What I read in November 2023

Last month I didn't have the time to post the monthly read haul, but this month I said to myself - "I better do it now, earlier in the month, because otherwise I will forget once again". This month, just like last one, felt pretty slow and it felt like I didn't read almost anything. However, when I added up the issues at the end, it was yet again a pretty good amount of issues.

The month was spend on reading indie books more, finishing up some lone arcs that I felt like rereading or reading even for the first time. So for each book I'll share a quick thought, quick review.

114 issues Read
114 issues Read
Invincible #109-144 (36 Total issues)
Invincible #109-144 (36 Total issues)

Invincible - So I finished my reread of Invincible and boy, what an incredible book it is! There's a reason why it's one of myfavorites - it has everything a comic book reader can want from a story.

Rating - 9/10

Powers vol. 1(2000) #1-37; Annual #1 (38 issues)
Powers vol. 1(2000) #1-37; Annual #1 (38 issues)

Powers - One of the most acclaimed Bendis books out there. It felt like a mash-up of Alias and New Avengers with a mix-up of some other indie books. It had a slow start which didn't feel like anything, it was rather bland, but it grew on me. The story is nice, engaging and entertaining, but it's overly wordy and the paneling is a bit weak and takes a lot of the enjoyment.

Rating - 7.5/10

Onslaught Event (20 issues)
Onslaught Event (20 issues)

Onslaught - I didn;t read all of the tie-ins as a large part of them felt unnecessary, but I read all of the X-title tie-ins as well as the FF and Avengers ones. The event is far better than I remember it, but it wasn't executed well... at least the conclusion. The weakest parts were the Avengers and FF issues to be honest. Best parts were in the Uncanny X-Men title, Joe Madureira is incredible.

Rating - 7/10

Invincible Iron Man: The Tragedy and the Triumph (14 issues)
Invincible Iron Man: The Tragedy and the Triumph (14 issues)

Tales of Suspense #91-99; Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1; Iron Man #1-4 - The story, the pencils, the dialogue feels very dated and it really disengages you from the threats and the character development. Tony is enjoyable as a character, but the villains he faces are all laughable and don't intimidate you in any way. Another con is the fact that Iron Man is like a damsel in distress each issue.

Rating - 6/10

Hulk: Scorched Earth (Hulk #25-30) (6 issues)
Hulk: Scorched Earth (Hulk #25-30) (6 issues)

Hulk: Scorched Earth - A favorite story of mine. Great Rulk story and just an overall great comic book story. Action, adventure, a bit of horror and a lot of suspense and great looming threats. A must read.

Rating - 8/10

So, this was it folks. These were the books I read in the past month. It was a good month - a lot of strong stories.

What did you guys read? Anything interesting? Anything you would recommend?

Invincible #71-108 (35 issues)
Invincible #71-108 (35 issues)

Invincible - Overall, a great part of the whole series. The Viltrumite War, the Virus infecting Mark afterwards, just tons of great storylines. There were some quite weak issues as well, but any book experiences that. However, I loved what I read.

Rating - 8/10

X-Force #39-43 (5 issues)
X-Force #39-43 (5 issues)

X-Force - Too wordy, Daniel's artwork isn't the best here and the stories were overall messes. If you're not a fan of the characters or the team - it's not worth it.

Rating - 6/10

Deadpool v.2 (1994) #1-4 (4 issues)
Deadpool v.2 (1994) #1-4 (4 issues)

Deadpool (1994) - Just what you'd expect from a Deadpool book - action, kind of a shallow plot, jokes here and there and some explicit scenes. It's not a bad book. It's fun.

Rating - 7/10

Generation X #1-6 (6 issues)
Generation X #1-6 (6 issues)

Generation X - An excellent start to a new series. Great set of characters, great chemistry between them, strong dialogue and fun stories. The visuals by Bachalo and Willingham really help out the book and make it stand out.

Rating - 8/10

X-Men #38-44 (7 issues)
X-Men #38-44 (7 issues)

X-Men - Pre and Post Age of Apocalypse stories that really gives us a lot of character work, interactions and more time to relate to most of the characters. The Legion Quest crossover also took place here which was something that I enjoyed, although I had heard many complaints about it over the years.

Rating - 7.5/10

X-Factor #108-110 (3 issues)
X-Factor #108-110 (3 issues)

X-Factor - The build-up to Legion Quest and a galactic adventure post the meeting with Legion. X-Factor tends to be one of those books that really flactuate in terms of quality for me. From writing, visuals, character work, members of the team and so on. It just really has a lot of lackluster stories that don't spark any type of emotions in me and then all of a sudden we have something truly great. This collection of 3 issues is definitely all of that in one place.

