CV's Top 100 Super-Villains List 2011

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls! Welcome to Comic Vine's Top 100 Super-Villains 2011!

Thats right! As I somehow survived hosting Comic Vine's Superhero list (check out the list and the blog!), I thought I could stand to make a sequel community list, but for Super-Villains! (check out Blog for comments and such!)

Thank yous!

I would like to thank Liberty for his continued help with the planing of this list and so much more. I also thank my 3 comunicators: jubilee042, jhazzroucher, and Spiderbat87, because they helped promote this list so I really didn't have to! I also thank ReVamp, Pikahyper, Spacey and so many others who helped throughout the list process. I thank all of my 19 nominators (I can't say how much I apprishate you guys suport no matter the holidays which might get in the way! I thank everyone who I know and who voted on this list which made it what it is today! thanks to all of you!

Step One: Collecting the Nominators

First we assigned 20 publisher slots to 20 different people including: the understanding and possibly insane Billy Batson (DC), wonderful Haydenclaireheroes (Marvel), the cousin of PikminMania named Ultraglubber (Image Comics/Top Cow/Wildstorm Comics), the passionate PikminMania (Dark Horse Comics/Dark Horse Manga), the intelligent Final Arrow (Dynamite Entertainment), the helpful Lazystudent (Boom Studios), the busy Dr.X (Archie/Red Circle/ Mighty Comics / Impact Comics), the entertaining TheRedRobin96 (IDW Publishing), the cleverly named CitizenBane (Vertigo Comics), the creative "NOM-inator" named Icarusflies (Fleetway Comics/Rebellion Comics), the nice RedheadedAtrocitus (Acclaim Comics/Valiant Comics), the responsibility accepting Hawkeye44 (America's Best Comics(ABC)/Milestone Comics/First Comics), the historian, teacher, and all round crazy person Turoksonorstone and handsome and insane user named The Poet (both Malibu Comics and Harvey Comics/Gold Key Comics/Dell Comics), the artistically talented Decept-o (AC), the great, challenge-accepting Razza Tazz (Epic Comics, Comico), the overqualified Silkcuts (Eclipse/Charlton Comics), the totally talented Tonis [too many ts?] (Fawcett Comics/Centaur Comics), the challenge accepting and helpful chalkshark (Nedor Comics/Quality Comics) and the EXTREMELY helpful Liberty (Fox Comics/Holyoke Comics).

Step Two/Three/Five: 168 nominations

Each gave me 5 from their publisher and 3 from where ever for a total of 160 character.and then I opened the list for the comunity nomiantions from which I got 8 characters for a final total of 168 characters. The people who parispated in Step Five (Community Nominations) include (in a spoiler:)

At least Dr. Doom is in the Top Ten. Doom is the Master of All! Bwa Ha Ha! I am also happy that Sinestro, Brainiac, and Magneto made the Top Ten as well.

Great idea, pretty cool to have a community list for the villains as well. Now more people can check out just who the real comic book fans have decided are the best bad guys!

Posted by The Poet

@Decept-O: thanks and thank you for all of your help!

I personally like #13 :P

To me the only problem is how low Norman and Kingpin are, and how high Batman's villains (like Scarecrow and Riddler) are. Seriously, I think everyone voted for Riddler to please Poet.

This was awesome! And I'm pleased with the results :)

LOL,I'm surprised by how high Freeze,Harley,Scarecrow and Two-face are ranked. But I'm pleased nonetheless.

Edited by kfhrfdu_89_76k

@PikminMania:

For your information, I voted for Kingpin, but not for Riddler. I mean, I like both, but I like Kingpin more.

Joker is number 1! Yes!

But in the end, there are way too many villains who are the greatest, to fit in to this list. But anyhow, great work guys. And gals, of course.

By the way Poet, Invisible man also had the want to rule Earth. So, you could add that one to the list also. I mean, he didn`t succeed, but shouldn`t that be included?

And where`s the info for Cobra Commander?

But still, thanks yo` all.

Posted by The Poet

@PikminMania: well I point out that Riddler was included on 18 of the 22 lists. This effected his position greatly. His average position was 31. 18 and 31 averaged together is (rounded up) 24.6, which gave his inital position. the 3 votes helped him become 24.41 (rounded of course). this talley gave number 13.

