Mutation
Synergy was born with an insectoid mutation. Many aspects of her biology are similar to those of insects, most visibly her six arms and compound eyes.
**Compound Eyes**
Her eyes are made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny ommatidia. Each ommatidia is made from a lens, a transparent crystalline cone, light sensitive cells arranged in a radial pattern and pigment cells. These function as a phased array. Thanks to the large number of ommatidia her vision has a resolution human-type eyes, no matter how sharp, cannot match. The mosaic nature of the image makes them incredibly sensitive to motion as well, aiding Synergy in detecting incoming attacks because she can see small, fast moving objects such as bullets the same way a fly detects and avoids incoming danger. In addition the light sensitive sells are much more sensitive to light than human cells and are also sensitive to a broader range of frequencies. This allows Synergy near perfect night vision as well as allowing her to see into the ultraviolet spectrum.
Overview:
- Four times magnification
- Twice the maximum resolution of the human eye
- Highly sensitive to motion, capable of detecting small, fast moving objects such as bullets
- Lacks the blind spot and de-focusing weakness of the human eye; entire field of vision is in focus at all times
- Can see clearly in low light conditions, granting near perfect night vision
- Visual range extends into the ultraviolet spectrum, can see things that are invisible to humans
**Insectoid Skeletal Muscle**
Like most insects her muscular fibers more closely resemble those of the human heart than any other type. In addition they are undifferentiated; where a human has three different types of muscle Synergy only has one. Known as asynchronous muscle it is a type of muscle fiber that contracts more than one time per nerve impulse. Constructed from myofibrils and resilin they have considerably more contractile force than humans, one of the features that allows insects to lift up to twenty times their own weight. In addition resilin is a type of tendon that stores one hundred times more kinetic energy than muscle, leaving human muscles in the dust in regards to explosive movement. Where as humans have multiple types of skeletal muscle architecture Synergy has only one: longitudinal architecture. In longitudinal architecture fusiform fibers run parallel to the axis of force generation. This means the entire muscle functions as a single muscle fiber, maximizing muscular shortening speed thus maximizing explosiveness and acceleration. Insectoid muscular contractions are strictly aerobic; it is simply impossible for a biological system to perform at this level without oxygen as fuel. Although Synergy has a heart and a vascular system it is impossible for it to supply her muscles with enough fuel. A secondary vascular system runs through her muscles; each contraction of muscle squeezes blood engorged veins, compressing the fluid and driving it through the muscle in sequential hydraulic compression. Because every muscular contraction moves blood through her muscles, fueling them, rapid or extreme exertion cannot fatigue her muscles. Each muscle is home to a ganglion, which is a cluster of somata and dendritic nervous tissue. These store 'procedural memory', meaning the brain can send a realitively simple signal 'do X' which the ganglion then interprets as a complex motor movement 'doing R, T, Z, L and B' from a single swift command. This means enormously complex movements are extraordinarily simple to Synergy because her brain does not need to control hundreds of muscle fibers at the same time. It sends several simple commands to various muscles and they turn those simple commands into complex and synchronized motion automatically. This gives her tremendous precision and vast, inhuman elegance in motion as well as the ability to perform maneuvers too complex for any human.
Overview:
- Specialized insectoid muscle tissue make her extremely strong
- Asynchronous muscle fiber and resilin tendons give her tremendous quickness and explosiveness, as her muscles rapidly contract multiple times with every nerve signal and her tendons can store ten times the energy of a muscle fiber. This also allows her to leap many times her body length
- Longitudinal architecture reduces muscular shortening speed and pull on-axis, maximizing acceleration and force.
- Each contraction moves blood and nutrients through the muscle, meaning her muscles cannot fatigue from exertion
- Ganglion clusters in every muscle give her extreme precision and allow her to perform maneuvers vastly more complex than any human with ease
**FRICTION PADS**
Many types of insect can walk up vertical surfaces, sticking to polished steel and glass and even walk upside down across the ceiling. This is due to pads covered in microscopic hairs. Short, flexible and thick they are not adhesive or 'sticky' in the conventional sense. Instead they harness the power of friction. When they press up against something they create several of orders of magnitude more surface area than any comparable object. This creates a tremendous amount of friction, holding the insect in place until a mental command retracts the hair and allowing the insect to remove its limb. Synergy has microscopic pads covered in these tiny hairs running across the insides of her fingers, her palms, the soles of her feet and the underside of her toes. So small they are invisible to the naked eye they remain retracted until a mental command deploys them. Because the inside of her hands and feet are far larger than an insects foot and the 'flex' of flesh allows more pad to make contact with an object she generates several multiples of the amount of friction an insect generates, allowing herself to simply lock her hands or feet onto an object, creating a next to unbreakable bond.
Overview:
- Microscopic pads covered with short hairs generate many orders of magnitude more friction than any other known object
- They cover the insides of her hands and the bottoms of her feet. She can use these to climb walls, walk across the ceiling and much, much more
- Because the amount of friction generated is so much greater than any other known source and she does not depend on an adhesive she can stick to anything aside from frictionless fluids
**BABEL GLANDS**
Like many venomous insects Synergy has several glands located under her skin that produce neurotoxin. In Synergy these glands are host to a bacterium known as Clostridium Botulimun. These glands must be under the skin and isolated from blood flow because even trace amounts of oxygen is lethal to the bacteria. Clostridium Botulimun produces a neurotoxin known as botulinum toxin. It is the most lethal toxin known to man, including synthetic toxins and chemical weapons. When it enters the body it degrades the SNAP-25 protein, a protein required for the docking and fusing of of neurotransmitters. In essence no part of the body can communicate with any other. From simple cellular reactions to the transmission of nerve impulses through the somatic system, everything ends. This causes complete and utter paralysis, the failure of every organ and the failure of every bodily process. Synergy has nicknamed this 'Babel toxin' for it destroys the greatest of systems by preventing communication. She can secrete it from glands located under her skin at will. Due to her insect physiology her neurotransmitters are radically different, giving her immunity to her own poison.
Overview:
- A neurotoxin that degrades all neurotransmitter, causing instant paralysis and organ failure
- It is the most lethal toxin known to man, including synthetic toxins and chemical weapons
- By smearing it on her blades Synergy can deliver the toxin deep into her foes body, causing near certain death
- Superhuman durability is of no use because the toxin does not rely on the resilience or lack thereof of the target; instead it simply targets a single vital protein, stopping neurotransmitters from functioning