Rating - 7/10

Uncanny X-Men #319-322
Uncanny X-Men #319-322

Uncanny X-Men - As with the other X-Men title - great overall. Has its weaknesses, but nothing major.

Rating - 7/10

Rogue (1994) #1-4 (4 issues)
Rogue (1994) #1-4 (4 issues)

Rogue - A fun Rogue/Gambit adventure. Nothing deep or major, but quite fun. Also, the visuals of Wieringo are incredible.

Rating -7.5/10

Age of Apocalypse Event (39 issues)
Age of Apocalypse Event (39 issues)

Age of Apocalypse - The entire event is a major ride up and down the hill with some great minis that give us insight on this alternate future, but it also has many lackluster ones which can bore you to death. I think it could've been handled better - building the world, giving us some more explanation and maybe the events taking a longer amount of time than just a couple of months, but overall it was better than most of the X-crossovers over the years.

Did I love it? Not really. Will I reread it at some point? Yes. It was fun that's what's important.

Rating - 6.75/10

Cable #17-21 (5 issues)
Cable #17-21 (5 issues)

Cable - Some very weak stories with very bad interiors. Skroce's pencils along with the inker and the colorist delivered some issues which were an overall mess and were hard to comprehend and enjoy.

Rating - 5.5/10

X-Man #5-6 (2 issues)
X-Man #5-6 (2 issues)

X-Man - I read the first four issues as well, but I count them as part of the AoA event that's why I'm not including them here. Since Nate became part of the main universe, the two issues that I've read so far, the quality really escalated. Far better storytellig than the story that was set on Earth-295, but the book suffers from the same faith as the Cable one - Skroce on art duties.

Rating - 6.5/10

Overall, that's my reading haul for the past month. It's a bit messy, but that's mainly to the X-Men universe in the 90s. I really want to focus on one book only, but the stories were crafter in such a way that you're obliged to read everything in order to comprehend what's going on.

This month I will focus on reading more of the X-Men once again and maybe some creater owned stuff here and there. We will see where things go.

What I read in August 2023

The books I read in August.

This month I continued my The Authority reading stroll and finished up all of their books. Apart from that I read a random bunch of books that I had lying around that I haven't had read previously. It was a mix of DC and Marvel and even some manga here and there.

Below is my honest opinion on each and every one of the books.

Midnighter and Apollo - 6 issues
Midnighter and Apollo - 6 issues

Midnighter and Apollo - Much better than the preceding Midnighter solo book. A nice dynamic between the characters, strong dialogue, consistent art and nice action scenes.

Rating - 8/10

The Wild Storm - 24 issues
The Wild Storm - 24 issues

The Wild Storm - А reimagining of the Wildstorm universe through Ellis' eyes. A nice worldbuilding book that just has a bit too much going on, is dialogue heavy and feels a bit dull at times. The payoff at the end wasn't exactly satisfactory imo.

Rating - 6.5/10

Superman and the Authority - 4 issues
Superman and the Authority - 4 issues

Superman and the Authority - Definitely not one of the finest works of Grant Morrison. Feels rushed and disjointed. The threat doesn't really feel like a threat and the team never really manages to work that well together. A cool concept that remains to be explored further and in a better way.

Rating - 6/10

Marvels - 4 issues
Marvels - 4 issues

Marvels - I'd heard a lot about this book, only good things mostly. However, I remained a bit sceptical up until I read it. I expected something different, but I was left pleasantly surprised. Defnitely worth your time.

Rating - 8.5/10

Shadowland - 5 issues
Shadowland - 5 issues

Shadowland - Much was left to be desired. Felt rushed. Character were acting out of character. An uninspired plot with a few redeeming points.

Rating - 5.5/10

Fantastic Four - The Coming of Galactus (FF #44-51; Annual 3) - 9 issues
Fantastic Four - The Coming of Galactus (FF #44-51; Annual 3) - 9 issues

The Coming of Galactus - A classic story, a must read for any Marvel and FF fan, but a heavily outdated one. The dialogue and the 60s style of storytelling makes the story hard to enjoy. Characters act in certain tropes that makes them hard to like and to relate to, but the concepts which are being introduced are definitely groundbreaking for their time.

Rating - 6.5/10

Grappler Baki #1-17 (vol. 1-2) - 17 chapters
Grappler Baki #1-17 (vol. 1-2) - 17 chapters

Grappler Baki - Weak story, weak characters, weak world building and pacing, but excellent action sequences. To be honest, that's what Grappler Baki is all about. If you try not to overthink the story being weak and all, you'll probably enjoy it.

Rating - 5.5/10

Naruto #413-453 (vol. 45-48) - 40 chapters
Naruto #413-453 (vol. 45-48) - 40 chapters

Naruto - One of the best parts of the whole Naruto story - Pain vs. Naruto. It's just hard to describe with words only. Great story, great character arcs, great action, drama and suspense. A well crafter story overall.

