Reign of Doomsday? Count Me In 0

The Good: This is one of the better of DC's big January 'focus on the characters' covers. It's a one-shot, and it's nice and iconic. Ed Benes' art looks good as usual, and whatever he did with the inks makes things look nice and sleeker compared to usual, and it suits this issue very well. The beginning of the issue is excellent. The first page sets up the whole thing very well with an epic inner monologue by Steel that really captures the weight of this moment in Steel's eyes.I rather like Stee...

Heavy Heart 2

The Good: Its good to see Deadman's story progressing more regularly, seeing as how his is technically the 'Main Story' of the entire event. The little touches are very nice. Boston and his cheeseburgers, and all in all, you can see the entire development of his character lain out in the few pages he occupies in this issue. And few wasn't even bad, they were enough for this issue. I'm really happy with the character development he;s been going through, and it hits a peak here. And his reunion wi...

Three Times the Weird, Three Times the Fun 0

Lobo The Good: The entire story is one giant 10 page joke.As the bounty hunter brags and brags about his battle, we, the reader, see the events in panels and can clearly pick out the discrepancies in his story. Just when you feel that the point has been made, he's a typical big mouthed 'all bark no bite' obnoxious 'that guy,' he gets his just desserts. Perfect timing. Usually, I could give or take with Lobo, but my god did I love him here. Every single drop of his dialogue oozed greatness. it wa...

The New Blue and Gold? 5

The Good: Normally I don't like Brett Booth's art all that much. It's not bad art by any means, it's just not my taste. I don't know what it was, but as the issue progressed either the writing was immersive enough that I didn't notice the art, or the art got better. Either way, this issue made me a lot less nervous about BB taking over art duties in JLA. A lot of this issue is an excellent recap of some of the more obscure major event of the DCU as of recent years. There's a lot of obscure or le...

Rewind 3

The Good: The narration starts off very normal. It is a villain explaining his backstory. Even in it's normalcy I was instantly engrossed. I loved the origin here for Professor Zoom, especially since I knew very little about him prior to this. Then when everything seems to be going to hell as expected, Johns throws in a mind blowing curveball that shits the mood into a seriously dark and creepy atmosphere hanging over the narrative that slowly grows as the twists keep coming faster and faster. S...

Hot Blooded Awesome 8

The Good: The inner monologue from Atrocitus was fantastic. We finally got a good look into his head, and it worked very well. Especially the way the end reflected the beginning. The form The Butcher takes in a human host is COMPLETELY BADASS. The way The Butcher interacts with his host is brilliantly wicked. The ending conversation between Atrocitous and The Spectre is a fantastic look at Capital Punishment and such themes. It harkens back to the earlier issues of The New Guardians arc, and I r...

Emotional Odyssey 0

The Good: BEAUTIFUL cover. The opening scene was very powerful, and fit in really well with the rest of the series, especially the conclusion of the previous issue. Galahad's really growing on me. Not that I hated him before, but he seems to be serving a purpose now, as a sort of catalyst for some of Green Arrow's character development, and a foil to his attempted isolation. So far he still seems to only be around before and after Green Arrow does something, but it's interesting having him aroun...

The Abyss Gazes Also... 3

The Good: Whoa. Jock's crazy minimalist artwork is positively AMAZING. This guy was BORN to draw Batman. Everything just looks so great, even though there's so little detail, or something. I don't know what it is, but in some way, his artwork looks thrown together lazily. Yet, this turns out to look epic. It suits Batman to a nail. I don't think he's putting in little effort, it's just his style, and I have nothing bad to say about it whatsoever. And as things spiral downwards, darker and creepi...

The Black Ring On a Decline? 0

The Good: The opening scene with Luthor and Scandal Savage is the same kind of beautifully written scene I've come to expect from Cornell. The dialogue is witty and clever, and everything I've come to love about this story. We get some pretty insane plot revelations. There's a huge one that calls all the way back to #890, and actually doesn't really tell us a whole lot, but brings up some wild implications that I didn't see coming in the least. There's A LOT of Action. It's pretty crazy, but coh...

It's All in the Pacing 0

The Good: Crain's art continues to suit the mood of this story perfectly, and the shadows are toned down a tad, making things a lot clearer. The dialogue is fantastic. Wells has a beautiful grasp of Spider-Man and it shows in spades. Now we come to the big thing that impressed me, was the pacing. It can be tough to write a superhero comic like a horror movie, but damn if that isn't what happened here, and it worked. There's a lot of back and forth between the 2 different sets of characters, and ...

