Terror of the Atomic Skull

I dunno why I was thinking of this, but I just got a fun little idea into my head. If you don't get the list's name reference then read some more Superman comics lol. Well like the name implies the series is about the Atomic Skull, specifically the Joe Martin version and how I would write a comic featuring him. Despite the title, it's also a nod to the cheesy sci-fi movies of old and if I had to describe the tone of this idea, it would be a comic with a lighter tone made in mind in compared to the DCU presented. I think it would work best as an Alt. Universe or Elseworld story than a main universe one.

This list is incomplete and more will be added later to it.

List items

  • Joesph Martin, aka the Atomic Skull. He is the title character and main hero of the series. A college student who loves old cheesy films was living an easy going life, until he came across the Intergang. Accidentally stumbling into a smuggling operation in the Suicide Slums, Joe is captured and beaten by Bruno "Ugly" Mannheim and Whisper A'Daire with their thugs. Leaving his body at a STAR Labs test sight of a new nuclear device, the device detonates as scheduled and Joe is caught in the blast radius and exposed to a high level of nuclear power. Miraculously surviving, he awakes to find himself inside STAR Labs, being monitored by the scientist there finding that his skin has turned transparent and that he's now in a specialized container suit. After finding his way out and stopping another operation by using his new found powers, he declares himself the Atomic Skull, in honor of an old movie serial he used to watch and becomes a new hero for Metropolis.

  • The scientist in charge of the STAR Labs experiment which gave birth to Joe Martin's powers. He operates as Atomic Skull's adviser and monitor of his powers which according to Michaels have only begun to manifest themselves. Will he eventually gain his own powers? Cause you know scientist and labs aren't exactly a good combination......

  • Another scientist at STAR Labs, and she's considered a a young genius in the field of robotics and nano-robotics and had a hand in designing the containment suit Joe Martin wears. Despite her intellect, she a fairly lively person with a taste for the retro, a strong opposite of the older, and more conservative Albert Michaels. At first while she's kind to Joe, the two eventually develop feelings for each other, but how can you be with a person who's touch is deadly?

  • The Daily Planet's Star reporter and more often than not Atomic Skull's biggest critic. Not that she hates Joe, it's that she wants him to improve on being a hero and hopes as he grows not only in power but control of his abilities as well. Most would consider her a "b*tch" but she pays them no mind, cause it's her job to report the truth and give her honest opinions on the matter.

  • The Owner of the Daily Planet, after his uncle retired from his position. While he isn't as hard nosed as his uncle, Richard does expect his reporters to uncover the truth no matter what. He's one of Joe's biggest supporters and of the Meta-Human community as well.

  • Claire Shelton, otherwise known as Volcana and she is a well known thief of valuable artifacts and information software, she begins to encounter the Atomic Skull when she comes to Metropolis. Acting as his "catwoman" she uses her charms, sexy body, and lovely voice to throw men off guard. However when push comes to shove, this Pyrokinetic woman with surprising physical strength can throw down even with Joe. She's also one of the few who can safely touch him, and often leave him with a kiss.

  • Bruno "ugly" Mannheim, the Leader of Intergang, the most powerful organization in Metropolis. A ruthless man with little regard for the lives of others, he dabbles in about any illegal form of activity in the city. Once leaving Joe for dead, he's become a bitter enemy of the Atomic Skull is is searching for a way to permanetly kill the hero once and for all.

  • Mannheim's second in command, and his top henchman for Intergang. Her regard for life is no better than her bosses own and will gladly take the life of anyone she deems a problem. Little is known of her past and how she came to work for Mannheim.

  • George Grant aka Metal-0, is a super genius in the field of robotics. His powersuit made from an indestructible but unknown alloy has made him a top tier rogue in not only Metropolis but the world over. Atomic Skull stops him in Metropolis, when he was hired by Intergang to kill Joe, however was able to get away using his new teleportation technology. While he could move on and forget Atomic Skull in Metropolis, being beaten that day sparked something inside the man, He's finally found a challenge, a foe who can stand up to him. And he will not rest until he's managed to beat this new hero.

  • Lawerence Dennis, aka Nuclear Man, has had his powers for quite awhile. In 1987, he was a test subject for a secret operation done by Cadmus to create a super being capable of fighting the super villains plaguing the planet. However the operation went wrong, and it drove the man insane with his new powers. He was contained before he could escaped and placed in cold sleep since. Until Mannheim found out about this man, and had Intergang break out this person from his icy prison. Atomic Skull intervenes and soon finds himself at a face off against a being who's potentially more powerful than he is.

  • Gerri Brauer, aka Donner, a superhero in this world and one of the openly gay superheroes. She is the daughter of a Nazi geneticist and was experimented on by him from orders of a mysterious leader of a organization called the Fourth Reich. Escaping and leaving that dark past of her life to become a superhero, she encounters Joe in Metropolis when she hears a rumor that this mysterious leader has come to the city.

  • Albrecht Krieger, aka Cap. Nazi, is the leader of the Fourth Reich, a group of super humans created by Adolf Hitler in WWII, which Krieger chosen as his prime specimen of his ideals. Looking to continue his old leader's ideals in the new modern era, Albrecht still maintains control of the Fourth Reich and heads to Metropolis to do business with Intergang there, knowing he may encounter the Atomic Skull there, little does he know he comes across a woman he helped to create...

@Thorion88: Huh, yeah that ALWAYS annoys me when powerful villains are reduced to nameless henchman level. I remember in Cry for Justice where Hal and Green Arrow are shown standing in a street full of villains they apparently beat, and BIZARRO was one of them. Bizarro, who is just as powerful as Superman, being beaten by just a Green Lantern and a guy with trick arrows. Don't get me wrong I know a GL ring is powerful and Ollie is awesome, but Bizarro in ADDITION to all those other villains just made me mad, especially since I'm a Bizarro fan!!

@Smart_Dork_Dude: Well i think it should happen cause in the old DCU after Neron cured Joe's insanity he said he was gonna try and become a hero to honor his own personal hero and then he just becomes a generic thug villain getting beaten by Manhunter and such like trash...I mean a guy who could get into a fist fight with Superman reduced to a cannon fodder dork? No way, he should be up there in the meta tier at least.

@Thorion88: I wouldn't even be against it happening in the main universe! I mean, they're making Poison Ivy a hero, and Harley Quinn an anti-hero I GUESS. Okay I don't read that book, but you get my point.

@The_Tree: Thank you very much dude. the comment of Jack Kirby made me smile alot, cause he's my all time favorite comic artist and writer. His New Gods got me into comics along with a few other favorites. And yes, nuke Man makes any list better. lol

This is a pretty f####ing cool idea! It comes off as modern, but with a mix of some Jack Kirby-esque magic. It reminds me of the most recent OMAC series, which I thought was great. I'd totally read this. And you included Nuclear Man, I have to give you props for that.