What I read in July 2023

Hey, guys! I'm back!

I skipped a month of posting about my reading pile because of the lack of time, but this month we're back! The month of July was a slow month in terms of reading. A tendency which happens every summer as I focus more on different things rather than comic books. Summers are about spending time outdoors, going out with friends or family, going on vacations and so on. That is what I mostly do, as well. However, whenever I get the chance I do like to read here and there.

The month of July is probably the first month in 2023 in which I didn't break the 100 issue mark (I am not counting the weekly ongoing books that I am reading). However, that is not essentially a bad thing as my head definitely needed a break. I even feel like I might draw back on reading this much and I will again start watching more TV series in my free time. The head, the amount of time I spent reading definitely leads to my head hurting like a mf.

Anyway, let's skip on my ramblings and focus on the reading that I've done for the past month.

97 Back Issues Read
97 Back Issues Read

My focuses reading on the Authority continues in the month of July as well. I read mostly The Authority's appearances, but I also read two other volumes which I will mention as I spread out the list.

Secret History of the Authority: Jack Hawksmoor #1-6
Secret History of the Authority: Jack Hawksmoor #1-6

Secret History of the Authority: Jack Hawksmoor - A nice mini-series that delved further into Jack's background. It gave us a story from his past which was action packed and an entertaining drama at the same time. It also featured some of Sara Pichelli's earlier artwork.

Rating - 8/10

DC/Wildstorm: Dreamwar #1-6
DC/Wildstorm: Dreamwar #1-6

DC/Wildstorm: Dreamwar - A crossover between the two publishers which did everything a nice crossover was supposed to do. All of the characters were handled in an excellent way, the action was top notch and the artwork was clean and nice. The threat itself was a bit cliche, but it served its purpose. It's definitely a mini-series that is a must read for JL and Wildstorm fans.

Rating - 8/10

The Authority vol. 4#1-29
The Authority vol. 4#1-29

The Authority vol. 4 - The last volume of the Authority in their Wildstorm era and the last volume of the team as a team, actually. It was supposed to be a good send-off to the team before the end of Wildstorm and their transition to DC, but it definitely wasn't good in any way. Abnett and Lanning's run was a hit or miss. Most of the time the pacing was terrible and half of the characters acted out of character, while the other half of the time when it felt like an Authority book, the pacing was rushed and the issues felt like they are ending before they even begin properly. The other half of this volume was even worse as the whole travelling in the Carrier across space is one of the worst eras of the team and one of the all-time worst comic books I have ever read in my life. An uninspired book which dismantles everything about the team and their dynamic that makes them good. The artwork in both halves of this volume definitely didn't help out the writing teams, but it is what it is.

I don't recommend this book to anyone.

Stormwatch vol.3 #1-12; #0; #13-30
Stormwatch vol.3 #1-12; #0; #13-30

Stormwatch vol.3 - Don't even get me started on this book. Everything that was bad about the New 52 can be seen clearly throughout this book's run. None of the creative teams that handled the characters and the stories knew what the heck they were doing, and it ended up being a mockery of both Stormwatch and The Authority. Cuz let's be real, this is an Authority book disguised as a Stormwatch one.

Rating - 3/10

Midnighter vol. 2 #1-12
Midnighter vol. 2 #1-12

Midnighter vol. 2 - The second introduction of Midnighter to the DC Universt post-Flashpoint and post-Wildstorm's death. A book done by a gay writer about a gay character who handles in a very weird way the homosexuality of Lucas Trent. I thought that by being a gay himself, Orlando would have an even better grasp of the character than previous writers, but it wasn't the case. He turns the Midnighter into an almost unrecognizable character who flirts with anyone who is slightly attractive, uses his homosexuality to mess with people's heads and defeat them more easily, and who in every single battle must mention that due to his super computer he has ran a million scenarios and he already knows how this fight ends.

This volume introduces yet another origin story of the character and it's even worse than the previous ones. It seems like DC had real trouble about Apollo and Midnighter just being experiments of Henry Bendix.

The fights at least were nice... the times when they were handled by Aco and the times when it was actually easy to follow up the movement through the panels....

The book isn't bad, but it tried too much to be something which it shouldn't have been.

Invincible Iron Man : Five Nightmares (Inv. Iron Man #1-7)
Invincible Iron Man : Five Nightmares (Inv. Iron Man #1-7)

Invincible Iron Man : Five Nightmares - Nice beginning of Fraction's run. A good exploration of Tony's character, his relationship with Pepper and his struggles. The story has a nice threat in the face of Obadiah Stane's son - Ezekiel. However, the ending and the final battle between Tony and Ezekiel feels a bit anti-climatic. Larroca's artwork also isn't a favorite thing of mine about the book as I am not a big fan of his.

Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1-6

Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite - I bought the book in a rush, never hearing anything about it, without any recommendations and without any expectations. I've had for a good year or two and I still hadn't read it. However, I gave it a chance this last week and I can say I enjoyed it. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it's entertaining and a quick read. It triggered my interest in this universe - reading more about it or watching the Netflix series, so I will definitely give the characters another chance of entertaining me.

What I read in May 2023

Another month has passed and another stack of comics has been read by moi. This month marks the end of my run throught the Ultimate Marvel universe... finally. When I first started reading it once again in February it seemed like an easy task. However, that was not the case at all. Plenty of series, mini-series and events occured in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, but I manaed to go through them.

So. let's begin my quick summary of the read book and my honest opinion about them.

144 Back issues read
144 Back issues read

To the start off the read pile, I will begin with the book which I was mostly invested into as my initial plan was to read the appearances and the storyline regarding Ultimate Spider-Man - his beginnings, his story, his death and afterwards the creation of Miles Morales and his integration into UMU and then in 616. So, with no further ado...

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man v2 #0-28; Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man #1-3; Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1-12
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man v2 #0-28; Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man #1-3; Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1-12

Ultimate Spider-Man: Miles Morales - I will tackle the entirety of Miles' appearances in UMU as I see them as one title which was just hit by the new marketing tricks of Marvel (new #1 and so on).

Miles Morales is one of the greatest creations of the 21st century in comic books and Bendis really managed to make another hit book and semi-franchise by creating Miles. In a way, expressing my feelings about Miles as a character actually expresses my feelings about his books. He is a mix of Ultimate Peter, 616 Spider-Man and something unique which is just him and that makes a very interesting character. The stories had some misses - like the second Venom, the resurrection of Ultimate Peter and the weird/wild last appearance of Doom in Ultimate Marvel, but overall it was nice as it had a lot of great world and character building along with great artwork and dialogue along the way.

Rating - 7.75/10

Spider-Men #1-5
Spider-Men #1-5

Spider-Men - A great story. An entertaining story. A fun one. One which initiated the creation of the Spider-Verse and a big inspiration for the movie. It is everything you would expect from a story about 2 Spider-Men from different universes meeting each other. A must read for every Spider-Man fan.

Rating - 8.5/10

Ultimate Comics: Ultimates #1-24; Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye #1-4
Ultimate Comics: Ultimates #1-24; Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye #1-4

Ultimate Comics: Ultimates + Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye - Hickman's Ultimates was a great start to the new volume even though it was rushed by the second arc and it ended abruptly. After his departure the book started going downhill in a hurry and it was quite evident that everything good going around the Ultimate Universe will centered solely around Miles.

Humphries and Fialkov really managed to make everything about the Ultimates boring as hell.

Rating - 6/10

Ultimate Comics: X-Men #1-22
Ultimate Comics: X-Men #1-22

Ultimate Comics: X-Men - Do you want to read Kitty Pryde who is out of character? Do you want to read about Iceman who behaves like a 5 year old? Do you want to read about romances that just don't make sense and come out of nowhere (Kitty and Jimmy, Rogue and Quentin, Iceman and Husk)? Do you want to read about new and original mutants that you will never care about? Well, lucky you, this is the book for you!

Really though, this book is dull as hell. Only redeeming part is the good artwork throughout.

Rating - 5/10

Secret Wars #0 - 9
Secret Wars #0 - 9

Secret Wars - Reading this event is far better to be done after reading Hickman's Avengers and New Avengers saga, but in a way it delivers a conclucsion to the Ultimate Universe as it ends it, merges it with the 616 universe. It brings Miles and several other characters to the main Marvel universe and it is important to read it, so you can understand how everything about Ultimate Marvel ends.

As far as events go this one is the best Marvel event ever produces. It is grand, it is epic, it is everything you would ever want from an event and even though its quite text heavy, it is an easy read. A must read for every Marvel fan!

Rating - 9/10

Ultimate End #1-5
Ultimate End #1-5

Ultimate End - The conclusion of the Ultimate line, the farewell. A confusing, lackluster mini-series that feels like a good summary of the Ultimate line - way too much going on. When you read this you can really understand why Marvel decided to end this part of their universe.

