A thousand years ago,

Another thousand years ago,

A thousand THOUSAND years ago (give or take a hundred thousand years)

There was a land nearby the sea,

A land of peace and prosperity,

A land where fish jumped into nets

And riches were plentiful: gold and garnets.

----------

This land (call it Mu if you will)

Was governed by gods from their shrines on the hills

A god of sun, a wind, a god of luck…but above them all an Ocean God, Tla'tia'rpluu

He stilled the waters, brought the fish, and blessed the land of Mu.

------

But from far shores there sailed a band of savages

Blood on their hand, blood on their minds, a trail of cities ravaged.

The people of Mu, pacifistic all, greated them with open arms…

And with open arms they died, their last expressions of alarm.

------

There was no hope for Mu that day

And while the priests did pray

The Gods could do nothing, for what is a god

But a product of the collective minds of MAN?

And in a society without violence, not even gods can fight.

--------

They all died, man woman and child.

The island destroyed, decimated, defiled,

And without worship the gods wasted away…

Without belief there was no power to make them stay

All but Tla'tia'rpluu.

-----------

And on the other side of the world, another city, sunken deep,

In which another god deeply sleeps.

A god of powers beyond comprehension

But which cause mens' minds to break under tension.

---------

And it is said this god, Cthulhu by name,

Emits the essence of dreams in pure

Which when nearby bring prophesies

Though the truth of which? One cannot be sure.

-------

And a thousand years,

A thousand more,

A thousand thousand years,

Cthulhu dreams.

------

And now within the ocean deep (stinking with chemicals, petrol fumes)

From depths where light has never peeked, Tla'tia'rpluu has been exhumed.

He has forgotten Mu, and wonders WHY he came to be

What will tell…a prophesy?

-------

Dreams infiltrate minds of those

Who seek to KNOW

------

Let them draw down to lost R'lyeh

And learn the secrets buried deep

In minds of men or minds of gods

The secrets to be found in sleep.

There are places in the ocean which are barren wastelands, places with less life than the most inhospitable desert. There is no light. The darkness is absolute, not pierced by the stars that render space tolerable to the human eye. There is no sound. For what is there to make any? The waves are so far, far above, and in these cold patches there are no bubbling volcanic vents. The pressure was nightmarish. If a man stepped foot in these waters, he would implode. That was all there was to it. There was no negotiating with tons of water pressing down. This was where the former god known as Tidal Ripple resided, the place he called home.

There were many nicer places even in the depths of the ocean. Tidal Ripple had passed through them, but something never seemed RIGHT. In the waterbound civilizations, Tidal Ripple might have found a home. Above seas…well, best not to go there. But Tidal Ripple cared very little for the people above or below the waterline. They seemed mere shadows of a people lost long, long ago. A people at home on land or sea…but unlike Atlantis, memorialized for eternity these people were slaughtered. Tidal Ripple felt his gills flare in anger at the thought. He still wasn't sure how he related to these people, but they meant the world to him.

Tidal Ripple picked up a rock from by his feet. He knew instinctively that it was a skull, crushed by the enormous pressure. He turned his bulbous eyes skyward, into the blackness of the water above. How had this being died? Had the sea merely seeped into their lungs and made it a part of the enormous tide? Or was there a more grisly tale? He let the skull sink back to the ocean floor, and stood for a moment, wondering at the cruel cosmos.

A small fish, blind and white, swam towards him. Tidal Ripple turned, sparking with bioluminescence, annoyed. The fish pressed on, unseeing. It began to bump into his chest, again and again. Tidal Ripple grabbed it in one webbed hand, noticed that there was something wrapped around the fish. He took it, unfurled the thin piece of a rubbery paper-like substance. It was a note, to him. Tidal Ripple illuminated a fingertip so he could read it in the gloom.

Dear Tidal Ripple. You have been invited to Water Wars, a competition held in the Kingdom of Oceania. We know what has happened to you, and it must be heart wrenching. But you must also feel a sense of uncontrollable anger that you must loose. We invite you to dispel that anger on your opponents. ~Quila~

Tidal Ripple frowned. He had no intention of going to this Kingdom. Though…it was not like he had much better to do. And perhaps this would provide answers of some kind or another. He turned the note over, and saw a highly detailed map. This was where he had to go.

Tidal Ripple kicked once, and began the long journey to shallow waters. Gradually the water lightened, an aquatic dawn. Tidal Ripple had to pause for a moment, let his eyes adjust. Then he struck out south, towards where this Oceania supposedly lay. He got directions from the scents in the water, certain plants that only grow in special parts of the ocean. He did not tire. After his time at the ocean floor, this was nothing.

And then Oceania lay in front of him. Tidal Ripple hesitated. He looked very much human, aside from the greenish tinge of his skin and his bulbous eyes. What was this place actually like? He swam forward, unthinkingly holding out his invitation to the guard that waited at the gate...

Tidal Ripple's leg whipped around, hitting the woman hard in the knee joint. The woman falls like a felled tree. Then he pulled his leg back so he was crouched, froglike, in a battle stance. He dug his fingers into the dusty sand to keep his balance. Then the world seemed to fracture with the green woman's splitting scream. Tidal Ripple's brain seemed to be falling apart, how could anything survive the sound....

Then it ends, and the woman hits the ground, rolling back to her feet. She leapt at Tidal Ripple, and he began to jump at her, but then, again, a roar. Like a tidal wave crashing against the shore, but so much louder! Tidal Ripple froze up, not able to concentrate on jumping, not able to remember to hold his breath.

The woman's elbow hit him squarely in the chest, and he went airborne. The wind whistled by him for a moment as he contorted in the air. Then he crashed into the surf, the waves sweeping his limp figure into deeper waters. He sank to the bottom, stunned. His ribs hurt terribly, and it looked like a few were badly broken. Inhaling deeply, he forced himself back to the surface, and peered over the tops of the waves at the woman. He was not going back to the shore, it was much too painful, much too suffocating. But that didn't mean he couldn't fight.

Tidal Ripple spread his arms wide, and clapped his hands together, pushing water towards the beach. A large wave raced to the shore, at the green woman.

Tidal Ripple pulled himself into a ball in mid-air. He crossed his arms over his head, and tucked his feet into the nooks of his elbows. This contortion was facilitated by his fishy flexibility, as well as the slipperiness of his scaly skin. Still, even protected like this, the impact hurt. He was consoled by the knowledge that the green woman was almost certainly hurting more. As Tidal Ripple hit her, she fell to the ground. Tidal Ripple rolled over her face, and onto the sand, where he uncurled himself from his cannonball. He felt a little dizzy as he stood up, and coughed violently, his jaw at an unnatural angle. The next bucket of water to hit him barely helped. It was time to face the fact that he was running out of air, and out of time.

A few splashes of water were fine when he was mostly standing still, but once he started exerting himself, fighting for all he was worth, every cell in his body started screaming for oxygen. His skin was beginning to dry, becoming slightly sticky in the process, as well as accentuating the smell of fish. As a result, he was covered in sand, which was just making everything worse. Maybe he could get more civilians to throw water onto him? But all of the non-hypnotised had fled as soon as they saw blood and realized that this wasn't a game or a show. And the hypnotized were beginning to tire. But neither they, nor Tidal Ripple, could rest. Not yet.

Tidal Ripple tried to hide his weakness, his shaking limbs and cloudy eyes, as he saw the green woman getting back to her feet. He waited warily for an attack, but none came. The woman was standing stock-still, on guard. Tidal Ripple thought blearily about the best move, then darted forward, feigned an uppercut, then at the last moment dodged down and swung his leg hard at the woman's.