A Great Sign of Things to Come 3

The Good: Alex Sinclair's colors do WONDERS for David Finch's artwork. Finch's artwork already looked very detailed and the colors add a whole other layer of detail to it. It has this quality to it that reminds me A LOT of the fantastic Jim Lee's artwork. But can he write as well as he draws? The answer is yes. Batman has a ridiculous degree of inner monologuing in this issue and all of it is phenomenal. He breaks everything down to the tiniest detail, and it still never feels too wordy. Finch c...

Titans Getting Schooled 1

The Good: J.T. Krul is really impressing me with his writing. His Damian is fantastic. He always takes everything personally, and almost goes out of his way to take offense at anything said, and it clearly doesn't feel like a conscious effort. He's suffering from a self imposed isolation. Deep down, I think he wants to be more like his father, and automatically assumes nobody likes him, and then plays up the persona that he blames as the reason for people not liking him. All of this is extremely...

Annataz Ot Degnoleb Eussi Siht 3

The Good: Guillem March's cover is stunning.Although I have other things to say about the change in artists, I rather enjoyed Jeremy Haun's artwork as I usually do. Some of his faces are kind of funky, but many of them display some quite good emotions. And I think he really made those scenes with the flow of memories. Zatanna's conversation at the beginning was a good way to explore her emotions, and overall it was a very good scene. Harley playing the mediator seems apt. She WAS a psychiatrist ...

Millar and Innocence In the Same Sentence? I'm Impressed 2

The Good: While each new Millarworld title has been less and less plausible, they all manage to capture that spark of 'realism.' Essentially, what would happen if Superheroes and/or Supervillains existed in the REAL world. Never before have I seen a comic that so captures such a realistic reaction to the emergence of superheroes. And Millar has done it 3 times now. After testing out his powers, 'Superior' goes on a worldwide hero spree, and the news captures every bit of it. The public's reactio...

Farewell Philip Tan 0

The Good: The cover is pretty awesome, but it's Philip Tan, so that practically goes without saying. But I do really like this one. Whooo! Philip Tan is back on the art for this issue and I am glad. Freight Train's fight with The Shaggy Man is completely insane, and I don' think anybody else could've pull it off quite so amazingly. We find out Looker's real reason for coming to Markovia. They suggest it was stated in #29, but upon re-reading it I can say it was only just barely implied, and even...

A Snack Instead of a Meal 0

The Good: Dustin Nguyen's cover is AWESOME. His covers have been some of the very best on this story arc. His interior art is also still excellent.Badbug is still an interesting new villain. It's good to see at least one Bruce Batman story with his return that ISN'T Batman Inc. At least one adventure in Gotham that isn't an analysis of his allies or a step in Batman Inc. And Hush is essentially the perfect villain to drive that kind of story. Hush is finally back in costume, and looking awesome, ...

It's Sad That There's Already a Better Batman Inc Story Than This 2

The Good: J.H. Williams' cover is fantastic. It does a great job of representing the country of the issue and the characters, and it's just so trippy without being truly psychedelic. It looks nice. Yanick Paquette's art looks a lot sharper than the last issue and I'm finding myself enjoying it a lot more as well. There's an absolutely bizarre sense of camp blended with a dark strangeness that really only Grant Morrison can pull off so well. It seems to suit this title along with the new directio...

I'm Dreaming of An Orange Christmas 1

The Good: SO FUNNY. This issue was pretty much everything I had hoped it would be in the main story. And then there was more. The cover is absolutely excellent. The sheer amount of hedonism portrayed on the cover represents everything that Larfleeze is, and everything he thinks Christmas is. The way he breaks down the 'rituals' of Christmas by his own insane logic is brilliant. No presents? They must have been stolen. But wait, the Santa Claus did not accept the ritual offering of milk and cooki...

It's A Monster Mash! 0

The Good: Let's start off with the cover. Dustin Nguyen? It's awesome. Blending black and red of horror with the gray of military. Dagnino is my least favorite of the artists on this title (not that I hate it really) and actually this is probably the best it's looked in this series. And I think I may have said that before, so now it's even better than then. A lot of the various unique Creature Commandos have really interesting and downright awesome designs. Ice's scenes with Fire are all really ...

An Inconsistant Arc 3

The Good: After a very strong start, last issue was horrendously weak. The pacing was so awful, and Omega Man barely seemed like a threat at all. THIS HAS CHANGED. Suddenly Omega Man is clearly the massive threat he was implied to be at the start. It's very clear that it's going to take the JLA AND the CSA and maybe even more to take this godlike monster down. Something changed on the artside too. Bagley's artwork looks A LOT more dynamic than it has this entire run thus far. Zauriel is here? A ...