Rating - 4/10

Stormwatch by Ellis - Stormwatch #37-50; Stormwatch v2 #1-11; WildC.A.T.s/Aliens #1
Stormwatch by Ellis - Stormwatch #37-50; Stormwatch v2 #1-11; WildC.A.T.s/Aliens #1

Warren Ellis' Stormwatch - As soon as DC announced that we will be getting an Authority movie I had to reread their appearances and it all starts here. I tried reading some of the back issues but they were literally unbearable to read - text heavy, bad dialogue, clicke af, weak characterization and nothing worth of your time. As soon as Ellis arrives everything changes its course. You get more invested into the story, the characters' lives and you actually feel connected to them.

Ellis makes a great team book as he takes a quite member heavy team, but splits it into mini-teams and each issue focuses on different characters, so you can get to know them more and he tries to make you care.

Everything about this run is great apart from the conclusion as it felt rushed and some of the deaths felt like they could've been done better as they were done off-panel. Biggest issue I have with the book is the mediocre artwork.

Rating - 7.5/10

With this my blog post comes to an end. These are the books I've read. This month I will focus on reading more from the Authority and I will delve further into the Wildstorm universe.

What about you guys? What did you read? What is your opinion on the books that I read and how do you think I can improve these type of posts?

What I read in April 2023

April was a great month for reading back issues, collecting comic books and enjoying the current books which I have been following. As good as it was, it was that odd as well. Usually walking into the warmer months my reading habits tend to diminish as I have less and less time to read, and even less desire to read. The warmer months are usually the ones to go out more, to take vacations and just enjoy the good times with friends, family and even some 'me' time. However, as I have taken bodybuilding more seriously and I am on prep for a show which will be in October, I have tried compensating being social with reading comic books and watching different shows.

This has been one of my strongest months, in terms of total back issues read and finished new books and volumes, in quite a while. Even though I have managed to read quite a lot I still haven't finished reading about the Ultimate Marvel Universe lol. I am near its end, but there's still some reading left to do.

The era of the Ultimate Marvel which I went through is defenitely one of its bleakest, but one of its best at the same time. You had events like Ultimatum, but you also had the Death of Spider-Man storyline shortly after that. You had the terrible Ultimate Avengers trilogy, but you had Hickman's Ultimates afterwards. So, let's jump into the books I've read and my short reviews of them.

203 BACK ISSUES READ
203 BACK ISSUES READ

I will start off with the most important book that I finished in my humble opinion and that is Ultimate Spider-Man or at least the Peter Parker story in the Ultimate Universe.

Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #129-133; Ultimate Spider-Man v2 #15; 150-160
Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #129-133; Ultimate Spider-Man v2 #15; 150-160

Ultimate Spider-Man (combined) - I continued the Ultimate Spider-Man saga and I went through probably the best and worst phase of Ultimate Spider-Man. The end of the first volume, the Ultimatum tie-in, is probably one of the best examples of what a great hero Peter Parker is, the selfless person he has always been and why he will always be responsible for the safety of others. However, straight after Ultimatum, the beginning of the second volume is one of the most bizarre things that has happened to Peter and that says a lot - dating Gwen, living with Johnny Storm and Bobby Drake, working at a fast food chain and many others. These events just seem messy, rushed and not written well. Fortunately for everyone, once the book gets back to its original numbering it becomes great again.

Those final issues, that final arc are probably one of the best Spider-Man comics ever written and every Spidey fan needs to read it. Truly remarkable and a great farewell for our Friendly Neighborhood Ultimate Spider-Man.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #33-60; Ultimatum: Fantastic Four Requiem #1
Ultimate Fantastic Four #33-60; Ultimatum: Fantastic Four Requiem #1

Ultimate Fantastic Four - I literally finished it because I had already started reading it otherwise I wouldn't have done it. The quality of the book really dropped in quality.

Rating - 5/10

Ultimate X-Men #75-100; Ultimatum: X-Men Requiem #1
Ultimate X-Men #75-100; Ultimatum: X-Men Requiem #1

Ultimate X-Men - Very similar to Fantastic Four's case. The quality dropped significantly by the end of the volume, not that the quality was ever that high. Some stories were rather abominable, but there was some bright spots here and there.

Rating - 5.5/10

Ultimate Power #1-9
Ultimate Power #1-9

Ultimate Power - Pointless, rushed and overall ugly... Land's artwork...

Rating - 4/10

Ultimate Human #1-4
Ultimate Human #1-4

Ultimate Human - We could've lived without it, but at least the action and dialogue were good, the premise as well. However, it didn't manage to do much as its villain was weak and forgettable and the ending was rushed.

Rating - 6/10

Ultimates 3 #1-5
Ultimates 3 #1-5

Ultimates 3 - The set-up for the controversial event Ultimatum. A book which in its own right is greatly controversial as well. Incest, terrible dialogue and characterization, sex and dumb characters are just some of the things that happen throughout this short-lived volume.

It all sounds pretty bleak, right? Yeah, but at least Madureira's artwork is incredible.

