Covers to Be Replaced (Digital Era Especially)
Because of the rise of digital comics and the mass sharing of preview cover images months before a book is released, many modern comics have the wrong covers on this site that need to be replaced with the physical cover that was actually printed and sold. Below is a short explanation of what are easy red flags to look out for per publisher and example series are listed for anyone to help with.
This list is nowhere near exhaustive but a rough sampling to use a starting point. Trades/hardcovers are less commonly wrong but can still be missing quotes on the cover or have the wrong publisher logo, etc.
Any replaced covers should be reported in the Editing & Tools forum.
Publishers and Their Red Flags
- DC Comics (missing barcode/price; although certain limited books tend not to have these features...books where it has been removed tend to have an age-rating in its place)
- Marvel (missing barcode/price)
- Image (every single thing you can imagine and many things you can't are frequently wrong on these covers, you'd have an easier time checking every cover than seeking out specific ones...from missing price to wrong logo to different art to wrong authors to signatures or tiny text being added/removed or text being the wrong color or placement of logos shifted, etc.; it's all there...if a cover looks right, it's probably not)
- Dark Horse Comics (missing barcode/price)
- Dynamite Entertainment (unfortunately very inconsistent, all their covers are generally designed with a space for a price but randomly some physical books have a price and others do not, other cover changes can occur as well...covers should at least be consistent within a series)
- IDW Publishing (missing price...sometimes other issues like author names)
- Boom! Studios (they are frequently messed up by editors but it's not easy to spot them because Boom! stopped putting prices on the cover so changes are more subtle like author names being different or moved around)
- Archie Comics (missing barcode)
- Scout Comics (missing price)
- Oni Press (missing price, sometimes barcode, other changes exist)
- Titan Comics (missing barcode)
- Ahoy Comics (missing price/barcode)
- Antarctic Press (missing barcode)
- UDON (missing barcode)
- Sergio Bonelli Editore (missing price...often has a copyright watermark not on the real covers)
- Minor Publishers (missing price is often an obvious sign to double-check)