Sci-Fi That Borders on Steampunk 3

The Good: The Weaponer is in incredible threat. The battle is so quick, yet the details make it seem like it's in slow motion, yet doesn't slow down. I know that makes no sense, but I'll just say the battle is crazy and detailed. And the way he analyzes and takes down each Lantern is pretty awesome. The artwork is totally awesome. I need to pay more attention to Tyler Kirkham, and if he ever starts drawing anything steampunk I would be all over that, because this arc clearly smacks of it. Qward ...

Disappointment in the 853rd Century 2

The Good: No matter what, it's still cool to see the DC One Million universe again. The opening speech by Robin the Toy Wonder was pretty amusing. The Pluto Batcave and the password to enter it was pretty badass. "What is it with heroes and their trophy cases?"  The artwork is pretty nice. Some of the crazy future technology was pretty awesome. The Bad: The whole thing just feels kind of empty. Batman and Superman are hardly in it at all, this is more Epoch's story, and he really makes a hard ch...

I Don't Blame Her, Those Things Are CREEPY 0

The Good: My only previous exposure to Cliff Chang's art was on some of the covers for Generation Lost. Some of the more clever ones were pretty neat, but the normal ones were boring. And the art was very stylized, so I was nervous about this issue. But lo and behold, the art here is much more 'normal,' it doesn't look as crazy as Chang's cover art, and it actually looks pretty neat. Zatanna's fear of puppets doesn't feel too unbelievable, the issue even references a previous issue of Detective ...

Listen DC, Just Give The Question A New Ongoing 0

The Good: David Hine writes an amazing Wuestion here. All the events of the past year have pushed her to this point, and the emotions are there in full. We see deep into her mind and come out sane and understanding. Batman also notes why he chose her and what one of her greatest attributes is, her control of her own mind. This issue clearly presents all the reasons why The Question is such a great character and why she totally needs her own ongoing. Similarly, the evolution of Nightrunner has be...

Rise of the Black Beetle 0

The Good: The art looks a little better than last time, and last time I thought the art looked at it's best thus far in this miniseries. The flashback this time is one of the most interesting, continues the sort of side story the flashbacks make, and actually answers a question I hadn't asked. The cliffhanger at the end of the last issue seemed to imply something that would make things far too complex but it got resolved. The entire scene with Black Beetle was fantastic. All the little asides fr...

So Much Potential, Wasted 2

The Good: Some of the Orphans got some nice character development. Bruce's absolute freak out at the beginning was an amazing scene. He's been whacked out on fear gas before, but this was a well written and well executed scene. The plot twist about one of the Orphans was pretty impressively unexpected. The resolution had a dark cynical realism to it that kept up the mood of the first issue. The revelation about who the fake Batman was was pretty clever.  The Bad: The art can get make things real...

Proud to Have Tony Daniel on the Main Batman Title 7

The Good: It always, always goes without saying that Tony Daniel's art is FANTASTIC. Just gorgeously awesome on every page in every panel. I've said it once and I'll say it again. What Tony Daniel does best as a writer is have such a great grasp of all the characters. Of all the writers, he does one of the best jobs of giving Dick his own identity as Batman and properly characterizing him. I'm digging the main plot of this story arc a lot more than I was before. I like the whole 'mask of evil' t...

And the Entity Thief Is... 1

The Good: I usually don't like such hamhanded summaries of previous events (I for one feel like jumping in the middle of a story arc is RETARDED, but w/e) but this one is actually pretty cool. The fight with Hal and Barry-llax was pretty cool, and it was good to see a nice drawn out fight after a bunch of issues of dialogue and various journeying. Larfleeze once again proved that he can be a force to be reckoned with and an absolute psychopath rather than JUST comedic relief. The use of Parallax...

It's Such a Shame Cornell and McDaniel Are Only Here For One Arc 0

The Good: I LOVE Guillem March's cover. It's so damn trippy, which seems to suit the theme.mood of Batman and Robin. Absence's backstory is really interesting, and it's amazing how clearly you can see her slow descent into madness as her story continues. Sure the reason for it is kind of a huge load of BS, but at the same time, the writing is so strong you can easily overlook it. I'm a huge fan of McDaniel's artwork, despite the hate he seems to get sometimes. He has such a great 90's quality to...

Happy Birthday Dove! 2

The Good: A really nice cover by excellent cover artist Stanley 'Artgem' Lau what really sets of the mood of the arc and the beginning so perfectly. There's quite a lot of excellent comedy that amuses me to no end but never goes over the top to dilute the mood of the story. Gail Simone really has it down how to write some nice easygoing comedy and really emphasize how the characters interact and play off each other in dialogue. A lot of Oracle's inner monologue at the beginning is such a great s...

