready for revenge! AND not only is the gotham police on her trail, but the Batman as well. Selina gets a call from Stan who is mocking Holly (her roommate) about having a nun. After a long questioning from the brutish police force Catwoman manages to find Stan and fight him in a wear house. Maggie is pushed over a railing and saved by Batman, while Stan falls to his death. Volume four, Selina considers burning her Catsuit because she views Catwoman as a murderer. However she gets her spark back when cute little Holly appears in church beaten and bleeding after being abused by Captain Strunt (a decorated veteran) After she gets no help from the detective Flannery she puts on the cat suit once again to do some detective work of her own. Catwoman finds the Captain at home and before her hurts him too bad Batman stops her. They have a fun little back and forth chit chat on the roof before Catwoman declares their game as begun, kisses him, knocks his ass down and vanishes.

NOW MY REVIEW!

This series was fun and exciting. Probably my favorite origin personally. I love how they developed her character from a prostitute who has had enough and finally fights back. I also adore the guest appearance of Batman, the chemistry between the caped crusader and the feline fatal has always been my favorite. Defiantly a must read if you are a Catwoman lover!!! Or wanna be Catwoman lover.

10/16/2013 "The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide" 43rd Edition

Finally! Just got my copy of "The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide" 43rd Edition 2013-2014. I still very much consider myself a comic virgin. Getting to know the history more has been both exciting and frustrating. So this is my first pricing guide, very cool.

As I started to read the introduction to the guide, I recalled reading reviews regarding controversial topics. MOSTLY they were complaints about the book not being accurate on prices or not taking all buying and selling resources into account (such as internet and private buyers). All I can say is that is complete bunk. This book as so many resources listed (everything between Web Articles to Public Auctions) that I can tell why it took so many people to put it together. They even have a Directory Listing that starts on page 1076, there is an incredible amount of recorded resources. Now regarding the prices not being "accurate", if they actually read the mini comic introduction starting on page 65 they clearly state the book is just a "guide" meaning it assists sellers and collectors on pricing. In other words, its a suggestion- not written in stone.

I really like this book, hopefully with a lot of study time I can become a good Comic Appraiser/ Grader.

The only negative about this book is there are SO MANY ADS! Serious I have never seen so many ads, it is actually kind of creepy the tone some of the ads take. For example on the back cover the advertiser actually brags about paying $30,000 just for the ad on the book, all in an attempt to get you to sell to him knowing he is a wealthy person. And that is not even the worst ad, most list out all the past purchases they made that year, some spending over 1.2million. Not sure where the money comes from but most of the ads come on very strong, almost desperate in my opinion.

Anywho, I would completely recommend this book if you are a professional or starting out comic collector or enthusiast. It is a great reference and fun read.

8/8/2013 BEST BATMAN INTRODUCTION EVER "The Poison Tomorrow"

Officially my favorite Batman introduction that I have read so far! In the Comic, Batman Green Arrow in "The Poison Tomorrow" by Dennis O'Neil Michael Netzer and Jow Rubinstien!!!

Page One:

Caption "I is cold here, and dark, and the moan of the wind outside mingles with the crash of a steel blade biting into wood and glass, and the panting of a desperate man... Then, there is another sound...a Voice that is Quiet and Commanding--"

Batman "Put It Down! ... Now!"

I almost put down the comic just because he said to hahaha, pretty epic when a drawing on a piece of paper can tell you want to do. lol Sharing the nerd moment!

Anyone else have a favorite introduction/ entrance of a comic character?

6/6/13 Katana #1-2 Review

To begin with I was SUPER excited to hear Katana had gotten her own series. I knew her back story was a classic and it honestly deserved a closer look it today's new 52. The premise alone is really cool, martial arts and revenge, how can you go wrong?! I guessed it was going to be another really popular series AND a super cool read!

(Great background Spoiler Here) http://www.comicvine.com/katana/4005-9547/

So I just finished reading numbers 1 and 2, sadly I am not blown away. The writing was good but maybe I am disappointed because it wasn't what I was expecting. Ann Nocenti is a talented writer but it was sort of hard to decipher the captions used in the series, which does distract from the story. The more time you spend going "wait wha?" the less time you spend enjoying the story.

On a lighter note, the art was pretty cool. Where it wasn't the common new 52 art style that we are all use to seeing, the more I read the more I started to like it. It was very sketchy and had a lot of Asian influence which DUH worked with the story! However my professors always taught me, 'If the best part of a story is the art then....well enough said.'. I would like to continue with this series because I am a huge Katana fan. Also this is just the beginning so the potential is still there.

Branching Out

OK! In an attempt to try and expand my comics library, I picked up something random in the Marvel section of the comic store.

(Quick Recap: I am mostly a DC reader and only really delve in the Batman universe. This is not on purpose or because I hate everything else. It is just because it is the first issues I was introduced to thus a beginners favorite. Long live the dark detective.)

ANYWAY! The issue I picked up 'lucky for me' was in a complete set 5 of 5. The art work drew me to it at first 'just being honest! Cover art is bangin!'. ANY-WHOOOOO the series I grabbed is called Realm Of Kings- INHUMANS. Now I am completely new to this and have no idea what I am about to get into.

Alright, first impression on issue 1-2 (stopped at 3) "Holy shit! Sooooooo much dialog!" Now this is not totally a bad thing in MY case because the more dialog, the more info I get AND the faster I catch up. Down side is "sooooooo much dialog!", because this is a issue 1 as a reader I am expecting to be able to pick it up from the beginning and follow along with ease and enjoyment. Where I did enjoy it, I honestly struggled to catch onto the settings and establish a main point of contact. There is also SO much name dropping and references to the Avenger series it became obvious rather quickly that these issues broke off from one or more other issues. Don't get me wrong, this is OK but I am just saying from my perspective I would like to pick up a random number issue and be able to grasp the story quickly and with little effort.

Now this is completely my fault as well, I played Russian Ru-let and took the bullet to the face! HOWEVER, I don't quit so I am going to keep reading and will put up my thoughts on 3-5 really soon. I am curious to find out it there is going to be a definite ending though since Inhumans seems to be tied to the broader Marvel Universe. Then again does any comic series have an ending? Another thing I love about comics!

(Please if you can leave comments. Tell me if you have read this series and tell me what you think. ALSO I would love new reading suggestions so I can check those out too. Thanks for reading guys!)