So in conclusion, it really effected the list when the list makers included him on their lists.

@kfhrfdu_89_76k: I'll add that bit for invisibleman when I get a chance.

Cobra c.'s nomination reason was lost in the shuffle. Hopefully that user will give me them agian :)

Now hold on just a damn second. You have Q on the list but you don't include Gul Dukat from Star Trek Deep Space Nine, one of the most complex and well developed villains in all of fiction. This list was great until I learned of that

With only 100 characters on this list I think it very hard to include EVERY single character in the world of comics. The characters were nominated by the community and cosigned by the community. I don't know whether this Gul Dukat fellow would have been cosigned and therefore added to the list. I just know he was not nominated either by our 20 nominators or by the community nominations.

I'm sorry that your favorite character was not included and that you don't think this list is great. If a 2012 Villain list is done I hope you are present to nominate your character.

Um....Hal Jordan is not, I repeat not a villain. Seriously, what's with all the hate on Hal?

ah, I wondered if this controvercy was dead or not...appears not... (I love this controvercy from Hal and Storm as well from the previous list)

Well, you can read the nominator's reasoning for nominating him. While I do view the character as a hero, I must say they have some interesting reasoning for nominating him. Very Juicy. I would like to point out that the nominator has expressed to me that he (or she) does not hate Hal Jordan and merely views him as a bad guy in some instances.

Moderator
Posted by Zeeguy91

@The Poet: I did, and I have to say that I really disagree with the legitimate reason and the others I find completely absurd. Hal's a villain cuz he called Tom Kalmaku "Pieface"? Don't blame Hal for that, blame the times. When these characters first debuted, it was acceptable to say things like that. However, if the nominator in question had actually read the most recent origin for Hal (Secret Origin by Geoff Johns), he or she would know that Hal actually stood up for Tom when someone else called him "Pieface".

Anyway, the other reasons I see that she/he put forward, they don't really qualify Hal as being a villain. Aside from his days as Parallax (which were explained simply to be Hal possessed by a cosmic entity), all those things were just screw-ups. Hal is just a guy who's screwed up sometimes in his life and does his best to make up for it. I mean, seriously, millions of people drunk drive. Its wrong, yes, but I wouldn't say it makes them bad people. Hal has flaws, just like almost any other character, but he tries to make up for it by doing the right thing whenever possible.

And furthermore, of we're going by anecdotal instances to define whether someone's a villain or not, then I nominate Batman to be in the top 10. In Tower of Babel, Batman observed each of his teammates on the JLA, plotted ways to take down each of them individually, and then let those plans fall into the hands of Ra's al Ghul. That makes Batman personally responsible for almost killing each and every one of them. So...why isn't he on the list? Because his pattern of behavior demonstrates that he is more on the side of good, that's why. Its the same with Hal. He may do stupid things every now and then, but when push comes to shove, he's on the side of the angels. To put him on a list of villains with the likes of Megatron and Ultron is ridiculous.

Posted by The Poet

@Zeeguy91: well, it is a tricky subject and a very controversial one (though it isn't as controversial as Storm Storm is #1 in Comic Vine's Top 100 Superheroes 2011)

On the night of Hal's nomination, there were actully 2 arguements about it. One was in a pm, which lasted a page and might have lasted longer, but I stepped in and ended it. Another happened in another pm. As I remember there was a double team up. I decided I would let the 20 nominators and the community settle it out. The nominators gave him an average position of 65 or so for the inital order and the community kicked him down to 79.

I let the community decide and they did. Maybe next year you can vote and we'll see who is on the list...

I love that you've included Hal Jordan here! I'm not overly familiar with the Green Lantern Comics (yet) but based on what you've said he difinitely should be included.

just to clarify: what the nominator said. I was just neutral host on the matter, but I will admit it was interesting that we included him. It sure was fun seeing the two sides fight (one side wanted him on the list and the other didn't). one of the ones who didn't actually wrote a nice, long passionate blog on the matter. The same person (who I will not name just to keep their privacy) voted for the characters who were initially UNDER Hal Jordan (essentially voting Hal Jordan down on the list). It was very entertaining...and I still get the occasional user who demands in what I imagine is a squeaky whine, "why Hal Jordan on the list?!" (even though the reasons the user provided still are underneath).

As I said entertaining...
