Figured Out: The Superman Reboot

So this is the premiere of my new blog series called FIGURED OUT. This is where I figure things out for you guys. (Not that you can't do it yourself.) I honestly don't know how often this is going to come out but this seemed like the perfect starter.

No Caption Provided
The Superman Reboot... Well what do we know?
  • Christopher Nolan is the Godfather of the movie.
  • Deborah Snyder and Emma Thomas are also producing.
  • The Script is being written by Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan, and David S. Goyer.
  • Zack Snyder is directing.
  • They're rebooting the entire series.
  • Brandon Routh is not the star.

But here is where everyone is confused. Who is playing Superman and other characters, and who is the villain?
Sara Lima reported Christopher Nolan announcing how his casting will go here. And if you missed it, he said that he wanted an all-star cast full of Hollywood's biggest stars. Now as for the villains, everyone is tired of Lex Luthor and people are begging for Darkseid or Doomsday. Honestly, you cannot put Darkseid or Doomsday in the beginning of Superman's story. And you seriously can't start off Superman's story without Lex Luthor. We had the rumor that Zod was the villain but that was just a rumor.

Here is what I believe everyone missed. I remember reading an article posted on this site by either G-Man or Babs, stating that Christopher Nolan announced that the villains in the movie were going to be Lex Luthor and Brainiac. I went to search for it so that you call could see my source but as I was searching, I found nothing. Either it was deleted or I was on crack. (And I don't do drugs... Except that time I overdosed on caffeine through tons of Dr. Pepper.) I'm still pretty sure that what I read was true.

So maybe I don't have it all figured out. But we're pretty close so far. And now that we've gone through all that, I ask you to watch this video I came across on YouTube where Tom Welling is in a Superman movie with a bunch of epic villains.

We have villains like Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Zod, and Parasite. Now that would just be too much...

To me, the villain is an easy call:  BRAINIAC!  Hell, Brainiac was SUPPOSED to be the villain in Superman 3, but thanks to the Salkins, that isn't what we saw.  Since this is a REBOOT, make Brainiac the cause of Krypton's destruction (Superman:TAS strongly hinted at this), and, looking to spread his evil further, he hitches a ride on baby Kal-El's ship.  From there, he is the conduit b/w Kal and Jor-El, and his knowledge of Kryptonian culture (Since he's essentially A.I., he has the video-logs Jor-El recorded for his son).  However, just when Clark finally accepts his role as the Man of Steel, Brainiac makes his move, using the internet to hack into a manufacturing network, which then produces him a new, ass-kicking body.  And Brainiac doesn't hesitate to let the world know how he got to Earth in the first place, causing most of the general populace to be wary of Superman.  Add in the supporting characters, drop some hints about Brainiac's master (Darkseid, duh!), a few allusions to Luthor and LexCorp, and there you have it:  A modern, relevant Superman who's fighting someone on a level playing field.
NOTE:  Since this is LUTHOR we're talking about, LexCorp's robotics lab can be the source for Brainiac's new body.  This also makes room for Luthor in the sequel, since the data from Brainiac can be used to make Lex much wealthier than before, as well as giving him the basis for his Battlesuit.  And if you're wondering why Brainiac doesn't just tell the world who Superman REALLY is, its b/c Jor-El already suspected Brainiac to be the cause of his planet's impending doom, so he reprogrammed him with certain guidelines, but couldn't change too much, or the High Council would notice.  I also think the Council's total faith in Brainiac is why Jor-El is cast out of Krypton's inner circle, and why he decides to send Kal away in the first place.
As for the whole Clark/Kal secret?  Easy.....since he moves so fast, there's no image /w a recognizable face.  Post-Crisis, Bryne retconned Superboy to be an urban legend, as Clark shaped the identity of Superman as he grew into it.  I'd imagine in the digital age, Clark maintains his anonymity be simply being too fast to catch.  I see it as alot like KINGDOME COME's Flash:  none really SEE him, but in Metropolis have FELT his presence....  As a series of movies, we see Superman in a post-911 world.  A super powered mystery man shows up, and the U.S. government's gonna take notice.  They naturally develop some contingency plans, and cue CADMUS!  It worked brilliantly in JLU, so why change it here?!  Also, the comics have touched on this sometimes, but the movie studios never had the balls to go anywhere near the obvious parallels b/w Superman and Jesus.  Various writers have touched on it, and I see no reason to shy away from it here.  If Superman flew into OUR world, today, there'd be more than a few people who would mistake Clark for Christ reborn.  Clark obviously has nothing to do with it, but it would be easy to show some devoted followers forming a new Christian denomination from the idea.  This could be the reason that Superman finally gives Clark Kent that famous interview that establishes his reputation as a top-notch reporter at the Daily Planet--he has to convince the public he's not freakin' JESUS!

Lex Luthor should not be in the first movie. Seriously enough. We just saw him in returns and he was corny, and plain. This time put in Superman against someone with actual power ....Brainiac could fit this very well, and introduce Lex in the second or third movies. Luthor's good, but the world doesn't need him right now.

Braniac it is. And I like the idea of having Supes stay secret  at first kinda like Smallville, they could have Braniac tell the world about Superman and have everyone distrust him untill he beats Braniac then they see him as the hero he is.

The complete utter lack of Mister Mxyzptlk love here disturbs me.

.__.

And as long as Lex isn't the only villain of the first movie, I'm cool with it. He should be there, imo, even though I'm...well, bored of him :/ Zod would've been boss though, if done right.

Luthor would be a great background character to have but not the big bad for this movie. Intro Luthor as that ~respected businessman~ that Clark doesn't trust but don't have him be the bad guy in this movie. He can be there for sequels and all that but just let Supes have a villain he can have a kickass, knockdown, drag-out fight with for this first one. I'm not picky about which one it is. Just someone who can get flung into some buildings and keep on ticking.

Then you've got the establishment of Lex as a major presence in Superman's life and he does belong in a reboot story at least a little bit but you don't get bogged down in the same old, same old of the last film.

I pretty much agree with you. But they should put the Lizard treatment on Lex. Make him bad but don't make them battle until like a 3rd or 4th movie. He could hire other villains or side with them or back them financially, but never fight Superman himself.