Rating - 3.5/10

Ultimate Origins #1-5
Ultimate Origins #1-5

Ultimate Origins - A nice mini-series which expands the Ultimate Universe and gives us a bit more of its backstory. Well written, well crafted and beautifully drawn.

Rating - 7.5/10

Ultimate #1-5
Ultimate #1-5

Ultimatum - Probably the most controversial Marvel book...ever! It is unrealistically bad. All of the characters that appear act out of character, the dialogue doesn't fit the faces, characters die all over the place just for the shock value and the climax is literally WTF!

If I could give it a 0 I would, but Finch's artwork is too damn good. It's probably one of his best work.

Rating - 2/10

Ultimate Avengers 1,2 and 3#1-6 (1-18)
Ultimate Avengers 1,2 and 3#1-6 (1-18)

Ultimate Avengers - Millar continues his writing of the Nick Fury led Ultimates, but now Avengers and he continues 'expanding' the mythos of the Ultimate universe. He introduces Red Skull, Ghost Rider and then finally... vampires lol. He manages to drop the quality with each new volume until he hits a literal low wiht the third volume with Blade and the vampires. I can rant for hours, pages and etc. for how bad these books are, but I will try to restrain myself.

DON'T READ IT! It's not worth it.

Rating - 3/10

Ultimate Comics New Ultimates #1-5
Ultimate Comics New Ultimates #1-5

Ultimate Comics New Ultimates - A big upgrade from the last Ultimate writing job of Jeph Loeb. It isn't a masterpiece but at least it's fun, well written, characters act like themselves and the artwork of Frank Cho is great.

Rating - 7/10

Ultimate X #1-5
Ultimate X #1-5

Ultimate X - Fun new beginning for the next X-Men of the universe. It introduces us to a rather diverse team, but at the same it keeps things rather familiar with some characters from the previous volume and a surprise new member - the Hulk!

It's worse than New Ultimates, it's rather corny, but the dialogue and artwork is great.

Ultimate Doomsday - A mini-event which shows us the turn of Reed Richards - from hero to the next big bad of the Ultimate Marvel Universe. The explanation is non-evident, but I hope that Hickman will later explain more. It continues the FF's story and it has some nice interiors from Rafa Sandoval. A fun read for when you have some more free time on your hands.

Ultimate Thor #1-4
Ultimate Thor #1-4

Ultimate Thor - A delve into Thor's history and his roots in the Ultimate U... but it was a bit too late for that.

Rating - 6/10

Ultimate Captain America #1-4; Annual #1
Ultimate Captain America #1-4; Annual #1

Ultimate Captain America - An even edgier Captain America tale which is definitely wow. Millar did a good job of making Ultimate Steve Rogers edgy and arrogant, but Aaron manages to outdo Millar definitely. This doesn't mean that the story is bad, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #1-6
Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #1-6

Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates - An improvement to Millar's previous Ultimate Avengers work. I mainly read it because of its connectedness to Peter Parker's death, but it was rather lackluster as it was brief and Millar got the events wrong.

At least Yu's artwork was great.

Ultimate Fallout #1-6
Ultimate Fallout #1-6

Ultimate Fallout - The epilogue of Peter Parker's death and the prologue for the next chapter of the Ultimate Universe. Also, Miles Morales makes his debut in one of the issues. This mini-series is one of the best from the Ultimate U and definitely worth the read.

Spider-Man: Coming Home (ASM vol. 2 #30-35)
Spider-Man: Coming Home (ASM vol. 2 #30-35)

The Amazing Spider-Man: Coming Home - A truly great story that kicks off JMS' Spidey run. This story introduces us to Morlun, shows us captivating artwork from JRJR and has one of the best characterizations of Spider-Man ever.

A must read.

Astonishing X-Men #1-6
Astonishing X-Men #1-6

Astonishing X-Men: Gifted - The beginning of Whedon's X-Men run from which I definitely expected more. The best thing about this volume is Colossus' return and the dialogue. Otherwise it doesn't offer us anything worthwhile imo.

Rating - 6.5/10

Black Widow vol.6 #1-6
Black Widow vol.6 #1-6

Black Widow: S.H.I.E.L.D's Most Wanted - Action packed, beautifully drawn and well colored. A book which looks and feels like an action movie and one which serves as a somewhat of an inspiration to the Black Widow movie. Chris Samnee shows us that he is one of the best in the business and that he and Waid make a great team.

I, personally, am not a fan of the Black Widow that much but I enjoyed the hell out of this book.