BOOM. 5

The Good: I like what Aqualad's significance is. It makes sense, it explains a lot, and it's pretty cool. And of course it sets up Aquawar well. The scene with Deathstorm toying with Alvin is a very powerful scene. Deathstorm is a really twisted SOB and I absolutely hate him (in a good way) for being so deliciously evil. Aqualad's costume is cool.  I'm glad the whole fact that Aquaman can only summon undead fish for now is still observed. Although I wonder why he's still not done his mission. I ...

Allegra Garcia: Too Good to Be True 0

The Good: The developments on Allegra Garcia's story seem interesting, and I think she might return someday down the line, which I like because she seems interesting. And I really like how she interacts with Deathstroke. The back-and-forth dialogue's between them are pretty fun.We got a very powerful scene from Cinder's backstory, and an equally powerful one in the present. I think she's my favorite member of the team (excluding Deathstroke obviously.) She's a neat new character with a really da...

Blood Vomit Prophecies (That Would Make an AWESOME Band Name) 0

The Good: The whole deal with the mind control of the Green Lantern rookies is a bit overplayed, but Tomasi manages to make it interesting here. The way we're introduced to it, and they way we see in depth how far it goes, and especially how Zardor maintains it are all really cool, and makes it feel not so recycled. We see some clear differences in the characters personalities that define them. Guy is headstrong and races after the flying rings, Kilowog is secretly very sensitive and parental to...

It's Like Watching BBC While On Acid 1

The Good: Paul Cornell continues to make this series constantly fun and uplifting. The whole thing begs not to be taken seriously, and it's a joyful ride the whole way through. There actually does finally seem to be a thread connecting the issues together to form a miniseries. Richard's motorcycle looks awesome. Seeing Shrike again, and the public's reaction to him is interesting and follows logically from #1. Richard does a great job of being really creepy out of the public eye. Whenever you ca...

Much Better 3

The Good: The pacing in this issue is slow. But it's that good kind of slow that lets you know that each character is going to be completely fleshed out before we just thrusting them into some situation. It also forgives some of my problems with the first issue, where seeing the pacing in action, I understand why the first issue was the way it was. We get a nice in depth backstory for Lightning and it's really interesting. I almost wonder if the government set him up on purpose but I can't say r...

The Robin and the Star 0

The Good: Marcus To's artwork continues to be both excellent, and fitting for the title. I like the way the font for the issue title decays from right to left. As per usual, the dialogue and the transitions between it and the inner monologue continue to be where Red Robin shines as a title. It does a superb job of evoking that sense of a balance between Bruce's solitude, and Dick's friendliness. Tim is an extremely interesting character, and it's always a great read to see him work out every lit...

They'd Better Give This 'JLI' an Ongoing Once This is Over 4

The Good: I like that Wonder Woman's current predicament (Which I personally haven't been following, but actually want to) is being acknowledged. Max Lord's reaction to the news about Wonder Woman and the rage at the irony is an awesome powerful scene. Booster and Atom's debate over ethics is a heavy heavy scene. It's amazing how these 2 compare and contrast each other's situations and their emotional investment in this journey. Rocket Red breaks up the tension well, with mostly Blue Beetle bein...

[Some Pun Involving the Word Boomerang] 1

The Good: I'm not sure how I felt about Captain Boomerang before now. He was certainly an interesting character in The Dastardly Death of the Rogues, and I never hated him, he just never fell in my radar. This might also be due to my minimal exposure to Flash before this series. Whatever the cause, Geoff Johns makes him interesting here. His current misadventures are interesting, but for most of the issue, the real meat is in his backstory, which is chopped up into perfectly sized large chunks, ...

R.I.P. Ted Kord 0

The Good: In the beginning, there's still that same great style of humor I've come to expect from Griffen/DeMatteis. We finally got to see what happens after Rani stole Goldstar's uniform. And there's some nice development for her all around. I think she makes a nice addition to this comic, as a plot device to build up Booster's morals a bit, and to be a kid and keep everything a bit more lively. After the roaring, crazy, laugh out loud insanity of the past few issues, everything finally comes c...

The Light in the Darkness 0

The Good: It's Batgirl, and Bryan Q. Miller is writing. The dialogue is fantastically funny without loosing itself in the comedy, allowing proper balance for the serious parts. The way the issue title and credits were presented deserves special recognition for impressing me, something that I rarely pay attention to the layout of. I like how consistent Miller is with Batgirl's supporting characters. Francisco and Jordanna are more than just characters from that one story arc, especially Jordanna,...