Iron Man vol.4 #1-6
Iron Man vol.4 #1-6

Iron Man: Extremis - The entire Ellis run, the inspiration to the terrible Iron Man 3 movie and one of the biggest status quo changes for Tony Stark. A story which is a must read for any Iron Man fan, for any Marvel fan and for any comic book fan as a whole. It doesn't act as something deep and groundbreaking, but it is a great example of how capable Ellis is of completely changing a character in just six issues and how he can change the feel of a book by writing its script.

That's a wrap boys and girls. Quite a lot of comic books. Some of them I would love to reread, others not so much, but I enjoyed every last bit of each one of them.

Please, do share your opinion on the books if you've read them or what you have read yourself in the comments. Suggest some books which I should read or just write whatever you feel like writing.

What I read in March 2023

To start off April I really want to start a segment which, hopefully, will be a recurring thing from now on each month. Each month I will be making a quick blog post about the books I have read during the month, most importantly – back issues. Stuff that I have just managed to read, re-read or books that I just bought and read them straight away. It will be about books I read both physically and digitally.

What I read - March 2023

108 BACK ISSUES READ
108 BACK ISSUES READ

March was a good month. I mainly focused on the Ultimate Marvel line as I wanted to check on the other titles which aren't Ultimate Spider-Man, but at the same time re-reading the Ultimate Spider-Man book.

Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the books that got me into comic books and of my all-time favorite comic books. Let's see what I think about the rest of the line.

Ultimate Spider-Man #78-127; Annual 1-3
Ultimate Spider-Man #78-127; Annual 1-3

Ultimate Spider-Man: I read a total of 57 issues from the series in March and I gotta say I just remembered why I loved the series as a kid. The Ultimate Spider-Man book is one of the books that got me into comic books and is definitely one of my all time favorite books. Bendis just gets Spidey and along with the great interiors of Bagley and later on Immonen, the books has a strong presence.

The Ultimates 2 #1-13; Annual 1-2
The Ultimates 2 #1-13; Annual 1-2

The Ultimates 2: The second volume of the critically acclaimed series from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch consisted of 15 issues in total. The volume was rather heavy as there was a lot going on. Apart from the many events that took place - there being a traitor amongst the Ultimates, Loki tricking the Ultimates into thinking that Thor is a lunatic, Tony and Black Widow getting engaged in order for Tony to learn that Natasha was the traitor and there being an evil Ultimates team which went against the "good guys"; the volume had a lot of dialogue and more issues than the first volume. It was an enjoyable read and I can say that the second one was far better than the first one. A big negative for me, for both volumes, has always been Hitch's artwork as I have never been a big fan of his, but at least it was dynamic.

Ultimate Gah Lak Tus Trilogy - Ultimate Nightmare #1-5; Ultimate Secret #1-4; Ultimate Extinction #1-5
Ultimate Gah Lak Tus Trilogy - Ultimate Nightmare #1-5; Ultimate Secret #1-4; Ultimate Extinction #1-5

Ultimate Gah Lak Tus Trilogy - The first Ultimate Universe event which consisted of three mini-series was definitely a let down. It started off with a nice suspenseful horror story (Ultimate Nightmare) and managed to end with the most anti-climatic half-ass bs that I have seen. It came off as a surprise to me as each of the 3 mini-series was written by Warren Ellis, who is usually a stellar writer, one of my favorites. However, from what I have read online I've come to understand that he was meant to write the first mini-series only and then hand things over to Mark Millar, but due to some personal affairs he couldn't continue writing this event.

I won't go into too much detail rather than it's not worth your money and doesn't add up in any way to the overall theme and story of the Ultimate Universe. Read at your own expense.

Ultimate Iron Man I and II #1-5; #1-5 (#1-10)
Ultimate Iron Man I and II #1-5; #1-5 (#1-10)

Ultimate Iron Man I and II - Ultimate Iron Man was a great introduction to Ultimate Tony Stark. A twisted tale and a different story to tell his origin to the audience by introducing the billionaire playboy philantropist to the Ultimate Universe as a superhuman from day 1. Ultimate Tony build his armor to block off the painful decease which he had rather than to break himself free from terorists.

The story was decent. It was like an espionage sci-fi thriller, but quickly managed to lose its momentum and suffer the same fate as most Ultimate Marvel books - to start off well, with a nice idea and manage to find a way to become a lackluster boring amalgam book.

Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #1-6
Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #1-6

Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk - This book was... alright, I guess. I didn't expect much and it didn't manage to suprise me in any way. It was neither bad nor good, but it was a fun read. Yu provided great visuals, the action was decent and was some nice eye candy, but the story was below mediocre. Damon Lindelof being one of the writers of the hit TV show LOST should've done a better job, but it seemed like he was out of his comfort zone, in a bad way.

Rating - 5/10

Ultimate Vision #0-5
Ultimate Vision #0-5

Ultimate Vision - A continuation of the Gah Lak Tus trilogy which was supposed to do something, but at the end of the day it did literally nothing. Mike Carey, being a great writer had my hoped up high when I went into this book, but I was left with a pretty big disappointment.

Vision, Falcon and M.O.D.O.K were the big players in this book... Yeah, you read that right. Their interactions were mediocre, the plot was mediocre, the dialogue was mediocre and so was the artwork. A big no no book for me.

What to read next?

Hey guys! So this may not be the most interesting thread ever but I've gotta ask. So I'm at a big crossroad here and I cannot decide what exactly I should read next. I am doing rereads of the appearances of my favorite characters and right now I am at Spider-Man but I have the urge to read some of the work of my favorite writers as well, such as: Morrison, Aaron, Remender, Ellis and etc. but most of the things that I want to read from them are their runs on big Marvel/DC characters. I am really confused right now because if I read their runs then that means that I will be reading those characters' appearances that are somewhere around the middle of their history and I really want to know what has happened before that.

So my main question is, which one of these books I should read next:

  • The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Jason Aaron's Wolverine run
  • Scalped
  • Jason Aaron's PunisherMAX
  • Flex Mentallo
  • Grant Morrison's Animal Man
  • Transmetropolitan
  • Planetary
  • Remender's Venom
  • Fear Agent

Need some advice

Hey, guys! So, what I am about to ask you about is something that has been on my mind for quite some time. It's sending a pitch to a comic book publisher. Yes,yes, I know that's something that I am probably too young to do but I have to try... I want to try. All my life I've wanted to become a comic book writer and now finally, I have the guts to do it.

What I want to ask you about is if you guys think that I should risk it and try it out and send a pitch, and if you think that I should which publisher should be my first choice? I have a few ideas that I will work on and one of those shall be sent. All of them are pretty action-packed but with a big horror, thriller vibe with them. One of them is more phylosophical but the other two have a straight forward script that's not hard to understand.

So I'm ready to see your thoughts and to see what you guys think.

Filth - TDK's Review

No Caption Provided

Well, this movie's name explains the movie perfectly. Now some of you may not even know that this movie exists but you will now and in the end of this review you will want to watch it really badly. This is not your typical crime movie or your typical comedy movie, or even your typical drama. It's something really strange but in the same time amazingly interesting and well done. The movie is based on a novel by Irvine Welsh with the exact same name and now that I've watched the movie twice in two days, I really want to buy the book and read it.

The movie has, I guess only one star actor in the face of James McAvoy, everybody else that takes part of this project isn't that well known in my eyes. But for my pleasure and everyone else's pleasure, those actors are just amazing with their play and perfect for their roles. I had a lot of great laughs with them and even a couple of really terrifyingly sad moments. I am a big fan of McAvoy and I was excited to see him play in this movie and GODDAMIT - he was awesome. The guy's performance in this movie was not ust perfect but godlike. He played a pervert, alocoholic, drug addict cop who wants to get a promotion but in the end everything turns out badly for him - he becomes even a bigged drug addict, he starts to have anger issues, becomes a schizophrenic and develops a bipolar disorder. Things aren't looking good for the character and the same can be told for McAvoy.

The movie starts out as a really f**ked up comedy with a really big amount of adult humor which is just hilarious. You can laugh from your heart and have a great time even if you are with friends. But with time you may start asking yourself where the movie is going because it seems like it;s just going around in circles so you can have a fun time with Detective Bruce but at some point things take a hard turn for him. We transition from a really fun comedy to a really, really touching and sad drama. That transition isn't rushed or pushed by the directors but it seems even natural and we just get to the serious part of the movie.

I really can't say more than that because I will be spoiling a lot for you guys. All I have left to say is that this movie will might even make you cry and you will think about a lot of stuff. Right now I am going through a hard time and it seems like the movie has the right vibe and plot that suits my current condition and emotions. It seems like I might turn out like this guy if I don't change a few things and maybe that touched me the way it did but this movie is making a great impression me and with the great play of McAvoy this is easily one of my all-time favorites. It is really sad that this movie doesn't get the recognition it deserves and it is probably that way because it is a European movie and that kind of movies never gets enough respect and love.

My only gripe with this movie is that it ended too quickly. I wanted it to be longer because I really wanted to see more from the character because I fell in love with him and hist story. I really want to know if there will be a second part because there is a sequel to the book.

Overall, the movie is a great mix of a fun and non-engaging flick and a really rough and hard drama that will rock your world in many ways. The cast is perfect and in the end of this movie you will love James McAvoy even more than before. He doesn't make any mistakes in the movie and the way he plays a damaged cop who seeks love from his ex-wife is perfect. I really want to know what you guys think about the movie if you've watched it and if you haven't ..... just watch it!
